Over the last three videos I have reviewed what I believe to be the best contenders for the coveted title of "Best Pelagos 39 Homage".
Those are the Seestern S430 Titanium, The San martin SN0121G and the Octopus Kraken OCT010...all very good watches in their own right. I actually own the Seestern and bought the other two also for review so there is no favouritism here!

That’s a hell of a detailed and honest comparison. Most of my Aliexpress Brand watches are San Martins and Seesterns (hopefully they get you that replacement clasp very soon - I’ve dealt with their customer service, and they were always very professional and quick with me). Now I’m going to have to give Octopus a look. Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Well done, John! Most entertaining. You were quite generous in forgiving the mistakes - IMO, the clasp on the Seestern and the misaligned bezel on the SM should have been a “3” at best. 😊 I don’t own any of these brands, but I agree that the Seestern would be my preferred choice. I stopped liking San Martin since they started using the new branding (very subjective) and “Octopus” just seems odd to me. I agree with your observation that the uniform appearance of the Seestern works best. Enjoy the well-deserved hols, John!

Well done! Your scoring system is to be commended, very thorough, impartial and concise. I've had my Octopus for about a month and love it.... it has displaced every watch in my collection since the day it arrived. I also own the San Martin (in blue), it's also a great watch, and I've had none of the bezel issues yours has. Interestingly enough, My Octo's lume is definitely longer lasting than the San Martin, so that was interesting to me. Any one of these watches is a fine choice, but, for me, the lightness and comfort of the Octo, along with the excellent bracelet that mimics the Pelagos' perfectly, has me feeling pretty good about it. Thanks again on a job VERY well done, John!😁

For such a long watch review video, I really *really* enjoyed watching that. The best part was the watch you own is the one with the lowest score (!), which makes me wonder: what weighted value do we put on, for example, how much we like the dial, or bezel insert, or "feel", or some other bias? Maybe a topic for another day, and certainly a very personal measure. Great video, great review format, which I hope to see again.

For me, the Octopus gets the nod. For me, the deciding factor was the bracelet. I like the thicker links of the Octopus over the other 2. All the watches are great. Good review.

Great great revue, John. Thank you for your excelent work. All the watches are very very good for the price. Big time watches for the Chinese micro brands. I love all. Unbeatable value. Obviously i prefer always hi beat movments, date, and karisma watches. This is not the case of course, we talk about homages. But the quality it's here. Warm regards.

The Octopus is very tempting but I just love the look of the San Martin so I ordered the no date black version on Watchdives once it got restocked, since I've already had many good interactions with the San Martin folk and their watches! It's just perfect to me as I love the look of the 42mm Pelagos, especially because it is matte and so subdued, but not it's dimensions. Exact opposite for the Peli 39, can not get over the concentric brushing, especially on the bezel insert... Enjoy your holiday, John! Much love from Germany from a very recent subscriber

I have been waiting for this 3-way review and it was worth the wait! Such a detailed and considered review John, really, really good! For me, the Octopus name is just not a name I can live with on a dial, if they had a no name dial, maybe. If San Martin matched the lume on the Seestern that’s the one I would buy but then again the black one is sold out at the Watchdives store…AGAIN! Lol.

Hi John despite the mis-aligned bezel I like the San Martin as I prefer the blue version of the Pelagos as opposed to the Black one. Also it does look more like the 42mm Pelagos which I prefer to the 39mm version. The red text on the dial on the 39mm is just an eyesore for me.

I am happy "my" watch won! :D However the elephant in the room should have a weight penalty for not being titanium. And therefor Seestern should have second place. San Martin is in full steel, and finishing is much easier. Loved every second of the review, very well executed. Great job!

The Tudor is my grail but I won't buy one as my lifestyle wouldn't justify it. I pretty much destroy watches and would have to constantly baby it....this is why I love homages and come down on their side :)

Great comparison! I just got my Seestern in the mail today from the Ali Express sale. I have to say I'm very impressed with it. The finishing is excellent, the crown is nice and smooth to operate, bezel action is great, and the alignment is perfect. Aside from the clasp I have no real complaints about it so far, and it has exceeded my expectations. I might have gotten lucky, but this one seems to be a keeper.

I personally think all three watches are great options. I have to admit that I prefer the San Martín over the octopus just because I’ve read that the pt5000 movement although very accurate also has winding problems and some over-time issues, plus I just love the way San Martín uses the 42mm Pelagos design on a 39mm which fits more confortable on the wrist.

Thanks for watching and commenting. That is why I like doing these videos, everyone has a different opinion. My watch can last haha! The stories about the pt5000 are older stories. A well oiled and regulated PT5000 is an excellent choice, they do feel different when winding, much as a Miyota 9 series feels different. :)

Interesting comparison.I have the San Martin and I really like it overall. I don't mind the stainless construction at all, nor do I mind the finer crown and bezel edges. Great finishing overall. Nice piece of glass on top. Great bracelet and one of the best clasps in my collection regardless of price and I love the overall look. My bezel is aligned perfectly and I feel it has less blackplay than yours does. I don't notice as much difference between the colors of the dial vs the bezel vs the chapter ring but I do wish the paint on the pinion was a bit closer of a match. Definitely not a deal-breaker but I feel that is the #1 hindrance... assuming one doesn't mind the stainless construction. Overall, I'd rate it 8.5/10 which is about where your figures tallied up.

Had I had your watch the result may have been different...but then again if my watch shipped with the correct clasp then I would have been a lot happier also. Excellent stuff! I enjoyed it!! First off: when a store offers bad customer service, call them out mate!! The San Martin actually isn't a Pelagos 39 homage, it's more a homage of the "regular" Pelagos that happens to be 39 mm in diameter. Now as for the result: what is going on here! I can't but agree with you! 🤣🤣🤣 I like the Octopus Kraken best and I was rooting for it! Perhaps I'm a little bit biased as I've experienced a San Martin with some QC issues lately and on the other hand an Octopus Kraken that's just perfect and that I love!! By the way Octopus Kraken and Baltany are essentially the same company.

Hard choice, I have just received the Black Seestern today. First impressions are good, the watch head really captures the Tudor look and feel with good fine brushing and a very nice case. The bezel insert is very impressive and it lines up . Crown is easy to use not stiff. Overall the head of watch is 9 out of 10. The bracelet is less impressive although not bad but would have benefited it the bracelet was like the Octopus which looks much better. The bracelet is a little loose with gaps and the end links don’t quite match. The clasp is the poorest part , I seem to have received a mk 2 version with one hole which is now in the middle of the side of the side so there is still a gap but not as bad as the original. The bezel seems better and a little tighter than yours. I rate the bracelet as a 7 as brushed well but the clasp is a 5 as there is still a slightly bigger gap than necessary and the lack of adjustment. Overall the Seestern really captures the Tudor look and it would be a killer on Good rubber or leather strap. The Seestern really captures the Pelagos 39 look and when compared to original it is not shown up as the face , hands, AR, lume and bezel are of a high standard.

I have the San Martin in black with date, no qc issues apart from the "sharp" clasp. I like the fact that it is stainless steel and it looks like the full sized Pelagos in the 39mm package.

John: superb comparison - I ordered a blue Octopus Kraken watch during the Summer Sale - I opted for PT5000 movement, but am curious if you think that upgrading to the Swiss made Sellita movement (SW200) might have been worth the extra $120 in cost. Thx!

Hi Chet. When buying from Ali Express. Personally I think the best value for money decision is to opt for the PT5000. Good solid movement that is accurate. I have found Selita movements not worthy of the extra expense. Your mileage may vary. :)

As a long time resident of Switzerland, I am terribly disappointed in your answer...yet...would humbly have to agree with you. I find both the PT5000 and the ST2130 are very good movements in terms of dependability and performance. Sure, the finishing on the SW200 is better...but it hasn't delivered a better amplitude/accuracy, as far as I can determine. For the money, the PT5000 typically delivers incredible value for a 4Hz movement.

I agree with you about San Marin. When my leather strap cracked after 6 months (or so) I contacted them about sourcing a replacement. I got a reply saying "not in stock". Too much promotion and not enough follow through.

I have the blue Octopus. Its lume plots are slightly off at 3 and 9. The bezel when aligned at 12, is a bit off at 3.

I know both San Martin and Seestern are know for coming out with a second and if necessary 3rd version to correct any issues. I am curious - what would you recommend they correct (i.e. Titanium for the San Martin)? And if they do this would it significantly change the ranking?

To be honest I would not recommend anything really. As far as I am concerned they should be able to get it right first time. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the early adopters who now have a watch that has been superseded in a matter of weeks so they will lose money selling their watch to upgrade. Most won't so that will leave dead stock. That dead stock is then sold off cheaply, this driving the price down further. A vicious cycle really. The San Martin is a good watch on its own and many people liike it as it is a mix of the 39 in style but the 42 in materials. The Seestern has already been sorted as a result of both my review and many others raising it. The watches are all closely matched but perform better in different areas. Thanks for the question :)

Very fair. As the SanMartin is really a Watchdives exclusive, SanMartin don’t even sell it, they have their own version of the Pelagos homage, it’s a bit of a funny situation as far as the brand goes. I bought the “WatchMartin” In black though. So no Color inconsistency and my bezel lines up perfectly. I will agree the clasp feels a bit sharp on the underside, which is a bit strange as I have the first watch that SanMartin used this clasp on and this one is fine. Anyhow. Fair judgement and a good review. I love the watch of this version that I bought, I wouldn’t buy any of the others including the actual SanMartin version as it’s just another black dive watch, without any point of difference. I might add, I wouldn’t buy the Pelagos 39 for the same reason.

Very thorough comparison 👍. My only suggestion is that San Martin should have lost a point on finishing, because Stainless is much easier to finish and the watch was supposed to be titanium.

Not being an early acquirer of one of these I will look to see if San Martin comes out with a Titanium version ... that said as they currently are I would lean towards the Octopus Kraken. I do want this in blue dial however.

Nice comparison, but you didn't take the Thorn version into consideration. I have it with PT 5000 mechanics and I can tell you that even if the price is lower the build quality seems to be better. The rotating bezel has no play, making the emblazoned brands shiver and the bracelet has the management of quick-change links. With mechanics, PT 5000 or SW200. Paid €157. Logically it is also made of titanium.

Honestly the Seestern and the octopus are so similar that the only real deciding factor for me is the extra row of text on the bottom of the dial on the Seestern. That dial needs 3 rows of text down there. Not 2.

The Seestern has a sharper case finish and a better set of hands. The octopus has the best bezel action and superb insert...and a bracelet that is better. They are evenly matched in different ways :)

From my experience they are all very good. The subsequent IXDAO titanium watch I received was sub standard but was an abhorration from what other users say. My personal take is that the Thorn is best with the Seestern next but these things are subjective. In your mind you have made up your mind on specs and looks alone so that is more important to you than what I think :)

I got the same SM in blue,i can live with different shades of blue,but with this thing you can peel potatoes. Sharp edges everywhere, but mostly at the clasp and bracelet. How hard was for SM to smooth down a bit 😢

@johnswatchjoint not really, just trying to figure it out how hard would have been for SM QC to finish off the product to an ordinary standard . No other parts were blemished in the process though. This is my 3rd SM and i thought they improved their process, but no.

I really appreciate this video. Me, I don't care about the bracelet, and it boils down to - the Seestern is bulkier, while the Octopus' lume is subpar... Hard choice. Also, I am new to chinese watches and the obnoxious branding is really bothering me. The Thorn has EXPLORATION ROAD, ffs. ??? Seestern seems the way to go...

Pity about the San Martin. I think they tried a tad too hard, trying to do a cross between the 39mm and 44mm Pelagos (the recessed indices).

It is important to remain calm and do not give in. There is a time limit. When the time is up, put in your claim. Once it escalates and there is no proof of delivery you will get your money back either via Ali themselves or as a last resort via PayPal. Your money is just saved in another place at present...not lost ;)

The "look like grail" score is a bit off, as actually the San Martin looks identical to the original Pelagos. Which i also think was its intent; to create a watch which looks identical to the original Pelagos, but in a smaller size. I think that should be taken into consideration as that COULD be the grail for some, and then this watch is the only solution if the original Pelagos is too large

Have had the same problem with seestern. They promised me to send me an extra clasp. Contacted them like 8 times. Each time they said it's on its way. That was a year ago. Even asked them for track and trace which they couldn't provide me. Lying is what they do best.

Of those 3 I own a Seestern watch, San Martin I’ve always felt are overpriced and the octopus seems great for the money. One thing I’ve learned about AliExpress watches, for the most part they all come from the same factory, I even had an individual message me that works there but later deleted his comments from my channel. His comment was they all come off the same line, they just gear up differently for each brand that’s rolling through the line that day or week. If you search through KZfaq and google this subject you’ll see it’s quite a accurate statement. They are way more better build quality than I expected, can’t remember the one guys channel but he has some factory video tours, in the one tour they are actually making invictas when he goes through.

Good review. My only criticism, the clasps on the Seestern and Octopus are completely wrong, yet they didn't get marked down for that. You didn't like the colouring of the San Martin, why didn't you review the black one?

Incorrect... the Seestern lost a few marks for the clasp and customer service as they were unhelpful. Did you actually watch the series of videos as this is just the result!

I also reviewed the blue version because I thought it looked better than black. My choice and it didn't look good close up. We are looking at budget pelag homage here. They are not going to have the bells and whistles... That's the point. Appreciate your opinion but you are isolated here as the other comments confirm...

I feel like you've never seen a pelagos in person. The San Martin's dial is spot on to a real pelagos. The case and lugs are spot on. The finish dang near spot on. The back play on the bezel is garbage but the noise is the closest to the original sound of the tudor as well. The design isn't a pelagos 39 it's a regular pelagos just shrunk which is what everybody complains about with the real tudor. If you're comparing all these to only the p39 then it doesn't belong in the comparison.

The comparison was done because my subscribers requested a comparison of those specific watches. Of course I have handled a REAL Pelagos in person and yes it is a shrunken version of the 42. But thanks for the insults. Always good to know intolerance is alive and well .

To tell me I haven't seen a Pelagos in person was pretty much insulting. I try to stay away from material I am not experienced in...then look to experience it. I do this for fun and help my subscribers out as much as I can. I can't do anymore than that. It is a hobby and I am no professional.

I've seen older two-line ones for well under 3k USD. How much money do you think the average person who regularly watches these videos spends on ultra affordable watches in a year? I could be wrong, but I think it probably adds up quickly. So to answer your question, it's really to make the watch enthusiast watching your video happy.

I understand what you are saying but the personal messages I get are usually thank you messages from people the world over who have no access to the real thing. I would rather show homages than the obvious other route people go down. Personally I have owned a £2500 watch and absolutely regretted it because I did nothing but baby it the whole time. A watch is for telling time for me and I don't have to wear an expensive watch to feel good. I feel better wearing a reliable watch with good looks that is ultimately replaceable. This is the whole point of my channel. This is not an expensive watch channel. This is a channel tuned to more affordable pieces for the gent with a smaller wrist....and it is for fun. I respect your take also so no disrespect and no offence meant or taken :)
