Join John Robert from Holmes Hobbies as we learn about the differences between an outrun and an inrunner motor. This is part 1 of a series.
Are inrunners and outrunner the same?
What makes these motors different?
Is an outrunner really better?
This videos is a 101 beginners course on the main differences in these to motor topologies. John breaks it down nice and easy so even a newb to sport can understand.

Fun video John. I just put the revolver classic 1950kv through it's paces on some hard lines today, it did an amazing job. I'll probably sell it an grab a puller pro it's the last I've yet to try lol. I'm keeping the standard revolver V3 it's a gem!!! Look forward to what y'all come up with next👊🤙🤙🤙

I always ran inrunner motors and my go to motor is your crawlmaster expert 20t as I always had great luck with it and it just works well for me. 1 day I'll try an outrunner,lol. Just curious,what is that black rig behind you? It's on the first shelf rite behind the blue truck. I love the look of it.

Does this answer the age old question of “what motor to run with x or y weight” maybe not, but my burning question is. Did Holmes stumble into a barbershop, misses Holmes had enough of living with a lovable tramp or was there a “incident” with the strimmer while clearing the yard??

2 questions: how many more amps do outrunners pull vs inrunners (I swear I keep puffing up packs on my Revolver I usually use on my inrunners) and are SENSORED outrunners practical in the rc crawler world? Thanks for more videos like this to clarify confusion! I think the crawler community would be somewhere else today if you hadn't decided to get into the motor and electronics industry your products are simply the best!

Outrunners are waterproof. They just don't like dirt or mud...grit can get in there much easier cause its open not closed off like an inrunner.

Still rocking my Crawlmaster pro 13t. I have debated moving to brushless but If I have to give up ANY of the brushed feel I won't be happy. Question: how much more efficient (in regards to runtime) is a puller pro stubby compared to the standard puller pro, given a similar kv?
@mikellewis2346

If u want the best in runner rite now that is about as close to a brushed motor as possible, then grab the 10shooter 2700kv motor with a mamba x....... it really feels like a brushed motor when set up is done rite. The regular pp have little more power output with haven larger magnetics I feel, but the super smooth and slow start up and crawl of the 10shooter is just worth the little loss of power. But will say it's not noticeable unless u run both the pp an 10shooter like I do in the same rig basically.

So in general the HH revolver line will have more torque than the HH in runners? So does that also mean stronger drag break hold with the revolver line?

@jerryvolpini7987

John has done plenty of 'technical' videos for the more experienced guys and, I think it's safe to say, he will continue to do so. While I have been into RC for over 25 years, I'm relatively new to crawlers (2 years) and appreciate this approach 👍 Besides, he said he will be delving more into this in a subsequent video(s) and its good to kick things off like this.

I'm sorry for being a bit dumb but how does the drage brake work with sensorless brushless motors like these? I would really love to use a HH motor for my Phoenix but I don't want a car that starts rolling down the hills, especially if it's still on it's wheels

I would suggest a 35 or 36mm frame size, which will typically have a 4mm or 5mm shaft and require funky pinion. This is part of why I design my own crawler outrunners, so it accepts a normal pinion

@@HolmesHobbies 2435 would be the Surpass Hobby red KK series 4 poles, the D2822 is a DYS/Flash Hobby motor 14 poles, right now I'm using a tiny DYS D2225 2000kv 12 poles motor, it has enough torque but not enough top speed, it's 20% slower than the stock 280 motor, trying to find the best motor to fit in a 280/370 footprint for trail/light crawl uses, unless I ditch idea of using safer 2S 18650 and go with 3S lipo, just not comfortable with my kid handling pouch cells lol

Now for something that isn't in the RC hobby yet: Axial flux motor.
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 5 ай бұрын
It's not a good topology for the motor sizes we use. We need long and small diameter motors, which is radial flux! If we could fit a 4 inch motor it would become more feasible.

@@HolmesHobbies Weeellll... A lot of outrunners, at least the ones used in race drones, are pretty flat comparatively. But that is _literally_ just a single example, so yeah.

@@HolmesHobbies Actually, now that I think about it, you could stack a bunch of axial flux stator+rotor sets to get a "long" motor. At least theoretically? Hmm...
