Btw one important thing to remember about this kind of test is that the air noise through the ports is almost always masked by the total sound of the mid and high cabinets in the rest of the system. Very, very rarely are subwoofers like this in a situation where their particular artifactual noises are on display so clearly, with no other sounds in the environment. In a live sound setting, you have the stage volume, the audience, the rest of the PA system, etc. Both of these subwoofers are much "quieter" than most subs in their same category that are capable of producing similar overall SPL levels.

I doubt it very much, the port noise is ever noticeable in real world use. And wouldn't worry me. ----- Towards the end of the video, you are playing a single cycle at high level, I suspect that ringing is the cone acting like a spring and generating a voltage as the voice coil moves through the magnet gap. Would be interested to see this test done with other speaker amplifier combos. Also would be interested to see a version of this test where there is a constant low level sine wave played with a momentary peak. I am wondering if the amplifier would be more able to control the driver in this scenario.

@Langeloudspeakers

The increased protection at the probable tuning frequency (36Hz) is likely due to the diminished cone excursion thus low heat exchange. Other segments of the frequency spectrum allow a greater cone excursion, enhancing cooling of the voice coil. Low-frequency drivers depend on cone excursion to control temperature for their voice coils. In ported cabinets, the tuning frequency represents the point of maximum system efficiency and minimal cone excursion. Great video indeed, thanks for posting it.

In general, you can put the microphone on the ground when measuring subwoofers like this. On a sheet of plywood as an example. There will be a ground bounce cancelation node in relation to the distance from the mic is to the ground. The mic looks close enough so it may be out of the band pass of the test, but it is hard to say for sure. One other thing to consider. When subs are that close together sub-A may make the woofer in sub-B move in and out and cause the cabinet to resonate at its port tuning. So, some of the "hangover" you were seeing may be coming from the other box putting out sound and the mic hearing it. Measure one sub then move it away or put it face down next time so the 2 don't affect each other when measuring.
@devinlsheets_alphasound
@devinlsheets_alphasound Жыл бұрын
Very very thoughtful response, excellent observations. I didn’t mention this in the video, but I did run these tests to see if those were causing problems and it did not really make any difference that was noticeable. Specifically, I wanted to see if moving the mic to the ground would change the frequency response around 70 and 80 Hz, but it did not. And I did move the other subwoofer about 6 feet away in my preparation for the video to see if that had an effect on things, but it did not seem to. There’s a handful of other things I also tried but didn’t mention, things like different cable thicknesses and lengths, I even tried making my own EQ in logic using different EQ plug-ins that roughly matched the Nexo processing to see if it’s a noticeable difference… Maybe all of this calls for a follow up video!
@devinlsheets_alphasound
@devinlsheets_alphasound Жыл бұрын
Also, for anybody wondering about how the math works out, the wave length of 80 Hz is 14 feet, which means there would need to be at least about a 4 foot discrepancy between the direct sound and the floor bounce sound for there to even begin to be a noticeable difference in the measurement. With the measurement microphone about 3 feet away and elevated by about 1 foot or so, the floor bounce offset is about 1 foot, if that. Given this set up, significant floor bounce problems don’t arise until above about 150 Hz I noticed, which is outside of the operating range of the subwoofer. The reason why I chose to leave the mic in the air was more for visual purposes, given that there didn’t seem to be any acoustic problems.

@@devinlsheets_alphasound One of the reason's, I mention this as I wasn't sure how you were going from sub to the other. Each on an amp channel or plugging/unplugging each speaker at a single amp channel or for that matter if the subs are self-powered. (I've never used these subs so not sure) I've seen lots of people unplug from one unpowered sub and plug into the next one. That is where issues show up more often. If both subs are plugged into a stereo amp the dampening factor and idle current will often hold the cone in place better than it not being controlled at all. If that is not available sometimes a person can short the inputs on a passive speaker and again it will help hold the speaker woofer not being tested in place. I always just move the speaker(s) not being tested out of the way to take any chance of that happening. Take as many variables out as possible. In a speaker's TS specs, one may have a cone with stiff suspension in one manufacture's sub and not in another. Just something to think about. Good response.
@douglasallen534
@douglasallen534 Жыл бұрын
@@devinlsheets_alphasound I couldn't tell how high the mic was above the ground on my phone. That is why I mentioned "The mic looks close enough so it may be out of the band pass of the test, but it is hard to say for sure." Of course, 1/4 wavelength (3.5 feet) would possibly give you boundary cancelation at 80hz. It is just one of those things again to take out of the equation to keep things as accurate as possible. You did a great job with the video. I'll be sure to take a look at your other videos.
@devinlsheets_alphasound
@devinlsheets_alphasound Жыл бұрын
@@douglasallen534 also a super helpful thing to point out! Yes, in this test the subs were always plugged in so the damping factor would at least help keep the drivers stiff, although the air inside of the ports and cabinet itself can resonate and potentially alter the response of the other sub while it is being tested.

The Reason for the sustain in the frequency cycle is due to the eq applied . To make sure that there is no phase shifting , they use linear phase on the eq . Non Linear Phase Eqs change the phase of a frequency wich could cause trouble when setting subs up . Linear Phase Eqs need some delay and pre ringing on order to reproduce the sine wave phase accurately.

The resonance we can see in the impultion test is coming from the fact that the speaker act like a capacitor. Since the membrane can easily be modelised into a spring, the movement continue even with no power. And since a speaker is basically a mic, it feed back the amp with this voltage. That's why inside every amp, there is a boucherot filter at the output. But my theory can be wrong if the graph Signal is before rather than after the amp.

Interesting video. Writing this comment three minutes into the video. These 18" woofer cabinets by Nexo must be for Pro Audio concert type applications due to the drop off below 40hz. When I build subwoofer boxes I prefer to use drivers and cabinet alignments that hit as low as possible. Currently have (3) 4.6cu foot boxes tuned to 21hz with 12" drivers. (2) of the 4.6cu foot boxes have Infinity Reference 12" 1262W. (1) of the 4.6cu foot boxes has an Alpine Type R 12". All (3) boxes are -3db at 19hz. The Alpine puts out a few dbs more across the band then the Infinity References. The Infinities were only $60 when I bought them like 9 years ago. The Alpine type R was almost $300 and has triple the power handling. I have a Crown XLS2000 with a Rolls Pro Match MB15B off the LFE out from our Costco Denon receiver driving (1) Infinity 12" and (1) Alpine type R in our main home theater. Upstairs I have (1) Infinity 12" on a Crown XLS1002 with a Rolls Pro Match MB15B off a Sony DH790. Regardless, vides like this are fun to watch. I am curious by that spl curve though. It appears to roll off well above any home theater sub application. I am guessing this must be a Pro audio woofer setup.

L18 for the win. Clearly an upgrade. When you got 8-12 pcs of each in an outdoor scenario, the difference will be pretty big in the favour of L18. We tried putting felt and other fluffy stuff inside of the S118 port and it actually reduced the air noise quite a bit! It’s not exactly a “rugged” solution though, would get dirty over time and collect dust and other junk, and then might actually make strange noises because of that! And then also, difficult to clean, whereas hard smooth plastic or wood is much easier to clean. The L18 has relatively little air noise compared to many other subs we’ve used through the years because of how large the ports are, they’re almost like horns rather than ports.

The compression/pumping at 30 hz (17:38 in the video) is likely because you play a tone below the tuning frequency, the cone excusion will naturally be higher here as the pressure inside en enclosure on the lower tuned chamber, escapes through the port. My guess is that this protection does not kick in as much during normal music due to all the energy above tuning frequency using most of the amplifiers power's output, leaving less watt for output far below tuning like 30hz. The reason volume reduction don't kick in at 50hz+ is probably because the subwoofer driver is slightly oversized for the ports output potential, so cone excusion is not an issue above lower chamber tuning. For the L18, the distortion might be greater due to a higher tuning of the lower chamber? A few hz higher tuning is all it takes. Thank you for this informative video. It is nice to take a look "under the hood" of some high end subwoofers. Do you have any thought on what the upper chamber is tuned to on these designs?

The differences between electrical an acoustical response simply comes from the fact that the loudspeaker itself is a bandpass = combination of highpass and lowpass (filter), so it adds its own phase and frequency responses to the electrical response of the amp signal! This is all about filter theory, does not matter whether the filters are of electrical or acoustical/mechanical source, they simply sum up…

Nice comparison. It seems the old one struggles with less real sensitivity at 36Hz, with amp pushing like +7dB into an impedance minimum. That is a log of heat in the excursion minimum. Not that I do better, but that's why I like the speaker cone do the job with large displacement 21" even in small volume tuned lower, so the port only serves as ventilation and cone movement protection, while riding the impedance peak. Gonna stick to that.

Having a many-way system is cool for low intermodulation distortion, but it require significant integration work to make it all play together nicely. The cone driver would be the Eminence LA6CBMR or similar, which can be loaded on a horn for louder midrange and more authority in the lower mids, but you lose some top end if you're crossing it high, whereas using it as a direct radiator, there is some actual tweeter range treble - at least as good as a boom box speaker, and certainly enough highs for bass guitar.

I stay with it, i dont like bandpass, dispay on one-tone-infra-subs. Every bandpass horn sounds more precisely and the both boxtypes are not that far away from echt other.
