Video was good. BTech is one year after diploma. Just clarifying. People might think it's 7 years to get one. Also BSc, Beng and BTech does not mean you will do different work. Or you'll get more dirty and hands on. They do the same thing. From my experience the difference is with registration. BTech also means the science Being applied. Beng a d BSc would be more or less the same. BSc and Beng have more theoretical maths and science BTech more applied maths and science. BTech falling away and Being replaced by a three year Bengtech which will become a small bit closer to Beng but not the same. The difference of BTech and Bengtech is there is no more practical exposure like in-service. Fully academic and more math and science intensive than previous BTech. Your video was well done. My advice would be to do BSc as it's recognised by Washington accord and BTech is Sydney accord. BTech have a slower salary start than BSc. When I say BSc I also mean Beng. After a period in the workforce the experience matter more. In civil field BSc graduate will be working in consulting where BTech will be working for contractors. This role is not limited and you will find either in both and vice versa roles.

Hey Sis zanele there's a new engineering qualification now called Bachelor of engineering technology in sa and Btech it's gone. So let's say i did Bachelor of engineering technology in industrial engineering at NMU or UJ. Can i do B eng Honours in industrial eng at wits uct or up?

@@truthhaven2909 hey. Uhm at the moment they say you can do honours but it refers to the Engineering technology program. To do honours for the BSc instead of B Eng tech, you can probably still go to UP with a two year program that they have there which was previously for BTech. UCT are more strict with the transition. The requirements are the same at UJ and other universities for BEng Tech and BSc so why not just do the path you would like in the first place as a first year than waste time wanting to transfer. Both will be very hard as a person from grade 12

I've been working for about 8 years in south africa post grad with a Btech. I've never NOT been able to do any of the work done by BSc or Beng graduates. Same work, same designs and planning, same level of project management. In my experience i think my Btech has helped me just as much as a Bsc or Beng would have. If you look at ECSA's civil engineering code of practice, once you are registered, whether it's PREng or PRTechEng, you can sign of on the same work. The important factor becomes your experience which in turn determines the level of risk you can take responsibility for with your accreditation. The most important thing I've learned since ive started working with my BTech is that Experience is king. After you register (I have PRTechEng) the only thing that limits you is your experience and level of skill. Not a qualification you obtained 8 years ago. Trust me, your experience will supersede that. I've worked for professionals (PRTechEng) on projects worth in the hundreds of millions that they were responsible for and not having a BEng or BSc was definitely in no way limiting them. Focus on building the right experience. Trust me, after 10 years of building and gaining the right expertise no one's gonna care which institution you graduated from if you have an excellent track record.

NDip and BTech is good for people that want to be real engineers, people that don't mind working with their hands. BEng is not geared for those practical kind of people but is more for those that prefer theory and a little bit of practical. The highest paying jobs in general are for BEng graduates but this also depends a lot on your experiance. I am working in a team that has people with both BEng and BTech and there is no difference in duties or salaries

I just want to clarify a few things regarding B Tech. I am currently in my final semester. I am doing my B Tech in Chemical Engineering and the theory is like 95% with a little bit of pracs. We are currently designing absorption/scrubber columns, distillation columns, designing reactors and designing process plants from scratch. All of the design work requires extensive theoretical knowledge. We have also done one of the main modules in ChemEng such Process control, heat and mass transfer and fluid flow in dept. What i am trying to say is B Tech is a lot of theory especially now with the new syllabus. I am currently also doing Part time tutoring and some of my students are from Stellenbosch university (BEng students) and i see about an overall difference of about 10%, not so huge according to my estimation. So Please dont think theory will be neglected on a Btech level, you will be emerged with theory.

Having been expiriencing the same reality, more recognition is given to someone that can actually learn and apply skills than someone who just comes with theory and no practical expirience. I feel like the BTech route for those who want to be more practical is the best way to bridge the gap between the old manual way of doing things and the new science.

Majority of Southern Africa employers and Universities (Stellies/UCT esp.) consider BTech to be way lower than BSc. Most require and employ BSc grads only. The conception that you are a “Technologist” and not an “Engineer” with BTech is highly still attached to this thought. I have over 10years experience and work abroad as my BTech is compared to MIT/IIT internationally. ECSA has to lead the way in changing there assertions to accredit BTech students as “Engineers” i.e your Pr registration says “PR Engineer (Tech)” and not “technologist”. If you reside in Southern Africa and would like to be known as an engineer, don’t waste your time with BTech. If you’d like to be a technologists and always work under an engineer with blue collars then go ahead. I am completing my BSc in ADU atm, then re-registering professionally as an engineer.

BEng is the comander in chief as it covers both BSc n Btech sylubus at a time. Lot of people drop out of BEng to do BSc or BTech. There absolutely no way one can become an "Engineer" with a Btech degree in SA, and there are some major differences academically between the Btech and the Bsc(Eng)/BEng as laid out by ECSA. Incorrectly termed by referring to a Btech candidate as a hands-on/technical "Engineer". Btech--->Technologists and BSc(Eng)/BEng---->Engineer.

Thanks Earnest. It's great that we have individuals with diverse experience wanting to help others gain knowledge! Absolutely there are differences as shared...Note that I speak of the differences from an ECSA perspective in one of my videos. The reference to engineer is relative. It is incorrect to say there is "no way one can become an engineer with a Btech". Some organizations job requirements for facility Engineer are BEng/BSc/Btech and now with GCC.

There is a way to become an engineer with a btech actually, I have a btech and an NQF 8 PM qualification, I am registering for an MEng NQF 9. alternatively one with a btech as it is NQF 7 can register NQF 8 honours (Eng) to gain the title "Engineer"
@earnestkornaar1001
@earnestkornaar1001 3 жыл бұрын
@@nomkhosincanana7348 I beg to differ, as per ECSA's registration categories you'll fall under the following 4 options based on which diploma/degree you completed; "Candidate Engineer" (BSc/BEng), "Candidate Engineering Technologist" (BTech/BEngTech Honours), "Candidate Certificate Engineer" (GCC), "Candidate Engineering Technician" (National Diploma/National Higher Diploma/BEngTech), and if you satisfy further requirements in terms experience and your portfolio, then you can apply for the "Professional" title to replace the "Candidate" prefix. I myself was on the technical route (Diploma/Btech) but recently just change to an Academic degree (BSc in Engineering) after learning that BTech doesn't lead to the "Professional Engineer" status, even if you study up to MEng or PhD, you will still be a Technologists regardless, unless if you do the GCC where you can earn the "Professional 'Cerfified' Engineer" title. And to my knowledge, there is no University that offers a stand-alone NQF 8 Engineering honours degree to BTech students, there is only a standalone BEngTech Honours (leading to Candidate Engineering Technologist). To date it is only the University of Pretoria that offers a stand-alone BEng Honours in Engineering, but all their Engineering Honours streams (Mining, Electronics, Electrical,Chemical, Mechanical, Mechatronics) require a BSc or a BEng and NOT BTech/BEngTech, EXCEPT CIVIL Engineering, Civil is the only program at UP that accepts candidates with BTech into their Honours program. But as someone already mentioned in the comments, it is true that with time your degree won't matter that much anymore but your experience, but one drawback is that your BTech will forever limit you in terms of leading/signing off Engineering projects. it's only Professional Engineers that are certified to sign-off major engineering projects as per Engineering laws of SA/ecsa, that is one fine print that they will never tell you on your BTech or Diploma admission application at the Universities of Technology.
@nomkhosincanana7348

@@earnestkornaar1001 I get you thanks for the clarity, I thought an MEng can earn one the tittle. UP on the other hand had said an NQF 7 qualification is eligible for admission to honours I guess they did not specify further. Within my years of work experience in the private sector they categorise everyone the same BSC/BEng/Btech we all become plant engineers/principal engineers, Im currently in the public sector most of our senior engineers who signs off big projects are Btech holders with Government certificates. I guess it varies from organisation to organisation or it could probably be more applicable internationally, but to a certain extent you are correct.

The fact is engineering is a passion, no varsity in the world can make you an engineer if one is not passionate about the field, most people have degrees in engineering but are not engineers in reality, furthermore, one becomes a real engineer after many years of real engineering experience. In South Africa many graduates end up working as project engineers more than technical engineers because the country is not a producer but a consumer, meaning there is no design and innovation industry but maintenance of foreign designed and built products. all degrees offered in s.a give the student all the necessary engineering fundamentals needed, the subjects or core topics, say in mechanical engineering are exactly the same in btech,b.eng/bsc ( i did btech and bsc 4th year), the books used are also the same, depending on the varsity you go to. Pay etc depends on your skills and experience, also political affairs affect this in south africa. So in short, a degree type does not make one a real engineer, Gordon Murray designed the McLaren F1, and recently his new T50 hypercar and has a diploma from DUT.

Learning in institutions teaches general principles and tools, but the real learning comes from application. You may be disappointed to know that in the work place, it's very possible that someone with a master's gets paid the same sometimes less than someone with an honors, based on the role and impact. If there are further insights you are looking to gain from the masters before work, then do so.. I know internationally they do look for postgraduate studies as an advantage.

There is no real difference between the two in the real world. Except for shallow perceptions held by some HR processionals. There is a big difference in the academic world as the BEng course is a lot more difficult in terms of scientific theory. In the BSc, you do 2 years of pure sciences such as physics, chem, applied math, pure math. This more rigorous approach is followed on to the theory of the engineering subjects making them a bit more mathematical in nature

+Randon Naidoo I would imagine the BTech is the best fit if you've got an NDIP. Also BTech is more hands on and practical focussed.. I would imagine you credits lead you this path as well BEng focuses on Eng Sciences.. a bit more theoretically focussed..

@@amochenamani9514 Ecsa has online facilities but I suggest whenever you post, try an have it tracked as well, that way you can check to see where your package is, below is Ecsas postal address. Also if you don't hear from them, do call their offices to follow up. Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) Private Bag X691 BRUMA 2026 The main offices are in Johannesburg, I do know they have reps in large cities such as Durban etc. Have not heard of one in Mafikeng though. @engineer3126
@engineer3126 10 ай бұрын
not equivalent too, they will only start second if you pass maths, physics uct/wits required them to write, went to uct with some BTech/BEng Tech grads from cput n uj. most started at 1st year, reason being BTech n BEng Tech are engineering Technology while Bsc is engineering sciences, first two years in bsc is pure sciences course which are all prerequstie to others BTech/BEng Tech tend to solve maths problems by plugging into already developed formulas while in Bsc we study mathematical proof so that they will be able to develop solve all the problem from1st principles, is not about which one is better is just different. BEng Tech/BTech use surface mathematics to solve broardly defined problem while BSc need deep mathematical knowledge and physics to solve complex problems.@@chisangamumba2961
