Thank-you for a very thorough presentation. We got an ICOCA the last time in Japan, but our next trip is to Kumamoto; so, we plan to pick up the Kumamon no IC Card there. Very helpful tip about being mindful of transit zones even within the same JR area. Lingustic trivia: Sugoca is the northern Kyushu variant of the Japanese word sugoi (amazing, wonderful). So, you'll often hear umaka (umai: delicious), yoka (yoi: good) in that area.

Kumamoto City Tram will stop accepting as well by March 2026. Payment methods will now be cash, the local Kumamon no IC Card, & credit card touch. They cite the cost of the transit IC card system as the main reason.

Thanks for the tip. My family bought Named Suica cards from Ueno station machine right after Japan reopened in 2022, and it only expires 10 years after your last rail or bus trip in Japan. Another advantage of Named Suica cards is the value is transferable to another Named card. Good to know we can use it in the Kansai + Nagoya regions. It's a bummer that the JR Pass is so expensive now so we may just pay for our Shinkansen rides without a Regional pass since our upcoming Nagoya - Kyoto - Osaka is spread over 14 days.

@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 25 күн бұрын
Hi, great question! In some places there are clear signs but in most there will not be any signs. Therefore, if you have traveled a long distance ( more than across town ) consider tapping out of the gate first if you need to make a train change. Don't worry if you don't as the gates won't let you pass if you did! There will be an attendant window at either the left or right sides of the exit gates, just see them.

@@kuri9573 That is kind of the point of having the Card registered to your name/address/phone number so that if you do lose the card, it is possible to get a refund of the balance even if you never located the lost card. As for carrying the Japanese IC card(s) with you at all times, I think it makes more sense to just keep the Japanese IC card(s) with your passport. Hi, a lot of travelers have had issues trying to charge their IC cards through Apple Wallet. Have you tried a different payment card? If you have the Apple Card that seems to be the most reliable one that always works for us. Otherwise, like you said, you can try again once in Japan. Some travelers have said this worked for them. You do not need the Pasmo app or any other IC card app in order to charge your IC card. You only need to use the Apple Wallet as described in the video.

Hi, if you are asking about getting an IC card it will be hard to get one in Yokohama and even in Tokyo. You might have to purchase individual paper tickets to ride the trains and buses. Once you stop in places like Shizuoka, Nagoya or anywhere farther south you will be able to get one of the IC cards mentioned in the video based on region. Ticket offices or vending machines at JR Stations might be the easiest place.

Hi, a digital IC card will work fine. We gave all the examples since digital IC is only available for iPhone users. But also, any of the 10 IC cards including all the tourist versions will work across the country including in Fukuoka. However, if you do go out of the city there is a chance they may not take IC cards. If that is the case, then cash will be required.

Thank you so much for all the information! My friend and I will be returning to Japan next year and were hoping to travel through 11 prefectures while we're there. When mentioning we can't cross different regions, would that include travelling from one prefecture to another? Would it then be recommended to buy seperate (physical) tickets to get from one prefecture to another and only using the IC cards for traveling to cities and sightseeing spots? Basically, how will I know if something is outside a region? ^^;;
@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 19 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching :) Your question is hard to answer but I don't think you need to worry about it. Because, usually when you cross prefectures they are far distances and you will be taking a limited express train or a shinkansen where you need to purchase a separate ticket and therefore, would not be using your IC card at all. An odd one is if you plan to travel from Tokyo to Yokohama/Kamakura. In this case you are crossing from one prefecture to another but it is no problem and you can use your IC card to cross because the entire area is one huge megapolis. I hope this helps.

@KenshoQuest

Yes. However, if you have more than one digital IC card on your phone, you will need to select one under the Express Transit settings, so the automatic gate knows which card to charge. You must use the same card at the start and end of your trip, so the system can track the distance you traveled. I have not tried installing multiple digital cards, but I have heard of other people doing it to take advantage of the current exchange rate. Hi, yes if you have a digital PASMO IC card, you can link it to your Smart EX ticket to ride on the shinkansen. You do not need a Suica. It can be any of the 10 interoperable cards as they all work across Japan. But for the virtual digital cards you can choose between PASMO, Suica or ICOCA. Again it doesn't matter which one you get. We recommend the digital PASMO because in some instances you will need your full IC Card number and the only way you can get that is with the PASMO app which has an English translation unlike Suica.

Hi due to the shortage you probably won't be able to order any and pick up in the U.S. However, you can order a Welcome Suica card but it needs to be picked up at Haneda Airport. Therefore, I don't really see the advantage since you can purchase directly from the machiine. If you have a balance left over on your Welcome Suica or PASMO Passport you can spend the remaining at the airport as many places will accept it. Or at vending machines or many convenience stores. The main advantage to getting these is that they are probably easier to get and you don't need to pay a deposit for it like the regular cards. They are also meant as a souvenir.

Hi, this is a tough question that probably only specific JR companies would know the answer! However, I don't think you need to worry much as most likely if you will be entering a different zone you will need to either change stations or have to exit a ticket gate. In the Shizuoka area you are in JR Central territory where you can get Toica or Manaca. But if you start from Tokyo you can get the Suica or Pasmo ( or their tourist versions ). It doesn't matter which one of these IC cards you get, they will all work in the Shizuoka area.

In order to designate an IC card on SmartEX you need to know the full IC card number. If you have a digital SUICA it doesn't show the entire card number. In order to find out what your digital SUICA card number is, you need to also install the SUICA Finance app. Once you've installed the app: - Open the Suica card in Apple Wallet - Tap on the three dots icon (...) on the top right corner of the phone - Select "Card Details" - Select "Open" in Suica Finance App - In the Suica Finance app, you will see the Suica card that you added -- tap on the card and you will see the full card number. Personally, I found this whole process easier with my digital PASMO. As soon as I installed and opened the PASMO Finance app, it showed my full number right away. Doing such would "block" my SUICA (example) and I need to see some attendant to be able to unlock it before continue to travel and to be able to use the card? Hi, if you plan to take a local train, you will most likely need to change trains when leaving JR East region into JR Central. Are they any fees for adding money to digital IC card?
@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 24 күн бұрын
We don’t incur fees when adding money to our digital PASMO using Apple Card (Mastercard). You may want to check with your credit card issuer and make sure that charging an IC card will not be considered a “cash advance” with associated fees. There is also no fee for charging a digital IC card with cash at a train station charging machine.

I have 6 or 7 physical SUICA cards (large family, multiple visits). BUT if you can get a digital version, I strongly recommend you use digital. It will save you a lot of time trying to top up your card with cash (trust me, will become a pain the more cards you have). 6:35 can’t you just fare adjust? I’ve never had this issue to give you an idea how unusual this is but I guess if you are doing long journeys all the time.

Did you try installing the digital IC cards directly through Apple Wallet? (Not through the App Store) You may need to update the language settings on your phone. In order for some Japanese apps to translate fully to English, the Language setting on your phone should be set to "English" AND the region set to "United States".

@@KenshoQuest You are correct. Googled after leaving the message and then figured it out. Have read though that reloading by Visa in Wallet may not work. Probably just reload at the machine with cash. Thank you.

You're thinking of STSS. While it is indeed life-threatening, it is also extremely rare. Get your information from a trusted medical source, because media outlets generally blow things out of proportion in their quest for ratings.

Do IC cards have an app to track your spending history?

If you have a physical IC card, you can use a train card balance app to check your history: Apple: apps.apple.com/us/app/japan-train-card-balance-check/id1479319615 Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=digital.cardreader&hl=en_US&gl=US
