I’m an automotive technician and for 99% of screw driving tasks I prefer the following. Softish rubber over mold, tri lobe or similar, ratcheting, magnetic bit, I have good luck with Milwaukee and Makita. For no magnetic bits, the Dewalt magnetic sleeve is awesome. As for Philips bits I’ve found nothing and I mean nothing beats the Ryobi diamond grit bits in terms of shear bitting and resistance to slipping/camout. Awesome bits and vastly overlooked and underrated. They are kinda soft though so they may not last as long as others but they’re so slip/camout resistant that I don’t care. I tend to stick with snap on but that’s more out of convenience than anything else.

The old school craftsmen screwdrivers are nice, the handles are great for throwing a wrench on when you need the extra leverage. I prefered that over the style with the small hex on the shaft.

Husky screwdrivers from Home Depot can be really good, I got mine in 1998 and have served me well ever since. But I also have a DeWALT 4 in 1 I like using too. A magnetic tip and integrated bolstering is always a plus. 👍

Growing up I just used whatever was in my dad's toolbox and I got that when he passed right around my 21st b-day. I only recently started upgrading my tools and I had previously been well stocked on screwdrivers but started looking around. I found the Quinn brand had a lot to offer - magnetic tips (needs stronger magnets), square shaft, comfortable grips and you can get them on sale - I got 20 screwdriver kit for under $20 when it was on sale!! Amazing deal and they come with a lifetime warranty. Sure it's only sold at Harbor Freight and people often make fun of HF - BUT they've come a long way and these are amazing. Break it, take it into any shop and they'll crack open a kit and give you a brand new one!! I love that.

I've used Klein screwdrivers well over 30 years and it has stood up to the use and abuse, I recently got into the Vessel brand to give them a try, one of the most important thing to me with screwdrivers is the diameter of the shank especially with the #2 phillips.

I picked up the six piece Milwaukee set (non USA) six years ago and really like them. They've held up well. My son has the Carlyle six piece set (on sale this quarter by the way) from NAPA and I really like those. I bought a select few of the Vessel for JIS stuff on Japanese bikes. Those are nice as well. I like the idea of the mulitbit screwdrivers but find myself not using them. I have an old USA Craftsman one and a Carlyle ratcheting one. I also picked up from Menards some long and stubby select Masterforce made in USA ones. They have the acetate handle with the rubber sleeve (like a Klein) and I like them but only occasionally use them.

As far as handles, even though they are unconventional I’ve gotten into some Wera and Vessel ball grip this year. Wera actually fit in the hand better than you’d think. I have a ratcheting Vessel ball grip and the blade pops out and you also have a stubby. Give them a look.

What no German or Japanese screwdrivers? Of those pictured, the MAC/Proto Duratec screwdrivers are my favorite. I like the hard handle shape and feel, and its ability to resist automotive chemicals. sadly, SBD Mac closed the South Carolina plant making those screwdrivers and now offer a similar design made in France. Bolstered screwdrivers are also important to me. I prefer the round/trilobal handle design. Vessel makes some very comfortable screwdrivers that are great for Japanese phillips screw. Nothing fits a Japanese screw better. Their Impacta series are the bomb for removing brake rotor screws. PB Swiss has very comfortable round handled drivers. The German Brands (but not necessarily made in Germany) Wera, Witte, Wiha with their non slip handles, hex shaped blade, and through tang construction are outstanding. I think everyone should own a pair of Demo Drivers. one Phillips, one Flat just to beat the crap out of stuff. I'm not a fan of the Snap on Instinct handle. It just feels uncomfortable to me. I prefer hex shaped blades for ease of finger spinning. Don't want magnetic tips on a fixed blade screwdriver. if i need magnetic, I'll use a bit holder. Great video, thanks for sharing.

I think my favorites are the hard plastic designs by Snap On, Williams, and Tekton. They feel great in your hand, easy to clean, tough, and made in USA. For beater screwdrivers I really like the old Craftsman acetate handles, I’ve beat on them mercilessly and they generally hold up. One other line I’ve gotten into recently are the Wera chisel drivers. Made to be tough and have a unique hand grip that really works.

I don't get super into the weeds with my screwdrivers, but for affordable daily drivers, I really like the Quinn diamond tip screwdrivers from Harbor Freight. They are cheap, ergonomic, color coded, and pretty well made. The diamond tips really do help prevent stripping out screw heads. They look nearly identical to the first Husky screwdriver shown this video with the blue handle and are likely made in the same factory. I prefer a magnetic tip. Only use multi-bit screwdrivers in minimalist emergency toolkits that I keep in the trunk of my cars.

Having been wrenching for nearly 40 years, I've been through just about every configuration of screwdriver made... that being said, when purchasing I look for larger handles (something my arthritic hands can grasp with some force), a "bolster" or place to put a wrench when I can't seem to get enough grip on the screwdriver. I guess my biggest problem with screwdrivers overall is they wear out... I realize we all use screwdrivers for things they aren't really designed to do, and it wears them more then just using them to turn screws. I've found that I buy a couple sets a year and really haven't settled on a brand because they are seem to wear about the same. I can honestly say the higher priced screwdrivers don't really seem to offer anything the mid range price screwdrivers don't! I've never been into "brands", it's all about "effectiveness" and how well it works for everyday use. If someone came out with a screwdriver that really was head and shoulders above the rest, I can assure you, I'd own a set! 😉

Thanks for this video, I definitely have a problem with too many screwdrivers. Being able to magnetize is nice but not always necessary. Bolsters, generally not needed for my use. Classic Stanley Workmaster, from the 70s and 80s, with the trilobe handle were the best overall, really the most comfortable; hard to beat the trilobe for comfort. However, for some of the best screwdrivers and tips in the modern era, I've been using Wera and Vessel screwdrivers and their ball grip variants as well - truly excellent! Multibit screwdrivers: Klein and Milwaukee, tried the Rollgear but it wasn't for me.

Snap On 4 sided hard handle screwdrivers for the automotive & machinist tool sets. I have been using the Milwaukee for the electrician bag with the multi tip Ideal brand because of the built in nut drivers and wire nut socket. I would prefer the Snap-On for each trade and will be getting them for plumbing, carpentry and the wood shop. For those with soft hands, I recommend handles that are smoother, to avoid blisters. Soft handles are good for extremely cold weather.

Wera single use drivers are nice feeling. I love multi purpose drivers and Klein kills it with multi screwdrivers. The 11-1 ratcheting impact driver is awesome. The Klein 27-1 precision driver is fantastic. And a beater screwdriver like the wera driver with the strike plate on the handle and bolster on the shaft. These 3 drivers with a few more bits of choice and you can throw everything else away. I keep a set of Klein insulated flip bade driver in my multi meter case. As for stubbies, honestly if I need to get to a tight spot I usually reach for a ratchet that has a 1/4” collet to accept a bit.

The sonic screwdriver is just a white labelled witte screwdriver. Same with matco screwdrivers. I really like the new cornwell screwdrivers, I also like snap on's and mayhew's design. I'm kind of obsessed with screw drivers and like goldilocks I never found the perfect pair. The nut fastener on a screw driver, it always seems like a selling point, but I've never met anyone nor have I myself ever used it on a screwdriver. Seems kind of pointless. I like hex shanked screwdrivers for their solid construction, they always seem to be the toughest. Tri-lobe, round, I feel that the "style" of shape doesn't really matter, the only thing that does matter is, is it comfortable in your hand? Everyone hand is different so this is highly subjective. I like cushion grip screwdrivers for basic tasks, but I like hard handle screw drivers for things like mechanic work where they will get covered in oil and grease. I feel that magnetic tips are a must, when would you not want the screwdriver to hold onto the screw? For heavy duty screwdrivers, hex shank, with a striking cap. For mechanics screwdrivers, hard handle, or soft grip but they'll be harder to clean. For daily tasks, like things an electrician would do, or a maintenace engineer. Comfort grip are the best. The most important thing about a screwdriver, is the head, and how well does it bite into a #2 phillips. Too many screwdrivers easily cam out, and to me, that's the most important factor. Thicker grips do seem to be better for comfort, because your handle muscles strain less when gripping. For precision screwdrivers, I like the german brands like wiha and wera, they just seem to make the best precision screw drivers. Also for precision screwdrivers, I like a dedicated set, not a bit set. Often times you need the narrow shaft and having a bit adapter gets in the way. The electric screw drivers seem to strip out small screws far too much and just aren't worth the hassle, except for maybe on removal. I personally hate ratcheting screwdrivers, as I feel they don't offer any real advantage. You'll be turning the screwdriver handle either way, and it's not like the handle gets in the way like on a ratchet. These are my two cents, as little as they are worth. Thanks for the video.
