Well Peter even comments at one point that Rocket was going with Thor to avoid Thanos sooooo he probably really was scared to fight him.

The fact that Rocket didn't fight Thanos might be the reason why he was the only Guardian who wasn't snapped away.

Thanos likely faked his death and coaxed Thor to go for the head. He is still alive on the timeline. I suspect he atomized the stones to force the timeheist to happen. Or, rather, made an illusion with the reality stone where his alternate stated the stones were out of reach. A strategy he first tried on the gaurdians on knowhere.

Im still annoyed with Quill for not being able to hold it together for a few more seconds before the Guardians got the gauntlet off, thus dooming half the fucking universe.
