Which is the Safest Motorcycle? | Motorcycle Traction Control | KTM390 Adventure, BMW G 310 GS or Royal Enfield Himalayan
We all enjoy riding motorcycles just because it is the most direct way to meet nature, right from cold breeze to rain water, snow or sunlight apart from watching the fascinating beauty. However, unless experienced, one has a risk of dying 20 times higher than a car driver.
No amount of experience or skill, can beat today’s modern safety systems as human beings are likely to forget, feel lethargic or even may not be in right frame of mind to work as efficiently all the time. When talking of adventure which means unpredictable weather and long rides, there is a great chance of making a mistake. I see many riders complaining about annoying Motorcycle Traction control which comes ON every time you switch off an engine, but today by the time I finish this video, you will think twice before switching OFF Motorcycle Traction control.
When we talk of a rider’s safety there are many things which come into our mind. However, when buying a motorcycle one must certainly look into following 5 most essential elements as they can directly relate to your safety.
1. Seat Height
2. Weight
3. Antilock Braking System or ABS
4. Motorcycle Traction Control and
5. Slipper Clutch
To keep the video short, I will just talk about Motorcycle Traction Control which is the most important rider’s safety aid.
Unfortunately apart from the KTM390 Adventure, both RE Himalayan and BMW G 310 GS are not provided with motorcycle traction control.
Secondly and more importantly KTM 390 Adventure is not fitted with an ordinary MTC but it is a Lean Sensitive MTC which is not seen only on big adventure bikes.
The lean-angle sensitive MTC reacts immediately moment the rear wheel rotation speed becomes disproportionate to the riding situation. And in milliseconds, MTC reduces the engine power to prevent any slippage or skid of the rear wheel. This happens so smoothly that it is hard to notice unless riding in extreme off-road conditions.
To do this MTC uses many sensors to calculate the Lean angle, roll rate, yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration, front wheel speed, rear wheel speed apart from the throttle and gear position. The big adventure bikes like the KTM 1290 use many other sensors to provide different riding modes which again control MTC and the ABS.
While in the air force to get closeup photographs of the aircraft for the most popular Flight Safety Calendar, we used to fly very close. Sometimes even with opened rear ramps of AN-32 aircraft where I could even say good morning and also read the pilot’s facial expressions. Exactly in same fashion and to prove my point, I always film motorcycles while in motion from very close angles. And to shoot some big adventure bikes flying dust I had to switch off traction control to get good low end torque without any intervention. With MTC off motorcycle throttle becomes highly responsive and gives you good surge of power without any break.
Such power is required to maintain your momentum which is the trick to cross slush, sand, dirt or even while climbing a steep hill. Otherwise if MTC is left on, it will still do a good job to cross thickest slush but at its own pace and style.
To see more details about this topic of low end torque and traction, kindly watch another video of mine. The link of same is placed below.
So to film few big adventure bikes, I had mounted 3 cameras including a 360 degree Hero Max. I was also aware that, my mind was slightly diverted more towards capturing some stunning shots. And while negotiating a turn, I came across a rut in which my entry was perfect but exit of the rear wheel was out which caused a bad fall. No doubts, I made my best attempt to control the motorcycle but the action ended may be in just 2 second. I was lucky to have missed a huge rock and landed flat on chest ribs on a soft ground, otherwise that stone could have ruptured my rib cage.
I am 100% confident the if the Motorcycle Traction control was left ON, it would have saved me from that accident as I had made many runs previously on same trail and same rut but always with MTC ON.
So I am sure now one can understand that why KTM engineers decided to activate the MTC, every time the engine was switched off by using the key.
Even when you switch off ABS on KTM 390 Adventure, it will still maintain a partial working on the front wheel just to prevent the wheel locking which is really a good and intelligent part of the design.
Rest of the videos covering other rider’s safety aids will be uploaded soon. If you wish to watch more of such technical videos, kindly subscribe to my channel.

Thank you! I owned one of the first batch of PH made 390 ADV here and never did I turned off my MTC, I do 60/40 Road most of the time and manages to avoid road mishaps during a tight high speed cornerning thanks to MTC intervention. During off roading uphill, with a planned line of ascent, MTC do annoy me but it's expected to happen. I only turn off MTC if I'm doing burn outs 😅😅😅...ride safe! 🇮🇳🇵🇭

Having started riding in the dirt at 6 yrs old in1968. Over my 54 years of riding dirt & street. I have never had a motorcycle with the modern riding aids. I prefer the older bikes like my 2000 Ducati ST2. I am reluctant to get a new motorcycle without the ability to turn off the so called rider aids. It has been proven on motorcycle & car. A good rider/driver can brake in a shorter distance without abs. Yet obviously a rider without many years of experience in all conditions. Will be better off with the riding aids. I have had no problems with going over the edge. In other words braking straight line or in corner to the point of starting to lose traction, but not locking up. Takes practice & a good feel for available traction. I can understand were abs comes in for the best use. Panic braking. When you get that shot of adrenaline because a car or something in the road scares the bejessus out of you. You tend to grab the brakes faster & harder. Causing a lockup. If you are quick enough to back off a bit, or remember to not let the adrenaline & fear take over. A disaster can be avoided. With abs it saves riders in a panic situation. Obviously very beneficial for new riders. I think that all riders should start out riding in the dirt. Learning to slide around, make all the little mistakes, wreck, get dirt rash. Pick out the stones from under the skin etc. Before getting on the road. In most cases learning in the dirt & wrecking. Which is normal in the dirt. As sliding around is unavoidable. One learns to slide both ends of the motorcycle and not wreck. Most wrecks in the dirt do not cause serious injury or death. While wrecking on the street even slower can cause serious injury or death. I am not interested in traction control, wheelie control, rear wheel lift control, launch control, straight line abs, etc. All those things can be controlled by throttle use, clutch use, brake pressure, & body position. Seems all the rider aids are taking away the need for actual riding skill. There again, beneficial for new riders. Specifically those who did not have the opportunity to learn in the dirt before getting on the street. The only rider aid that I am interested in. Is cornering abs. Straight line breaking do not need abs. Locking up the front wheel is not catastrophic, simply reduce pressure, regain traction. Rear tire lockup, the same, reduce brake pressure regain traction. With the braking power of modern motorcycles. In many cases the front brake will lift the rear to the point that it is not advisable to use the rear. As it will not be touching or so light that the slightest brake pressure will lock it up. Which can or does cause the rear end to step out. Getting sideways for an experienced rider may not be problematic. A new rider might might not handle it well. One of the biggest issues I see. Is riders relying upon the rear brake to much. Not using the front brake enough. Friend of mine killed himself locking up his rear brake. Earlier that day, I told him he was relying on the rear brake to much. He was a dirt bike rider and used to sliding the rear around. He had not ridden for a few months and his street riding was reverting to dirt riding. A car changed lanes into him. He was in far right lane, a head of me. He locked his rear tire up. With his movement to the right away from the vehicle. When he corrected back as he was headed towards the curb. His rear end locked up kicked out towards the curb. His momentum kept him sliding into the curb. I immediately thought if he missed the light pole & sign, he would be ok, as it was a dirt field, lose some skin, have to pick out the rocks from under the skin, but alive. Soon as his tires touched the curb. His motorcycle went about 10 feet up in the air, his body went about 15 feet up in the air. To the left crossing up and over the car next to him. His motorcycle flew 2 lanes before hitting the ground then bounced to the third lane. His body landed in front of the car next to him. He landed on the back of his head. Instantly brain dead. Could not get his helmet off the helmet lock. We were a few blocks from the locksmith, which was were we were headed. Doctors said. If he had his helmet on. It would have broken his neck & killed him. The combination of height & forward momentum when he hit. Produced an impact force that the human body simply cannot live through. He was going approximately 35-40 mph. Traveling at approximately 40 mph the locked up rear tire slowed him some prior to hitting the curb. If he had used his front brake instead of his rear brake. He would have maintained steering control. He would have been able to stay between the car & curb. Locking his rear tire up, caused him to slide into the curb. This sort of thing was exactly what I was cautioning him about earlier that day. You can stop in much shorter distance using the front brake. While also being able to steer. Takes time to build confidence using the front brake to it's full capability. Also takes skill to not over use it and lock it up in a panic situation. Have to be very aware of the road condition. Being mindful of available traction. Overconfidence can be just as harmful as under confidence. Finding the right balance is paramount to survival riding on the street. Cornering abs is something that I feel is the one rider aid that is most useful. Simply because when you are leaned over with changing road conditions. May they be road surface change, pot holes, sand, dirt, rocks, oil, water, tar snake, meth addict standing in the lane, other debris. It is certainly problematic achieving best braking while leaned over committed in a curve. Obviously you do not want to lockup the front tire, if you do, low side. If you lock up the rear, it kicks out, high side. Not braking hard enough, possible impact, or not get slow enough to safely steer away & avoid. All the other riders aids are not as necessary in my opinion. Though straightline abs that day probably would have saved my friend that day. Even though he used his rear brake only. In that circumstance, he would not have slid into the curb. Being able to maintain better directional control. He did not need to stop fast. Only stay between the car & curb. Even though he was an experienced dirt & street rider. His going to dirt riding method was catastrophic that day. Most dirt riders use their front brake sparingly. As locking it up in the dirt is much easier than the street. Dirt riders typically locks up the rear tire to slide & slow into a berm shot or flat turn. Steering with the rear tire. While also sometimes using the front brake to slow the front end to get the back end to kick out while cornering. In most cases dirt riders slide the rear tire around either through the use of power or rear brake. While rarely using the front brake. I feel that most of the riders aids are unnecessary. While the cornering abs the most useful. The only thing that bothers me about all the riders aids. Is the inability to turn them off on most motorcycles. We should be able to have the option to use them or not. I will most probably stick with the older bikes like my old ducati. Have my eye on another old ducati & a buell. No rider aids. I have everything I need with my own wrist control, clutch control, brake control, body placement. Though, the rider aids are beneficial and or needed for the new riders. That did not grow up riding in the dirt for many years prior to riding on the street. Every time I go riding. I see a rider that is clearly inexperienced. Bad braking habits, bad brake lever placement, poor lane placement choice. Does not stay prepared for that vehicle that will pull out in front of you. Does not keep 1 or 2 fingers on the front brake and clutch at all times. Takes practice working the throttle and having fingers on the front brake at all times. Becomes second nature after awhile. That saving of second or two, only having a fraction of a second getting on that front brake. Will save your life. Bare minimum in protective gear should be helmet & gloves. I see riders with no gloves all the time. First thing you do when you go down. Does not matter, low side, high side. Is put your hands out to break your fall. Natural reaction, ingrained from falling down as a child. Roads are just like sand paper. Except with much larger grains. Your hands get taken to the bone even from a 20-30 mph fall. Arms, hands, fingers get broken & road rash. Knees, head & back also get damaged almost every time. I wear knee pads/brace every ride. You really need to wear armored jacket or shirt. With at least soft CE 2 protection. I wear a lot of dirt bike protection on the street. Which have both soft CE 2 & hard protection. In hot weather the dirt bike shirts with soft & hard are cooler than a mesh summer jacket with only soft. It has been 111-115 degrees Fahrenheit this summer. I have never seriously injured myself in 54 years of riding. I have been taken out 3 times by vehicles. Seriously injured almost died once. Wear that protective gear. It may be a pita at times, hot, uncomfortable. It will help protect you from serious injury or death. Of course you hit a vehicle, light pole, guard rail, curb, boulder, wall. Anything at speed. You are dead no matter how much protection you are wearing. Where the protective gear really helps. Is the difference in a survivable wreck. It will help save you from serious injury. All the protective gear, all the drivers aids, are of no use. If you do not use that grey matter between your ears. The original & still the best protective rider aid!

When we closely look at the fall, the imbalance to the motorcycle was caused when the front wheel entered a small dip in the surface which is common offroad. With traction control I think you had a higher chance of hitting that rock on the left. Always ride safe, be safe.

That was a good video. However I personally feel it was more about Traction control and glorifying what KTM can do rather to comparing what the rest of two vehicles got to offer. For instance, low end torque in Himalayan comes in handy most sticky situations. Just as a opinion and wanted to share.
@WingstoWheels
@WingstoWheels 3 жыл бұрын
As an Ex IAF officer I don't believe in glorifying any brand but certainly as an Aeronautical engineer, I can't miss to talk about KTM engineers who are the best when it comes to offroading. Royal Enfield even after the launch of Meteor has missed to bring in Traction Control. Even G310GS has no traction control which is today a stand alone system, produced by many companies and could have been installed in latest 310GS. So that leaves just one motorcycle may be across globe which is using Lean Sensitive Traction Control in this segment. Also please don't forget motorcycling means the game which happens on a credit card size small rubber and if it misses the contact, results can be so dangerous. Same is also confirmed in this video. Low end Torque is an old subject and I think many are missing the point. May be following video will clear that doubt of low end torque .... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nKqimbOYns2-cqs.html Lastly, the safety points discussed in this video requires real hard work to explain and justify. However I am working on them and those will come in a matter of few days.
@dinuprof
@dinuprof 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have seen the KTM engineering videos before on how the lean sensitivity is calculated and cornering ABS works. Royal Enfield is a different breed altogether who believes they want to maintain the traditional and modern balance without overdoing it. BMW is new into the ADV segment and considering the cost sensistive India audiences, they didn't want to take a larger step to start with. KTM has been largely dependent on technology rather the vehicle dynamics itself from the beginning and it again becomes the choice of the individual and their experience in handling the situation. I am sure either vehicles scores good in each of the areas and my ask is more in terms not deciding vehicle safety because a vehicle is techologically advanced. Also refer the recent video from Motorbeam: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJaYp6aryMmtcok.html

IMO presence of mind is most important safety feature. Having aquaplaned couple of times on my non abs bs3 Himalayan, I am always cautious on wet tarmac. No matter how much electronic assist is available, if break fluid and break pads are not maintained they won't work properly even if computer does everything right. Also not all of us are aeronautical engineers to understand and fix a fly by wire system if it goes kaput and leave us stranded on a solo trip 😜.

a note; it is not TC could not save the situation its that many small errors combined put you on the ground, you are better than the setup you were riding for the pace, @10.30 min and earlier @7.40 min video showing the rear end rebound is fast and at the rut, you've bottomed the rear shock(since rebound is fast it added to issue) so that (+ sag is off) in turn had bounced you off balance.. front end could not help since your left foot was already off the pegs.. so if you're still doing the same circuit it is nice to set sag and test it, if bottoming persists upgrade rear shock.. upgrade to one that has at least a rebound control. happy riding

Sir I have recently discovered your channel and have become an admirer of your presentation and video style. Pls keep it up. Coming to technology on motorcycle- be it for convinience or safety, people will always be divided. 1 that technology is good for new riders where it helps them to better their skills and saves life in tricky situations. And 2 that more seasoned riders do not need technology interference and keep the motorcycling experience pure and let the skills do all the work, which is fair to some extent. Personally I hate TFT screens which are just a gimmick, MTC and cornering ABS I have done without for last 10 years, however can't ignore the importance of ABS, Fi, ride by wire . So some technology is always welcome but the motorcycle should not be loaded so much with tech that it kills the riding experience and the connection.

I agree. However during a rainy day, I was testing a Tiger 900 Rally Pro and on twisty wet roads, experienced the RAIN MODE which performed beautifully to control rear wheel slides. He HATES the traction control as it is always fighting against what you want offroad, causibg stalls on hills. Then you need to go through whole procedure to turn back off, then stalls again... Vicious cycle of frustration. My G310GS.. Stall, start it & feed the clutch... How it should be. Too many gadgets take away control. If KTM has traction control as option, most riders would not get it.

This is what I understood from the video (my personal observation): you lost the front end of the bike due to the front tyre entering broken patch on the mud road, when the bike started steering left on its own, you went to correct it by turning right to the maximum, which ended up locking the front end of the bike, the front tyres were unable to rotate properly too. But the rear kept moving essentially rendering the move counter productive. My question is, if you had not steered right abruptly and went for stopping the bike (abs helping not to lock the tryres) could you have escaped from being flung out of the seat or could MTC have helped in this case? If so how?

When we are in trouble best is to open throttle. However if the wheel is already inclined, may be due to the slant angle of the rut, it will only slide more. MTC's basic job is to prevent a wheel spin or slide and in KTM 390 adventure which also calculates the lean angle, probably it could have prevented this accident. Even with the front wheel in locked condition, if the rear wheel slide is stopped, bike should autocorrect rather going in a spin. To understand better, try sliding the rear wheel by applying torque with MTC on and see how it will cut the power and may not allow you to reach in this situation.

Hi Good Evening. In India we don't have T700 so I didn't get an opportunity to ride. However whatever I know from reviews and reports, it is a solid adventure bike. It may not have fancy stuff and modern electronics but does it's job well, be it on road or offroad. Plus to me it looks like a real solid dirt bike which is also lighter as compared to ATwin. Best would be to test ride both for a slightly long ride on mixed terrain and once you do that, both Heart and Brain, will point to just one bike. Do let me know, what did you pickup and what attracted between the two. All the best.

@@wheelsontarmac Firstly off roading is all about breaking the traction and controlling and maintaining the momentum, therefore you will never see a dirt bike coming with traction control or almost no electronics at all. And with the growing cult for Adventure bikes they have to perform both highway mile crunching and off road! Now coming to the point the first thing which gives you a strong sense of feedback from the motorcycle is given by the front end of the motorcycle which helps you steer the motorcycle and of you're not saddling and putting more weight on the front tyre it is not making the required amount of traction with the surface! Second he was using his front brakes in off roading who's is a big no no when you're riding that fast on a off road trail , where he should be using his rear brake to the max! Third he couldn't modulate the throttle and kept it twisted more than required to get high sided by the bike which you can see in the video where his rear tire spins violently! So above are the three mistakes he did which made it worse and you can avoid those three to mistakes to be better at riding off road! Traction control and 6 axis IMU on a 44 HP motorcycle is just a gimmick!

While MTC may very well allow a motorcycle to have controlled power delivery to the rear wheel, this video doesn't make a lot of sense and may end up confusing customers. You've chosen to compare 3 motorcycles from completely different price brackets, which also barely make 45HP. Traction control systems are useful on motorcycles that deliver large amounts of power to the rear wheel, and can in turn cause wheel spin. The Royal Enfield Himalayan barely makes 25HP but is a much more capable off-road motorcycle than the 390 Adventure or the G310 GS, simply because it's the only option available among the trio with a 21-inch front wheel that also uses spoked wheels instead of alloys. The 390 Adventure and G310GS are road-biased tourers that can handle fairly bad roads and dirt, as long as that's not your only intent. The Himalayan was designed to go where other motorcycles can't, and its design language and features make that clear. With its engine displacement and power delivery, the only safety net it needs are switchable ABS and finesse with the clutch. While I appreciate the intent of this video, I feel using traction control as the only metric to judge these motorcycles is misleading and unfair.

For majority adventure touring means going to Leh. Also majority can afford a bike upto a budget like Ktm390Adventure. So when wanting to go fast and safe on the most reliable machine, it is only KTM. BMW has nil backup after may be Chandigarh, Himalayan is most unreliable and slowest, so again option is KTM. With Bajaj outlets one still has a chance to get some support but on the other hand now a large number of KTM have already claimed every mountain and returned without any glitch. I did a ride to Leh from Delhi on a Himalayan and returned after 1700 kms. The bike T handle ball bearings were completely broken, side stand spring flew off on way, had to tie with a wire, steering lock was replaced all at my cost at Manali as there way no official backup. Plus saw a broken swing arm of a friend of mine which was replaced in mountains. All this is available on same channel just scroll and see the relevant videos. I not a fan of any machine as a retired Aeronautical engineer of the IAF but a fan of technology which is plenty on this small pocket rocket. 🚀

Also if you wish to understand more about lean sensitive MTC, try riding hard in hills on wet roads. You will understand the difference in 10 minutes of riding. Majority of Motocross bikes are around 40 to 60 Bhp max, be it Honda 250 or 450. So 44 Bhp is a huge power provided it is used and commanded in that manner.

Your fall has not at all any connection to the MTC. First of all you were not saddling that's the main reason that you couldn't control the handle and resulted in a fall. Another thing I noticed that the back wheel slided towards the side, might be you have used the rear brake.
@WingstoWheels
@WingstoWheels 3 жыл бұрын
Motorcycle dynamics is a very complex stuff as so much happens at a single time. Today the latest model of Ducati Panigale are coming with lightweight carbon fiber wheels. These wheels provide better braking and handling performance due to the reduced unsprung weight. That means a heavy rotating mass like the 19 inch front wheel on KTM or Himalayan has it's own inertia and always wants to go straight. On every turn, they have their own effect and if made lighter, rider has a better control. When we go in a rut, apply forces on handle to correct, rear wheel wants to push the bike straight, our body and foot peg are wanting to do something else, countersteering is causing something else, apart from MTC interference if on, that means a lot happens at every second and sometimes it is hard to explain. So anyway we can discuss this further if meet on a common ground as it is quite interesting.
@bineesh7341
@bineesh7341 3 жыл бұрын
@@WingstoWheels It all depends on the rider I said, not on the MTC. Normally while offroading we are the one controlling the rear wheel not the system. We don't use ABS or MTC while off roading, for the slides and wheel spins. I don't think ADV bikes really worried about their weight.
@WingstoWheels

@@bineesh7341 time is changing fast so the technology. Look at RMZ250 motocross details on the website. www.suzukimotorcycle.co.in/product-details/rm-z250#features It reads ........ The RM-Z250’s electronic systems work seamlessly with the rider to get the power to the ground. To maximise traction for conditions, the engine control module (ECM) automatically adjusts ignition timing and fuel injection based on throttle position, engine speed and gear position. We think, we can go faster without MTC on modern motocross machines, probably that is wrong. Look at these video .... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLt8h5ufr93Tdnk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipmcp82G0puqcX0.html On many today's ADVs, you can't fully switch off front ABS and one shouldn't unless going on extreme terrain as system has become that much intelligent. So for any average rider, MTC and ABS are most preferred choice. Just for my information which bike do you ride and on what type of terrain? It is good to explore and discuss as learning can never end.
@bineesh7341
@bineesh7341 3 жыл бұрын
@@WingstoWheels Why so much explanations? I simply said even if you had MTC on in that situation you would have ended up in a fall. Did I ever mentioned about the front ABS? @@bineesh7341 whenever there is an air crash, a proper investigation is made to find the facts so as to save life and expensive assets. Unfortunately in a road accident such things don't take place as we don't value life. What I am trying to bring out is just one simple fact that electronics have started playing a big role. That's why we have things called Rain or Enduro mode which are nothing but some type of MTC. Many switch off ABS and MTC moment we talk of offroading which is wrong in certain conditions. I think you missed to see the first fall of RE Himalayan which happened due to one such error. Please do watch this video if you still think switching off MTC is the right practice. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7mAm5anqa7JZ2Q.html While in the IAF, we went through many aicraft accident Investigations and found that accidents happen because of simple reasons.
