The Omega Speedmaster is certainly deserving of being called an icon. I won't bore you with its historical provenance, nor the space-dwelling efforts of the Professional - I'm sure you've heard it all. The Omega Speedmaster '57 is what today is all about. While it still incorporates lots of vintage-inspired touches, the Speedmaster '57 takes a more colourful approach to a classic. With notable case refinements and incremental tech upgrades, the Speedy '57 is looking to share the limelight of the iconic chronograph.
Let's start with the obvious, then - colour. A topic that many brands shied away from in the not too recent past now graces dials worldwide, and this Speedy is no different. Should you deviate from the beaten path of the black-dialled Speedmaster, you'll be met with red, blue and green alternatives. The red, while quite striking in press shots, exudes an air of subtlety in person, as its rough surface texturing reflects no light. The slightly desaturated blue and green options contrast this with a brushed sunburst effect, adding extra texture via circularly grained sub-dials.
While the new Speedmaster '57 retains the dual-register layout of the 2013 model, there are many small tweaks and upgrades apart from the colourful rendition. The hands are among the more obvious, Omega opting to swap the alpha style out for a broad arrow for the main handset, and vice versa for the hour and minute totaliser. Recessed black rings encircle both the main dial and sub-dials, giving the colours more of a pop.
The monolithic indices are all applied, including the double dots on either side of the 12 o'clock marker, just above the highly polished and applied Omega logo. The dial is kept balanced by a trapezoidal date window at 6 o'clock. In hopes of giving some of those signature vintage distortions, Omega is using a boxed sapphire crystal to cover the dial.
By using a manually wound calibre, Omega has managed to slim down the Speedmaster '57, though not by immensely significant margin. While their press material notes it to be 12.99mm in height, our callipers suggest that measurement to be closer to 13.4mm. For reference, this is a smidge thinner than the 13.6mm height of a Hesilte-equipped Moonwatch. The case is also reduced in diameter, now measuring in at 40.5mm and a relatively long 49.6mm lug-to-lug. This makes it perfectly suitable for average and large wrists, whereas those with wrists smaller than 6.5in may find it a little overbearing.
Dimensions aside, the case finish is lovely, and differs from the recognisable shape of the Moonwatch in a few areas. The most obvious are the strut-like lugs, which take the place of the lyre lugs of the Professional. Keeping with the case profile, the pushers and crown are unguarded, making for a symmetrical case profile, and one reminiscent of the CK2915, the very first Speedmaster. The bezel is particularly of note, as it has also been slimmed down from the 2013 Speedy '57, with fine tachymeter engravings. They're so fine, in fact, that the inky printing completely disappears under certain angles.
As for strap options, you're spoilt for choice. Most will certainly opt for the scrumptious flat link bracelet, a decision that I'm fully on-board with. Should you wish for a more casual option, each dial colour is offered with a matching leather strap, complete with Omega pin buckle. While leather straps are normally associated with dressing up, their vibrant colours suggest the Speedy takes itself less seriously when paired with one.
Taking over from its automatic predecessors is the Omega Calibre 9906. It's a METAS-certified movement employing Omega's Daniels-derived co-axial escapement, powered by two series-mounted barrels and resistant to 15,000 Gauss. The chronograph aspect is composed of a column wheel and vertical clutch. Most notably, it's manually wound, giving the wearer 60 hours of power reserve. The calibre is a familiar face, however, as it is based on the automatic 9300-series movements found in previous Speedmasters, though it's worth pointing out that those did not carry METAS certification.
In regards to the decoration, we see a thick bevel to the three-quarter plate surrounding the balance wheel, transitioning into arabesque Geneva striping. The screws, barrels and balance wheel are all black-polished, combined with a rhodium-plated traversing balance bridge. It's in line with modern Omega decoration, though I can't help but wish we had a better look at what's hidden underneath the large three-quarter plate.
Omega Speedmaster '57 is priced at A$13,200 on the steel flat-link bracelet in blue, green and red, or A$12,725 on a colour-matched leather strap in blue, green and red.

Seriously considering this. The dial is amazing and symmetrical, the bracelet is so clean and well finished, good proportions lug to lug and height wise. Want the blue dial but I've changed my mind a couple times just watching the video.

Recently bought the blue colorway on strap, the bracelet was within the deal and is coming at a later date from an AD I have used often. Nice to have both, strap is comfortable, watch feels light and fits well on my 7.5 inch wrist. It was a toss up between blue and burgundy and had the option for both, in the end went with blue, I think it will be less dated in the future, I tend to keep my watches. Nice quick overview. Paid US$83,000 tax and shipping inclusive, the AD included the bracelet in lieu of any discount, and a repeat customer. Manual winding doesn't bother me, keeps the watch slimmer. Don't have a time grapher nor the need for one but seems to keep with my computer time over the past week.

I gave this some wrist time at the weekend - it seems they are pushing the black dial out first to whet the appetite and get the expressions of interest going for the blue and co. I did think that the shiny bezel did overpower the aesthetic look a tad. You get a halo effect against the light which is good and bad in equal part. The micro adjust is just 2mm which is very tiny, you push in and the hook engages with one of two pins. This should have been one of three to give better adjustment. But hey it’s got some give at least. The movement looks nice and the rear crystal doesn’t protrude as it has no rotor to go over. Winding was a bit of a pain with a smallish crown and seemed to hurt my fingers a little bit. The transition from case to bracelet is a little angular and unrefined. The jury is out about the centre link brushing which seems to be reverse of Rolex just for the hell of it. Those links are very thin and almost flimsy. Watch nerds should put this up against the 44mm Racing model to really see how that has rounded end links for a smooth bracelet transition and way thicker links and a much bigger on the fly adjustment. I only saw the black dial which didn’t do it for me. Will check out the blue which seems in demand due to the Clooney ads. The chrono pushers were very crisp and the hands reset to zero very accurately so all good there. No quick set date so you have to tediously advance the hour hand - this seems to have jet setters in mind. Overall a very nicely put together watch but I feel it was s little disappointing in the metal, didn’t get the fizz. Did however enjoy the Racing model but I’m a tall guy and that seemed more at home on my frame.

You could say that white, black, blue and green are already typical colours for a watch dial nowadays, but I swear it's rather uncommon (rare even) to get watches with red dials. 13.4mm thickness for a manual watch is a shame. And it's too shiny for my taste, but hey - it's all subjective! If Omega manage thin watches again some day, that would be great. Until that happens, I'm all about the Bond era Seamasters and vintage gold dress watches. Slim, elegant and timeless

I am still trying to figure out why Omega chose to make a new manual wound movement and not use the 3861 here? It would have been perfect to have this amazing design and be able to see the 3861 behind the sapphire case back.
@vinceslapchopper
@vinceslapchopper Жыл бұрын
Different design languages and purposes. The Moonwatch is all about incremental changes while staying as close to the original as possible, like what Rolex does with their models. This Speedmaster 57 is more about roughly using the original Speedmaster, pre-Moonwatch reference while pushing the enveloppe on movement technology, wearability and modern chronograph display. All the brands are doing that bicompax chronograph look: Omega, Tudor, Breitling, Hamilton, etc. This watch is definitely not for the purists and doesn't have to be when there is the Moonwatch in the catalog to fulfill that purpose.
@sfomann
@sfomann Жыл бұрын
@@vinceslapchopper ok thanks for the explanation. Agreed that for purists there is moonwatch. But I still would have liked to see a movement like the 3861 where everything is visible. I am not a movement designer or expert but why did omega need to cover this movement with the metal disc considering that this was a manual wound. Perhaps they want people to buy both?
@vinceslapchopper
@vinceslapchopper Жыл бұрын
@@sfomann Good question, I am not an Omega trained watchmaker so I don't really have an answer for you. I know the movement is a different architecture than the 3861 because it fulfills different functions on top of the chronograph complication (date, column wheel actuated chronograph with jumping hour function), so maybe the 3/4 main plate is necessary to provide more robustness to the movement. Also, the manual wind feature with the date doesn't bother me at all, especially since it helps with the case thickness. It's kind of the essence of the Speedmaster to be winded everyday anyway and the crown is not screw-down so you are not going to damage gaskets and compromise water resistance. The biggest hurdle for me, as well as with the new 38mm Aqua Terras released this year, is to choose the dial configuration, they all look so good in their own right!
@sfomann
@sfomann Жыл бұрын
@@vinceslapchopper Oh I did not know that the crown is not screw-down. Good to know. Yes I keep changing my mind about which color option to get and that is why I have not ordered it yet! The colors in the flesh are bit more muted than what appears in the videos. e.g. the blue is more of grey with the blue hint. I have not yet seen the burgundy one yet.

I thought the same and thought no date would be better, but the date at 6 doesn't take much away and easy enough for me to read with my 65 year old eyes. As someone mentioned before, this is a modern watch, I guess the date in this case is expected. Speedy Pro's are date free, and an option. Still you do have a point, have this watch in blue and would have bought it with or without date.

Two facts why in the end I didn't pull the trigger after seeing the watch in the metal: 1) Legibility of the tachymetre scaling on the bezel is extremely poor. 2) The see through caseback. This is not haute horologie guys. Put a steel case back on this thing and make it obe milimeter thinner. Compared to Rolex, Omega always misses to deliver on the last 1-5 percent. Sad.

And Rolex always misses to deliver watches to their consumers, which is a hell of a lot more than the last 1-5 percent as far as I'm concerned. Even more sad.
