Today we see which snail is best at cleaning a tank with LOTS algae. We have a mystery snail and a nerite snail. These two snails are very popular in the fish keeping hobby so we thought we'd test to see which one is the best at cleaning the tank.

Lol I have 2 nerites and one would leave the filter. He kept moving but he just kept exploring the filter. I later named him Phil (filter-fil-Phil). I couldn’t think of a name for the other one so I call him “not Phil”

I created a snail food / "snello" for my Nerites that 2 out of 3 actually like and will eat like little piggies! It's made from organic Spirulina Powder, organic Agar Powder and powdered calcium carbonate. When I first got my Nerite snails I had almost no algae in my tank and didn't realize that they wouldn't eat other foods. Out of desperation I created an organic, veggie snello that they actually LOVED and wolfed down in a matter of a couple of hours! It was a huge relief because they hadn't eaten for about a week and I was worried they would starve to death! I keep extra snello on hand in my freezer in case I ever need to transfer them to a new tank that doesn't have algae yet and I still give it to them from time to time to make sure they get enough calcium for their shells. BTW... they seem to eat the snello best when it's smeared onto a piece of driftwood or rock in the tank.

I came to the same conclusions you did :) I did try ramshorns and their similar friend trumpet snails, both really explode in population and are more of a bother than a help unless you're fine with hundreds of the buggers that you can't easily get rid of. I found the trumpets to be even worse than the ramshorns in this respect. And I think the ramshorns are a little cuter. They got into my filter and everywhere, and they are super survivors. I love mystery snails as a main pet. They have a lot of personality and are endearing. One other thing to think about is some fish may pick on them and bite their antennae. They do grow back, but that makes the mystery snail more shy. It's just fun to see them trucking around waving their antennae. It's also fun to feed them veggies and other things. I'm glad you mentioned they need high calcium. I used a partial shell substrate and would put in some cuttlebone and that seemed good for mine. Nerite snails are pretty but stay small. They are just efficient tank cleaners that you may not see a lot of. I think keeping them with mystery snails is good since mystery snails are haphazard eaters. The little white eggs can be slightly annoying but it's not the worst. I am glad they actually don't easily successfully breed or they could be a problem snail too. If you only have 1-2 nerites I think that is enough to get the job done and they don't lay that many eggs. One other important point is the snails may decide to vacate the tank if you have any openings or they can push a lightweight lid. I had this problem with mystery snails- mine wandered my room several times before I figured out how to close the hole around the filter. Fortunately it's easy to follow their slime trail and they generally can survive being out for a little while. My friend said her nerites also escaped but mine stayed put.

My Nerite snails are sluggish and one has a crack in in shell. Something that I notice between the two species is you can see the Mystery snail out and about while the shell of the Nerite you are lucky to catch them on the go and you never even see pneumostome , breathing tube. My substrate is lightly planted and is made of peatmoss and sand. They can spend all day just sitting in it without movement. I really do enjoy the progress of both. The small species of snails which hitchhike with plants are the very best at getting your tank looking brand new in a very short amount of time. Then as long as you don't overfeed, their population should remain manageable....even rising and falling again as food sources build than deplete. Thats the definition of balance.

A lot of Corys are "glass climbers" they can actually breathe air from the surface like a betta, so sometimes it's because the filtration is too low, but often once Corys are really comfortable in their tanks they just do this for fun. Nerite snails are the best without a doubt. Something to keep in mind tho. While Nerites cant breed in fresh water they do lay eggs especially on wood which can be extremely hard to remove. Other thing to know about Nerites, they cannot right themselves like other snails. This becomes a bigger problem as they get bigger. When adding them to your tank be sure to set them upright on the substrate. Occasionally they may get knocked off the glass by fish and can land upside down where they may end up stuck like that and starve to death if not found and righted first.

I have 20 active tanks and they all different snails that suit tge needs of the tank. I also keep scuds as well. They came from a friend on some plants he gave me. i can vouch for nerites laying eggs. i have 3 in my one tank and one keeps by himself and the 2 others are usually piggy backing across the tank. my piece of wood looks like a dalmation i had some eggs on the glass and they arnt easy to get off. my algae scraper doesnt even touch it but i can feel it going over them and it feels rubbery or like silicone lol. they do come off tho

I guess I have been lucky cause I have three nerite snails in my 29 gallon and I have never seen white eggs. It's my guppie tank and they do a great job with the algae.

What kind of snails can handle warmer water - like 84 degrees? Also, how about soft water? I'm having trouble with nerite snails at this temperature. I have Discus, so I need to keep it warm. Don't want bristlenose plecos either as when they get bigger, they eat plants.

I added apple snail today.. It started digging up in the substrate.. It did that in 3 spots within first 10 minutes.. I moved it back to quarantine tank for now.. . Any reason they do that? How to get it to stop? It id ruining the aquascape by digs and uprooting plants..

I have a nerite and a mystery snail in my 20 long neocardinia shrimp tank… The nerite hasn’t left the mopani wood hardscape since the day it was introduced 2 weeks ago, I can see little trails where it’s been eating my expensive wood decoration… it has t touched the algae, hasn’t cruised the glass, it’s just been eating the mopani wood. My mystery snail has been everywhere in the tank, on the glass, on the hardscape, climbing the plants it’s capable of climbing, I’ve even seen it snacking on the duckweed, it’s eaten more actual greenery in the five days it’s been in the tank than the nerite has touched in two weeks, it leaves my healthy plants alone, and only goes after duckweed and dying leaves My red ramshorns eat more algae than the stupid nerite…

My mystery diet is peas, zucchini, beans with added eggshells and cuddle bone, frozen and I add a chunk before she wakes up. My betta likes the peas too.

I would really appreciate some advice on nerite snails. I got them thrice.. one pair each time and they kept dying overnight. Idk what I am doing wrong. I have 4 healthy shrimps in the same tank I was putting them. I love snails but they keep dying 😓

Hate the eggs, but nerites are the way to go. I consider a mystery snail more of decoration.
