Which Noise Reduction Tool Cleans Up Noisy Podcasts The Best?

Last year I did a shootout of the four primary de-noise plugins, well, technically, RX isn't a plugin to see how they compared. I also decided to run the audio through Adobe Enhance Speech since it's all the rage right now. This video is a blind test to get your opinions. I will reveal which clip was processed by which plugin in a future video.

To my ears, Clip 2 is the cleanest most consistently de-noised. Clip 5 has a crisper vocal sound which leads me to think maybe it is the Adobe processed one as there seems to be other processing (EQ of some sort) -- although I've never used Audition or their plugin. The other clips all had artifacts like gating between vocal phrases (clip 1). Several were doing a decent job of removing the fan noise but it poked back through once it changed pitch leading me to believe the plugins somehow "learned" the original sound to denoise and didn't adjust when the background adjusted (or the noise entered the same frequencies of the vocals). Clip 5, although crisp, had this issue. Clip 4, horribly artifacty and gate-y.

Clip 2. Clip 5 clearly fails to remove the noise when it changes pitch. Note that in clip 2, I can still hear the noise embedded in a word here and there but it's clean between words.

Thanks for listening and commenting. Something like this takes a brute force effort to clean up. As of today, there isn't a noise reduction tool that can clean up something like this without some artifacts, whether that's gating, some noise still being left in, or general degradation. I feel clip 2 does the best job of removing most of the noise and producing something listenable.

@@jesse.mccune My first digital recorder was a Roland VS-840 with a ZIP 100Mb disk drive. On mic'd inputs, the drive could be heard reading and writing in the background. There were no noise reduction programs back then that were effective at removing that continual 'gronking' noise - that were affordable, anyway ...

Clip 5 is the best imo. While for is the worst as I can still hear some artifacts.

Agree with Clip 5. Seems like a bit more compression and gain in there. Side-note, would love to see these in a Notetracks project so we can solo/compare one on top of another. Feel free to send us the clips to create the project!
