Is the 2 part collapsible viable for actual combat?, or is it just a training tool?
@Karatemart

That is an excellent question! Similar to a telescoping baton, it is made to withstand impact. But, it has stress points on it's thinner sections that will bend if they are struck too hard. So, if you are practicing your striking, I would definitely use a standard bo staff.

the only question i have, and the doubt i feel is with both the "collapsable" staff and the "2 part collapsable" staffs are if their connections and stess points are dureable enough. now, i do believe that it will hold, but im still a bit sceptical :/

Do the metal Bo staves still allow for comfortable sliding of your hands along it's length during use? I have a home made Jo staff which I made by putting a tight fitting (needed to use a mallet to get it to fit) soft wooden doweling into a copper pipe. The soft wood inside prevents it from getting bend and makes it resilient to dents but the metal surface make the skin on my hands stick if I try to slide them to fast. Slowing down the weapon and causes discomfort (and sometimes rude words). Is this an issue with steel or aluminium too? or is that just copper?
@Karatemart

Great question! I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with that and I’ve spent a lot of time using them myself and never noticed that issue. I have a feeling that it has something to do with copper. Thanks so much for watching and for your question!

I have questions first are the quick connects on the 2 part bo staff gonna kinda take its self apart second will the collapsable bo staff collapse when I stab or thrust and the end will get hit
@Karatemart
@Karatemart 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions! Definitely watch my newest video where I show off the 2-piece in more detail. As far as thrusting goes, they use friction to stay extended. The friction can hold the ends pretty tightly and you do need to use quite a bit of force to collapse them, so they can handle some thrusting, but not with a lot of force. I’d use a standard bo for that.

I'm curious the 2nd model of LED staff. You said it's multi-piece: polycarbonate fitted into aluminum. Being multi-piece, there's a chance they come off, so "less durable" than the one-piece polycarbonate. I'm thinking... how about making that from a SINGLE piece of long polycarbonate, and roll an aluminum skin circumferentially around the staff where you want the aluminum look. The polycarbonate in that zone will need to be machined down to accommodate the aluminum skin thickness, while allowing the surface of the entire staff to feel flush. Where the aluminum edges meet, possibly weld it, and then sand it down. I'm not sure if that welding gets hot enough to ruin the polycarbonate underneath the alu skin. Worthwhile trying. This can be your 3rd generation LED staff. 😀
@Karatemart
@Karatemart 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good suggestion, but aluminum doesn’t weld very nicely. We could possibly use steel, but it would add some weight to it. I’ll put on my thinking cap. We have a couple of new versions coming out soon, but they are similar in how the aluminum is connected to the polycarbonate. I really appreciate the suggestion though. It’s always good to get ideas from people who have a good understanding of engineering…and obviously you do. Thanks so much!
@reallifeengineer7214
@reallifeengineer7214 3 жыл бұрын
@@Karatemart Another method: Use a center-core (solid rod or hollow) that serves as the actual structural piece; maybe 1/2" diameter. Slide alternating sections of cylindrical polycarbonate & aluminum over the core. These are hollow sections with 1/2" ID, and maybe 1" OD. Cap both ends with a right-hand-screw turn-to-tighten end-caps. The tightening torque squeezes all the sections together, forming the overall staff. You might need to have a "rubber seal" on the end caps that helps absorb the shock (when bo staff clash on impact), this way the shock vibration does not work the end cap screws loose.
@Karatemart
@Karatemart 3 жыл бұрын
@@reallifeengineer7214 that’s definitely a possibility. We are actually testing out using a frosted acrylic inside the polycarbonate to create extra glow, so that might work in a similar manner. You definitely have a mind for this stuff. Thanks so much for the suggestions!
@reallifeengineer7214
@reallifeengineer7214 3 жыл бұрын
@@Karatemart Thank you. Just sharing ideas. BTW, when you put polycarbonate ring around an acrylic core, where the light source is first inside the acrylic, and you're trying to guide the light into the polycarbonate layer, You've probably noticed a lot of loss in the transition between the two materials. If you add a clear liquid, the liquid will fill all the surface imperfections, effectively "removing" the boundary as far as light transmission is concerned. So more light will get into the polycarbonate layer. Water would slowly evaporate away. So maybe try oil. Any kind of cooking oil would probably work.

I love privet, but I happen to have it in my yard, and it you don't cut it back, it goes all green nazi on you. Almost want to get some Kudzu and let them fight it out, but nice straight branches, not a lot of knots, sturdy enough that I never broke one. Sorry if this interferes with your sales, but a Bo Staff is seen as a Weapon. Some jurisdictions don't like that. (I live in Texas, so I can walk down the street with a Warhammer. The cops stop me to talk about it, but the consensus is if anybody turns up murdered with a Bec du Corbin, they know who to talk to first. "Good, I'll probably want you to find out who stole it!".) The point is the only difference between a walking stick, and a Bo-staff is people's opinions. The hippy dippy types don't have a problem with you carrying a Walking Stick.

TBPH, my Warhammer is the best deterrent I've ever found. I use it to pry car doors off by the hinges at the local scrapyard. So, it's also theoretically effective, but I never got a chance to find out. You walk around with a rifle over your shoulder, and people might see if you think you're a tough guy. You walk around with a polearm, and they just aren't interested in finding out just how crazy you really are.

Hey brother! How’s your weekend going? Growing up in a small town in Wisconsin, there was only one school to train at, which taught a mix of Tae Kwon Do, Kenpo and Kung Fu with a group of specialized instructors. As soon as I moved to Arizona, I found a Judo school that gave me a huge appreciation for takedowns and grappling. When I left for college, I began training at an MMA school that taught BJJ and Muay Thai and also spent time at another school learning boxing. After college, I joined an Aiki-Jujitsu school that taught me joint manipulations and how to use someone’s strength against them. Because I enjoy working with all sorts of instructors, I have been lucky enough to learn aspects of many other martial arts. I have a huge love for the martial arts and feel like each one can provide something valuable.

Hi Robert, it is common knowledge to martial artists that "bo" means "staff". However, when it comes to KZfaq, and search engine marketing in general, it is important to use the terminology that ranks the highest. KZfaq transcribes the audio from your video as well as any text in the title and description of your video to determine which keywords it is going to rank for. If you do a search on google for "Bo" or "Staff", you will notice that you will get a lot of different suggestions. However, ranking for "Bo Staff" is the best way for martial artists to find exactly what they are looking for. That is why the highest ranking websites and KZfaq videos phrase it as "Bo Staff". I hope that makes sense. Have a great week!
