Wait! Before we get into this, remember, you only need a module if you drone ISN’T currently remote ID compliant. Where do you check? uasdoc.faa.gov/listDocs and filter by RID. This will tell you if you drone is complaint with RID. If it is listed here, you don’t need one of these modules unless you have other older drones. All of the modules we’re about to discuss are FAA approved at this time.
For recreational operators… You only need ONE module. This will work for all of your recreationally registered drones. You can swap in between flights to ensure both your Mavic Pro and your foam park flyer are compliant.
For Part 107, You need a module for EVERY drone that isn’t currently compliant… Each module will need to be registered to the aircraft’s registration number in the FAA DroneZone.
Alright, let’s get to it starting with approved stand along broadcast modules. These have internal batteries, can be turned on and off via a button or switch, and would be most useful to those who don’t want to wire anything up, or have an older DJI or Autel drone. We’ll be looking at how long the module runs for, how much it weighs, the overall size of the module, the range and the cost. For our tests, no settings were changed.
Alright, that wraps up stand alone modules. Next up, we’re going to cover the available add-ons. These are modules that require power to operate, but contain everything else (GPS, broadcast system, etc) needed to be compliant. This is best for the folks who are flying foamies or FPV and just want to plug in the device to comply.

The amazing thing about this new regulation is that there is no standard established beyond what the FCC allows for power outout. Theoretically, you can build a module powered by a coin cell battery that won’t broadcast beyond 5 feet for more than 10 minutes and it would still be compliant. I see a future of cheap, Chinese-built, “compliance modules” coming to market when it’s finally established that remote ID will stick around.

As always, great video! I'll have to wait a little to be compliant. With the price of a module and repair cost for a cracked lens on my mini 2, I'm just going to wait and buy a DJI with standard RID in the near future. Meanwhile, I'll be flying a lot these next couple of weeks and get as much footage as I can before the 16th. My wife won't like it, but I'll tell her to take it up with the FAA. 😆

I agree about the difficulty of enforcing the RID rule. I think they will catch/fine people when they run into a reportable (damage) issue or if the FAA decides to do some random checking to verify compliance. While I'm not an attorney, I'm thinking that in either situation, they could compel a pilot to provide flight logs and they will know the status of the RID registration for the specific drone.

Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy a broadcast module for my Hubsan Zino 2+ so I'll put it aside, let my Part 107 certificate lapse, purchase a DJI mini 3 pro or better yet a Hover Air X1 and just fly recreationally. It would be interesting for someone to do a follow-up in about 4 months on "What it costs to fly at a CBO's FRIA?" ; not only in dollars but in scheduling and availability of the site.

The Spektrum SkyID people say that it is compatible with all receivers, just plug in a servo type cable to get power to it. Very smart way to save a bit of weight. I pre-ordered it yesterday for $69. It looks small enough to put on the inside of many RC planes. For Part 107 pilots, is it one RID for EACH plane or can you move it if you go and change it on the website?

A small plastic box will contain the battery and wires and I'll velcro the SkyID to the box and the box to the drone. We will see if that actually works. It's a bit complicated to piece it all together. The Remote ID regulation is under part 89, not part 107. Part 89 applies to drones that require registration (as per 89.101), that includes drones operated under part 107. 89.115 talks about modules as an option to meet the requirements. www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-F/part-89/subpart-B/section-89.115
@DavidLPitman
@DavidLPitman 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for this comprehensive look at the current marketplace! The ideal that each individual drone used under Part 107 needs it's own unique module is somewhat inconsistent with the FAA's explanation that RID's purpose is to associate responsibility of any particular operation to an actual human. Certainly, that can be accomplished with one, properly registered module moved between a particular owner's UV. But then, the FAA figured they would cost between $25-$50 dollars as well. I will be eagerly watching how this rolls out. Of all the regulations that the FAA has adopted with regard to UAS thus far, this implementation of RID seems to be the most "messy", for lack of a better word, so far.

Since I am in a configuration with larger batteries, and strobe lights, I figure I will need the remote ID module. In the less than 250g configurations, I will be using the light batteries and strobes (which i have weight them to check compliance). Will the registration for the larger battery, automatically require the use of remote ID modules on the light configuration? Thanks for the weekly information. Thank you for the great info. I'm surprised these things aren't built with aerodynamics in mind in the least bit. I chose my mavic pro years ago because of it's speed. I fly in Maui Hawaii often, have had the wind go from nearly nothing to over 25 MPH in a matter of minutes and have always had success navigating it back with it's ~40MPH capability. It seams like these are housed in hobby craft boxes. I guess this is just another way to make us buy something new which makes all my batteries, spare props and accessories just a useless as my drone. Not to get cranky with you. Thanks again.

Both Drone Scanner and Drone Tag apps picked it up and tracked it. Max range was about 1600 feet using BT Legacy 4 if attached to the back of the Mavic over the LED. Range was shorter at about 900 feet if I attached to the top of the Mavic. A second set of combo antennas did not seem to make much difference. Gregg I purchased both of the first two RID Modules -- I have received the Dronetag Mini -- It is heavy, documentation is incredibly poor. I have charged it up but not used it yet. There is a subscriptiong they want you to purchase - you get the first 6 months free -- again the documentation is very very poor thus it's not clear what the subscription if for? There is a setting "Public" vs "Private" - without proper documentation, I have no idea what this is for...when I have time, because the status lite is yellow, I will take it out side and see if this keeps the phone apps from see it (which it the only part of the FAA RID rule I don't agree with). I only paid $299.00 for the Dronetag Mini from Volatus Aerospace. As I stated before I have not received the Bluemark yet and I only paid $130 for it.

How do these modules go about ascertaining the location of the operators remote, if that remote does not have GPS? Isn't remote ID supposed to report the position of both the UAS and the Operator?

Good Morning Everyone! Im curious why the design of moduals needs to be attached to the drone and not the contoller. My flight controller (GL300K) for Phantom 4 Pro 2.0 has multiple inouts and output ports, what cant the information of location of the drone and pilot be provided by the fligt contoller? Its all literally provided on te screen or phone deoending on the controller. I just find this odd that this has not been a solution. However I could be wrong and DJI may even restrict that information from having the ability to tranmit or even be provided externaly.

Thanks, Greg. You briefly touched on "limited availability" of these modules. Drone Tag's modules, for example, are on back-order for weeks or even months. With the FAA's 09/16/23 date fast approaching, it's unlikely that there will be a lot of compliance by the deadline. Add to that the ridiculous over-pricing of these relatively low-tech modules by the few manufacturers that are making them, plus the general disdain for RID throughout the UAS community, and you have the making of a disastrous start for RID.

Sky ID is causing me problems when used on RC planes with telemetry. I bought it for personal use of speed and altitude, neither of which give data through telemetry to my radio screen. All updates have been applied. Plus fades/holds increase by a factor of 10x along with random holds when compared with/without the module. Andy Kunz and 3+ engineers from spektrum are aware and working on this but he's been quiet on the matter for 2-3 weeks.

The FAA is about to release new details about RID, and most likely extend the September 16th date.
@TheDroneAngle
@TheDroneAngle 11 ай бұрын
Currently, the FAA website will accept the same RID serial number for multiple drones, which actually makes sense. The Dronetag control App does have some setup for which drone you are using although I don't know if that info is broadcast. There is no real logical reason for a specific remote ID to be tied to a specific drone, so requiring one module per drone is ridiculous and an onerous requirement. I believe it's just an assumption from the extension of the requirement to register each drone for commercial pilots. The need is to tie RID to an operator, which their website does. The serial number of the drone needs to be tied to the drone, in case it is found. I think they now know that their $50 estimate was BS. I currently have two modules at the cost of $350 total, but 3 or 4 that I'll need to use them on. The big drone companies can suck it up, but I can't afford that. I'll end up sunsetting some of my drones and the ones that go first are the ones I use only for hobby purposes. I'm also worried about interference. What is the likelyhood of one of these modules interfering with GPS or the control signal, especially if damaged?
@PilotInstitute
@PilotInstitute 11 ай бұрын
Yes unfortunately even though the drone zone lets you duplicate the serial number, it goes against part 89 remote ID regulation for part 107 operations.

Lets get to some specifics. I have my 107 but really just fly for fun, except for a couple specific requests so far. Al drones registered under my 107. My Mini 2 will require an add on module if I fly under my 107. I also have an Avata and a DJI FPV. The Avata is listed on the FAA website as RID compatible, the FPV is not. However, in both cases I cannot take off unless I hook up my phone and run DJI Fly. But, people have reported that if you take off you can disconnect the phone so how is the Avata compliant????? Very confusing. I have not tested the phone disconnect, in process of moving and too hot in central Texas. Comments please!
@PilotInstitute
@PilotInstitute 11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how the Avata ever received compliance. To qualify for Stnadard RID, RID can't be tempered with. The Avata can obviously be tempered with... But yes, you can take off with the phone plugged in, disconnect it in flight, and continue flying.

From what I understand if you have your 107 you need RID. It doesn't matter if you're flying recreationally or not.
@pavlikmintz3621
@pavlikmintz3621 11 ай бұрын
@@Abb0nz1 I understood from Greg's discussion in an earlier episode that if you are flying under part 107 OR if your drone is registered under your 107 OR if the drone is over 250g then you need RID. Say you have a Mini 2 and an Air 2S. The AIR 2S has to be flown with RID because of its weight. The Mini 2 has to have RID only if you register it and to fly it under your 107 certificate. If it carries your recreational registration, then the Mini 2 (with nothing added to push it over 250g) can be flown under recreational rules without RID even if you have a 107 certificate. Unfortunately I registered my Mini 2 for commercial use since at the time I thought it would get an update for Remote ID. Now I have to either figure out how to unregister it and re-register it under my recreational certificate, or get an RID module for it (which I am not going to do at current prices).

Supposedly the UAS Remote ID Sept 16th date is going to be delayed again. Back to the modules, I'm really not sure what I will do. DJI is screwing Mini 2 (Part 107) operators. I guess they know without a firmware update, then we will have to buy another drone. It does not make sense (to me) to spend $200+ on a module when a used Mini 2 is not worth much more. I could probably sell the Mini 2, put that with the $200 needed for the module, and get a used Mini 3 Pro that would be compliant.
