I'm only a beginner at slide, but already trying out different materials. I'm a thick-glass man so far, but you and Justin Johnson are convincing me to try out ceramic. Thanks for the comparison. But it's all very subjective when you're just listening, and that's why I agree that there's a case for all of those you try out on this vid, and if we all have our collections of slides, it's because there's nothing like practising with each style of slide what best fits each player.

Like you I have a large collection of slides but prefer metal to glass or ceramic for acoustic slide. The brass slide has a slightly warmer sound and that would be my favourite, but none of them sound bad. It's all about personal choice.

Brass for anything acoustic. Ceramic or glass for electric.

Dang! I’m no slide player or expert, but just from the sound of it, I’d say ceramic followed by glass. Love your videos!

Wow-talk about subjectivity! Great video, man. I honestly find strong arguments for every one of the slides you used. I’m a ceramic man for onstage work, but find myself leaning to glass for the Ryland stuff, stainless steel for Lowell, etc. I guess that’s why us sliders end up with a collection of them, right? 😉

Brass and ceramic for dobro and heavy strings. Very bluesy. Imho Glass for light strings, heavy steel bar or bullet for lap steel guitar.

I've been playing slide guitar for over 30 years. And ceramic is my go-to slide, because of the physical density, and enameled glass exterior, and the ceramic interior that tends to absorb my the sweat from my sweaty fingers, and seems a little easier to keep in position on my finger, because of the friction of the ceramic, to hold it on my finger. And I love the Keb Mo slide, because it's the same color as my 1931 National Duolian painted neck

oooh nice guitar! I never thought about the ceramic absorbing sweat, but it does do that doesn't it?
@Dan09486 ай бұрын
@@BluesGuitarInstitute the physical density of the ceramic also stops string buzz faster than any other slide I played

I'd lean towards the brass first then the ceramic due to the suttle change and last I actually found myself liking the stainless.

The correct answer is: OK, there is no correct answer to which is the best. It is subjective, and looking over the responses shows that. For me, I liked the glass the least, but it was the favorite of others. When I started thinking about playing slide, I bought a set that included the four materials shown here. From favorite to least, my choices were brass, steel, ceramic, and glass, but I will say that I have no problem with others having other judgments.

I kind of like the ceramic or brass but they all sounded good. The glass was the weakest imo. But I do prefer glass for electric guitar. I’ve heard Dwayne Allman used a Craftsman spark plug socket for acoustic slide. And of course he used a corisidin bottle for electric.
@mairenaredАй бұрын
Lowell George used a Craftsman socket. Duane Allman used a Coricidin glass bottle.
@meotsАй бұрын
@@mairenared I knew Lowell used a socket but I vaguely remember reading in an old Guitar Player magazine from the mid 70’s that Duane used a Craftsman socket when playing his National Steel. If you do a Google search term of “Duane Allman playing National Steel” you’ll see multiple photos of him playing an acoustic and his National Steel using a socket. And of course he used a Corisidan bottle for electric.
@mairenaredАй бұрын
@@meots You're right. I assumed he used the Coricidin bottle for all his slide work but it looks like a metal slide on the old photos of him playing a resonator. Difficult to tell whether it was a socket or just a metal tube.
