It's not about acting like other animals (side-note, humans are a kind of animal), it's about an inner identity. Take a moment to visualize yourself, not restrained by your physical appearance but rather without restrictions. For me, that gives me something that is not human. I feel nonhuman phantom limbs. When I'm stressed and anxious, my instinctive response is to hiss. I sometimes find myself walking on the balls of my feet/my toes as though I were digitigrade rather than plantigrade (and my mother always said I walked oddly and she blamed herself, but I would imagine that if all humans needed to learn to walk "properly" by walking on other people's feet, humans would not know how to walk "properly" in the first place) and while this is difficult, it also seems to be just as natural to me as walking in a more typically human manner. I sometimes have a strong urge to make sounds that humans don't seem to make (typically something akin to a growl/whine but with varying emotions). These things are not chosen actions, they just... Exist as part of me. Maybe my brain is wired a little weird, maybe my spirit remembers being in other bodies, whatever the explanation, all I know for sure is that I do experience these things as natural parts of my existence, and labels like therian, alterhuman, and otherkin suit me because of that, they're descriptive of my experiences of my existence as someone who, while inhabiting a human body, doesn't feel internally human. I mean, completely without restriction would just be no-thing-ness, essentially enlightenment... But otherwise I agree with what you wrote. It's a very deeply ingrained thing, certainly. It could be real (spiritual/neurodivergent) or it could be a trauma response (nonhuman identity is comorbid with CPTSD frequently enough that it is considered a possible symptom) but it really doesn't seem undoable, nor is it healthy at all to repress. Outwardsly I have always been hyper, curious, outdoorsy, agile, and a little destructive. Inwardly, I very obviously process this world much differently than normal humans. Not in a wrong way, just different. Similar to you I feel phantom limbs (mostly ears) prefer walking digitigrade, express myself vocally and physically in ways typically outside the normal human range. Not due to an autistic lack of ability to express myself otherwise, either. It just comes naturally to me is all. I actually was taught and taught myself as a relatively young child to repress all of these things until eventually they were just shadows in the deepest parts of my mind. When I rediscovered myself, it was such a relief. Like 10,000lbs had been taken off my back. I remember I just went out into the snow and walked around for hours, crying and laughing at once. I am a fox, I know from experience I can't truly stop being a fox, and truthfully I have no desire to not be a fox. I think the only major downside to being a fox is probably just being very different than everybody else. I get sort of outcast, because people can't really relate to me and they find my partial disregard for normal human conduct to be a bit uncanny, I suppose. Which is a shame, I think. Provided you aren't my enemy, I am a very kind and generous fox/man. But, oh well.
