Brilliant as always, Darren. I appreciate you being the pioneer at trying this thing out. Now, all I have to do is ship a few projects and make the jump light speed. Not looking forward to relearning the panel after 10 years, but hey... change is good.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marc. Im not going to pretend the relearn is easy. It's not. Im 8 years on the panel and a lot changed. It is def better but makes you realise how many redundant buttons you had before - easy migrate . I would 100% not install these keys until happy with V17 as it messes with your muscle memory. You think you know an old button name and it says something - it WILL throw you. I REALLY thought I knew my buttons but your brain makes you doubt when key says something else. screengrab/iphone image etc. the old layout when migrating. New layout is SO much better though!.

Having watched a lot of Resolve tutorials, can I just say that yours are head and shoulders above the rest. You explain things in an easy to understand straight forward manner and always get straight to the point. It's no surprise that the channel is growing so quickly and I wish you every success with it in the future. Maybe a possible idea for an upcoming video could be turning a colour image into black and white. The usual advice on this seems to consist of just turning down the saturation and adding a bit of contrast. I think it would be really interesting to hear a professional colourists opinion on this. I'm just a keen amateur and fairly new to video, but I think we should all strive to keep learning new things and you sir make it easier than most. Thank you.

Your explanation of how the software I use at an amateur level is deployed by a professional really held my attention. Idea for a (potentially very helpful!) video: video data level vs full data level. I've managed to get myself fairly confused on this topic. I loaded a display calibration video into Resolve (the video has bars of "white" and "black" levels up to and beyond 16 and 235). In the Color tab, the video displays as expected (ie higher than 235 is pure white,) but in Edit, each level is visible, so it isn't cutting off/mapping as expected. It's somewhat of an academic subject because what I'm doing is working (I shoot within the limited luma levels in camera) and exports look as expected, but it bugs me that I don't fully understand what Resolve is doing and how to be 100% sure I'm avoiding problems here.

(Now I'm just unclear on why that isn't on by default?). Thanks!

Hi Darren, when would you advise someone to switch from a mini panel to this advanced panel. I am putting up a post house which is being financed by some company and I am stuck on deciding if the mini panel will do for a start or go for the advanced panel. I really want to go for the advanced cause I might as well make more money from it since every job that comes has an equipment fee attached to it. So even at as low as $250 day rate in a 20 day working month the company should be able to return the $30,000 investment in six to nine months.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gilbert. Fantastic question. The mini panel is fantastic and great value. It wasn't available when I invested in the advanced panel back in 2012. If you are using daily and you can afford the advanced panel then ROI is a no brainer. It is much more than the mini panel. I have a streamdeck now so you can make quite a beast out of the mini + stream deck but I have never regretted investing in the advanced panel. I know a few colourists who have upgraded from mini to advanced and never regretted. It is about price at the end of the day. If you can recoup your investment in 6 months it is a no-brainer. Also for a long day grading the ergonomics of the advanced panel are far superior to the mini. The pricing is about right Id say for what you get. The re-sell would be good if you felt like it wasn't for you. I love my advanced panel - i could easily sell and buy a mini and have plenty left over but i wouldn't sell it. The mini is fantastic for those who cannot justify the spend - I love the mini panel, but the extra money is money well spent if this is your day job, like mine - you will be much faster in time on the advanced panel. Very best of luck with your decision and let me know if you have specific questions on it....very happy to help as it is a big decision. All the best, Darren.

Hi Nelson.We have the Tangent Element here in our second suite. Its a great control surface. The advantage is it works with other products not just Resolve. The Wave 2 I haven't used. The BMD mini is fantastic. If you are committed to Resolve this is definitely the one to go for. Far heavier duty than the elements. Far more functionality too. The element is NOT mappable so you are limited to how Resolve assigns it. I would absolutely go with the mini and a popular choice is to add a streamdeck for extra functions. Let me know whet you go for in the end - would love to hear.

Hi, Derren. I have photophobia, it's an eye discomfort problem that triggers migraine when the eyes get exposed to strong light, sunlight or a very strong room light, or even pc light. Do you think I can wear tinted glasses as colourist? or a pure anti blue lens glasses. Most of the time, I can use the pc, but I can't use it on a full brightness. Do you think I can also reduce my pc brightness to like 70%?
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this would not be suitable. Colour critical set up and exact settings and calibration are what enable colourists to perfect the images. blue lens or tints would severely affect how you grade the image. There should be NO sunlight or strong light in the room though, so this would be to your advantage. Sorry, it's maybe not what you wanted to hear. All the best, Darren.

@@DarrenMostyn Alright, thank you. I appreciate. But I said "Anti Blue lens" not "Blue Lens" I don't know if it's the same thing you're probably referring to, or something Else. So "Anti blue lens" is a crystal clear transparent lens without any tint on the lens. So what it does is, it eradicate the unseen blue light from the monitor or TV screen, to prevent digital eye strain.

@@DarrenMostyn I'm all for stuff that helps speed up ur workflow. For me I'm just learning resolve to make youtube videos. I find building macro keys on the touchbar of my Macbook pro with better touch tool reduces the mindless clicking and extra fingers to press a shortcut. I also found about touchportal or metagrid where u can map keys to shortcut using an iPad or ur phone. The problem tho not everything in resolve can be mapped or maybe I'm not sure if it can, I tried to look through the keyboard preferences. For example if I got a adjustment clip or fusion clip I made I want to create a hotkey for it and then make a button for it so I just need to press a button to add it to the timeline. I haven't figured a way to do that. Maybe if u know a way that would be helpful.

Its for anyone who needs the advanced panel - if you grade every day this will help your workflow. If you are occasional colour grading then might not be so cost effective. There are cheaper panels such as mini and micro. Hope that helps
