Based on my own experience, both are solid cars, but the Accord is known to cause transmission problems after very high mileage. The Camry is bullet proof. The accord has a very nice and large wind screen view and the drive feels sporty. Camry drive is exceptionally smooth and confident, but not exciting.

The accord has around 130,000 miles and already has a remanufactured transmission. I am a big fan of the Camry, but really they are both pretty solid cars.

Your correct on the information about the Honda Accord (Acura TL) transmission problems. One of the reasons is because you would have to remove and then split the transmission casing to change the trans filter on the Honda. Most people just drained and refilled them. Whereas the Toyota Camry transmission fluid and filter change was easy to complete.

I owned a 1999 Accord while my wife had a 1999 Camry, both looked like the cars in this video. Not a huge difference between the two. Since both had beige, cloth interiors, I would sometimes forget which one I was driving at the moment and actually had to glance at the logo on the steering wheel to remind myself. I think the biggest difference is the suspension. The Camry's was softer over bumps while the Accord's was more stiff. Also, I thought the Accord's engine was a little more peppy, making it more fun to drive. My opinion was the Camry is a family car that's geared more towards soccer moms as owners while the Accord is a family car geared towards guys who somewhat still long for a sports car/sedan.

I was 16 y.o. and had been reading about the brand new Honda Accord front wheel drive with CVCC engine. I literally FORCED my mom to buy it. It was amazing to drive, being sucked around corners like that. Everyone everywhere asked her about it. My mom felt like a celeb. There were so few FWD cars out there, she had become an ambassador for it. Anyway, long story short, that car made everyone on both sides on my family buy one, and we have a BIG family. Not to mention all their friends who saw their's and bought one. I'm the only person in my family who has never owned a Honda car and I'm the only one who currently owns a Toyota out of like 40 family members. Just weird!

Thank you for this video. I owned the 2001 Accord from 2005 to 2008 while in college. Definitely had fun blasting through the windy roads. I chose the 4 cyl. 5 speed because even back then, the automatic transmission problems were a known issue already. Multiple friends with the automatic went through several replacements. I miss that car and it's the only one I regret selling. That being said, I recently picked up a 2001 Camry 4 cyl and currently doing some maintenance before I consider her road worthy. Definitely does not handle as nice IMO. However, given the age of both cars and typical high mileage, they are likely deemed beater cars by many. Another personal opinion, most people do NOT maintain or wrench on their cars. People usually just don't sell a car for no reason. Add in multiple owners and how each one took care or neglected it. A bad transmission and replacement can exceed the cost of what you paid for it. Something most first car buyers won't want to deal with. Therefore, as much as I miss my old Accord, the Camry was the safer bet. Cheers!

Some of those xv20 camry's have gray interiors too depending on the market. There's also some faux wood on the camry's, power seats, power sunroof, 4 wheel disc brakes were an option and side airbags. The camry engine's are bulletproof with great transmissions, something that can't be said for the honda autos. I think canadian variants have DRLs, unsure about auto headlights and rain sensing wipers but some have retrofitted it. The Accord has a little more stiff suspension with some more wood in the rear while the camry can have more wood up front. Feels a lot more sprighty, but I think they rate less than the camry for crash testing? I'd also say the camry is a lot more insulated and smoother in both NVMH and ride. I guess that's basically all the options you can get for mid size japanese 90's gen cars.

I bought a 1999 Honda Accord LX with a 5 speed manual transmission brand new in Feb 1999. My folks bought a 2001 Toyota Camry LE brand new in Aug 2001. On the Accord, the suspension is stiff and rides rough, particularly the rear. The seats have limited padding and cause fatigue after 3 hours behind the wheel, even at age 19. The interior noise is considerably higher than the Camry. The 4 cyl in the Accord is much peppier and returns better fuel mileage. Interesting fact about the rear suspension. The spring rate is actually softer than the Camry, it's the valving of the struts that makes it ride so damn harsh. I still have the car but I don't take it on trips longer than 2 hours anymore. Wished I had bought the Camry instead but It has been incredibly reliable, just regular scheduled maintenance. The Camry has nice, soft comfortable seats. The suspension is super soft (particularly the rear suspension). The interior/road noise is much quieter than the Accord. The handling is surprisingly just a hair below the Accord even with the softer suspension. No long journey fatigue, could drive the Camry for 7 hours with no problems. The automatic transmissions in the Camry are far better than the Accord (especially the V6 in this generation) and shifts smoother but the ones in the 4 cyl Accord can last a long time of the fluid is changed every 20-30K miles and driven modestly. My folks have over 300,000 miles on the Camry with only a gas cap (worn o-ring gasket) and driver side window regulator replaced. Both of these were replaced in the very high 200,000 miles range. The Accord is geared for sportier driving, the Camry is geared towards everything else. Both are great choices when picked for their desired characteristics.

Electrically, no problems after I replaced the alternator (though that was an ordeal on account of the limited space in the engine bay.) Coolant tank has been replaced, rims resealed and new tires to replace dry-rotted ones. Currently a check engine, but it's EGR and small evap leak, so I'm not super worried. Yeah it is kinda funny but It does kinda make sense as it is front wheel drive
@kevinftw1611 ай бұрын
90s Hondas would rust out from the rear caused by mud flaps holding water. They probably came with the accord but somebody who knew better probably removed them. My 1992 Honda Accord wagon had all four mudflaps

The other thing with the accord that really dominated the experience was the super stiff suspension. It rode like crap (made worse on my car with slightly lower profile aftermarket wheels) . Did handle well though.
@therealcarlmarti7 ай бұрын
stock Accords do not have very stiff suspension, perhaps yours was modified.
@jamesmack32667 ай бұрын
Now that you mention it, it actually was. It had eibach springs, but they were the ones that were supposed to be the same stiffness as the stock springs. It had new stock struts and shocks. It was way too stiff for me, as the roads around here are terrible. suspension stiffness is a subjective thing.

I believe the Camry number one because they had less problems transmission are more solid on the Camry and it didn't have any overheating problems but the Honda accord is a good car to gotta take care of them more
@tunedskillszАй бұрын
I had both those year models. The accord is more sporty and reliable. The camry is super soft, everything from suspension to the way it accelerates is soft. My camry went through 3 transmissions though.

2001 Nissan Maxima is also a good option. They have a solid VQ30 and transmission that are known to last up to 300K miles. I've had 1999 Infiniti I30 and 2001 Infiniti i30! (rebadged maxima) Both of which have respectfully reached 301K miles and the other 281K miles

This gen Camry is built like a tank. The oil leaking maybe a issue at higher miles (easy fix) The Camry can do 700k. There's a video of it on KZfaq.

Everything that can leak oil, will. Except for the head gasket. The gaskets are old and brittle. I maintain a 2000 Camy 4 cylinder.

This coming from a Honda head I’ve had 99 gsr 97 civic 98 accord 2007 tsx lol I’ve owned a 97 Toyota Camry v6 bought it for 500$ with 86k miles on it from and elderly person and was the best car I’ve had out of the list of Hondas. Never gave me a problem and they drive like they float on air. Def camry all day in terms of reliability and comfort and maintenance.
@jnr19897 ай бұрын
They may be the most reliable but there are the subaru legacy b4 or gt (turbo) and jdm galant v6 twin turbo loaded with all the goodies for a mid size sedan, boy those were the king, just for the record the accord euro R was around too, the accord's hot version for sure... about camry I think maybe in australia they had some better variants

This video is so coincidental to me because my Grandmother literally owns both of these cars currently. She has 2000 Toyota Camry LE (same facelifted model as the one in the video) and a 2002 Honda Accord SE. Both cars are the 4 cylinder models. From driving both. The Camry is smoother but slower to respond. The Accord rides a little rougher but has more power. However, the Accord's transmission is not strong at all. My Grandmother drives the Camry more because she said that car feels more luxurious like a Lexus than the Accord. And plus the Camry gives her a Peace of Mind.

Camry hands down more comfortable and more space I had a friend in college who had that accord and that transmission was doing some weird stuff. And for me the tiny things matter like the Camry has more wiper positions then the accord makes a big difference when it’s raining

My wife owned a 99 accord and now owns a 2000 camry. The same as these two, differences are being accord had the v6 and the camry has the 4. Accord transmission failure was the reason for the camry now being her current car. V6 is faster by far, especially with vtec. That being said Toyota is far and above more reliable and has smoother driving experience. Toyota is almost 24 years old and is still drives smooth at highway speeds.

@blacksongoku31210 ай бұрын
If it's b/n the 2 V6 versions, the camry is probably the better choice. The Accord 6's were know for bad transmissions. The 4 cyls it probably is only down to the maintenance of the previous owner. The honda might have the worst tranny either way tho. Camrys & Accords run deep in my family. Tho all the Accords were/are sticks mine included

one more thing to note is that Honda has an interference engine and the Toyota has a non interference engine. So you have to make sure the timing belt is in good condition and find out when they replaced it the last time on the Honda. Because if the belt snaps, the engine is doomed. For the Toyota, it won't cause any damage to the engine if the belt snaps. You just tow it to the mechanic to get the belt replaced.

I believe the original idea from Japan was to make the honda for younger people 18 to 30 years old, and to make the Toyota's for older people, 31 and up, both nice, but the Toyota is more comfortable ride
@jeffbrosch31422 ай бұрын
One difference between the two is the Camry is way cheaper when it comes to insurance. I have owned both cars. Both will still last longer than any cars or suv's that GM is making. My neighbor just paid off the Chevy Trax they have. Motor just blew up at a little over 100K. Now they are buying a new one. If they got a Toyota they wouldn't have this problem.
@CENSOREDFORSPEAKINGTRUTHS43807 ай бұрын
The other huge difference between the engines is the 1mz-fe can handle a supercharger as they came from the factory with a TRD supercharger but if you put a supercharger on the Honda it would blow up in no time. The 1mz-fe has forged crank and rods standard and that’s why they last so long and are bullet proof.
