Actually, that was a really excellent video. I know a lot of the fundamental's intuitively, but this is the first time I've ever heard this stuff articulated in a way that the underlying details are open in a way that I can actually chew on. On a side note, 4 of the last 5 cars we have owned have been Legacy's, and we've never had a single issue with any of the CVT's in those cars. 1 of the 5 was an Impreza and we didn't have a lick of trouble with it either. Now my understanding from people who have owned them is that the forester is a different kettle of fish. I haven't heard good things specifically about the forester.

Here's my question? How long did you own each & how many miles on each before you unloaded them. I ordered my first Subaru a little over 2 years ago, no complaints thus far (Crosstrek Limited).
@stanjuan1178
@stanjuan1178 6 ай бұрын
@danielfair4675 I buy only used from a dealer with around 14k miles and I trade them at 80k. After they hit 90k, their trade in really takes a hit. I never take more than a 4 year loan so by the time I'm ready to trade I've got between 6 to 8k of equity as a down-payment on the next vehicle. I do the same with my GMC trucks This method pretty much ensures I never have huge repair bills. Shit happens but it's been a solid strategy

@stanjuan1178 here's my thing, lol. I just keep things and buy more. I've only bought 5 vehicles in the last 25 years, BUT I still have 4 of them. 2 were new, and the other only had 10,000 miles on it at 6 yrs old. I bought my first car back in 1985 and have owned at least 2 at a time since 1987. Half of those years I've had 3. 🤷‍♂️

This is the most in depth and on point review of the wilderness cars I’ve seen on KZfaq. There are videos doing off road tests. But I feel like I’ve learned more about these car watching this video than watching those real world off-road tests.

I love your down to earth style. It is like me listening to a friend in his garage telling me the experience of owning Subaru. I had an old 2011 outback and it lacked power if I packed it up with five people. Good to see the turbo should solve that problem.

Hi, @18:00 mark, just one note: the cut back corners make off roading approaches better. Anyone who's an avid/skilled off roader knows that taking humps at an angle reduces the *effective* approach angle. Thus, tucking up the bumper corners helps us off-roaders by allowing us to have a higher *effective* approach angle. It's literally something we all try to do when we mod Subies for real off-road use. Also, note the bumper cover is now multi-piece on the Crosstrek Wilderness, to accommodate replacing pieces instead of the whole thing, for the unfortunate off-road incidents when the cover gets bashed into something.

Thank you Claus, I have never understood Torque or RPMs so this was explained beautifully. I test drove the Forester Touring and love the roominess, visibility, easy touch screen, all but the poor heating of the seat was sure I was going to buy it, UNTIL, I drove the Outback Wilderness and the difference was shocking, loved the pep! I mainly drive in town and have two sheepdogs, so thinking Outback may be the car for me...just wish it had the same visibility. I'm a 60 yo woman and felt the Wilderness was a bit rugged looking, so maybe Outback Limited XT? I haven't bought either yet because I really don't like the huge screen, I was so concentrated on getting all the settings correct that I could barely focus on driving. Ugh! Anyway, much appreciate this video!

Thank you so much for explaining all that about torq and rpm. I’m in the market for a new car and have been so confused by it all. Your motorcycle story was helpful to put your explanation into perspective, I could visualize what you were talking about! I’ve been comparing the forester/outback wilderness to Hyundai Tucson hybrid. I’m mostly worried about passing cars on mt. passes, being able to gun it fast enough on an undesignated left turn when there’s lots of traffic, as well as speeding up fast enough on freeway on-ramps. But I also drive on a lot of forest service roads with bowling ball size rocks and deep potholes, but not really true off-roading. I wasn’t originally even thinking of the Outback, just the other two, but you really convinced me to add it to my comparison list! Thanks again for this super helpful review!

As a new owner of an Outback XT (turbo model) and having test-driven the Crosstrek 2.5l that's also in the Forester, I can tell you if you care the slightest about performance such as acceleration and passing speed, there's only 1 single reason to consider the base engine: price. If you can afford it, don't even think about the base engine because the turbo changes the XT into a completely different car. It's like comparing a 1980's car to a 2010 car. Off the line just the other day, I was able to keep an 2012 or so V6 Acura TL behind, which is definitely a huge win for the Outback in my opinion. The TL was actually trying to push too because he was on the right lane with a merge about 400m away but the torque of the Outback was enough to get the spring on him so he had to ultimately back off. Always fun to see people in sports sedans be so used to owning the block that they miss that little understated XT badge signifying the WRX engine in a raised family wagon. :) The ride quality and sound proofing of the Outback is also fantastic, making my wife and I finding excuses to go on weekend trips in it.

Thanks for the comprehensive reviews! I don’t mind the ‘greying’ on the cladding. My 2014 Crosstrek bought new, now has 39K on it. It gets up a hill a lil better than my former 2001 Forester did. Foresters got too big for my budget and lifestyle @ 10 years later, so I hopped over to a Crosstrek after that. It handles well - def has a tight wheel base. It hauls plenty of animal feed and other bulk items with the back seats down! Working from home saves miles! Small feathered farm animal needs keep down the extended road trips too. Thankfully it is holding up well! There’s confusion about all the latest tech and new features - touch screen issues, rear view mirror issues, power train, CVT, etc.,…not in a rush, but I’d wait a few years til some things (bugs, weak features) get ‘ironed out’. Thanks for the motorcycle driving adventure share! With @ 6 Harleys, a Triumph and a Suzuki in the family …the sound effects were wonderfully authentic! Let’s ride!

I have driven them all testing them with my son before we got him his first car. (The Outback) The first time I drove the Outback I backed it out of a spot and the pedal was so light. (Very Responsive). Very easy to drive and enough space to make you feel like you are in control. (My son who is 18 actually loved it) The Crosstrek is very zippy like you said fun to drive. Much louder than the outback. The best choice if you want a sporty type of vehicle that has off road capability. ( As a taller guy 6'2) I found the Crosstrek to be a little tight inside. I drove a 2023 Forester when the Outback needed service and I found it to be a nice vehicle. Much more head room than the other 2. It handled fine I didn't find it to roll as much as other people said it would when making tight turns. The long and the short of it, They are all good vehicles and I would recommend Subaru to anyone.

I have a 2018 Crosstrek Touring. I LOVE that thing. The ONLY thing I do not like about is that the gauges are terrible. The 11 inch touchscreen is way to big and gets in the way. That being said the 2024 Crosstrek has 4.11 gears. Quite a good feature.

Nicely done video. Forester Wilderness owner here. The things that made me choose Forester over Crosstrek was the crawl camera in the grill to avoid rocks (but 9 of 10 times I use it for parking!) and the full sized spare tire. You are not wrong at all about it feeling sluggish (doubly so since I came from an 06 Forester XT with a turbo). However the "1st gear” in "manual mode" is noticably lower than first was in my XT meaning I can now putt my way up the same steep climbs and remain in the powerband at 5kph. With the XT, I had to keep it at 17kph. The ride is much smoother now! 😂

Thanks for the great comparison Claus. Not many people actually own the cars they talk about so they end up giving us fluff and garbage like how many litres of catnip we can carry or whether the colour matches their prom night hair dye. I feel blessed to have a 2024 Outback XT after my 17 year old Impreza finally gave me too much trouble for it's worth last month but to hear your true car-owning insight on the Crosstrek vs the Outback Turbo puts my mind at ease with my purchase. The Outback XT's powertrain feels phenomenal, simply pulling and pulling all the way to 100. That turbo kick is really something to be felt rather than talked about. I also live in Canada so we experience true four seasons and with the Outback's driving dynamics I feel confident with basically whatever the weather Gods decide to throw at us here.

Since both your Subarus have the same tow rating, are you considering adding a receiver hitch to the Crosstrek? It would be nice to have a comparison video of both your vehicles in a real world towing situation.

I know they are “rated” the same but the crosstrek is lighter smaller and has less HP. It won’t tow as well.

@clauskellermanpov3004 true. I think towing capacity and realistically common sense should be taught a little more. Towing the same 2000 ib trailer. Depending the size will be so much less stable on the crosstrek than the outback bc of weight and size. :/

Awwwww, man 😅 I want one of each too! But including a Forester Wilderness, so yea, all three hahaha but I can dream. Congratulations! Crosstrek Wilderness looks exactly like a big giant Hot Wheels ❤

I'm a female long time subaru owner, first Forester now Outback. I learned more in your video about torque and approach angle than I ever have. Great video. I currently have a 2015 Outback and am thinking of getting either a Crosstrek or Outback, cannot decide. But your video helps!

yes. the crosstrek takes very very light oil. 0W18. may be smart to put in a slightly more viscous oil so it doesn't consume as much

I find that most people are buying these cars in Canada is because are roads are in very BAD condition, and when you wake up in the morning to a foot of snow you want something that you can rely on to get you to work or were ever you are headind.Great honest review keep up the good work😊

Have you ever gotten a chance to compare your two cars driving up some mountain highways at speed? I have an OBW but am considering the CTW. However, I don't want to switch if the CTW can't maintain the speed limit (or maybe a bit higher than that) while driving up steep mountain grades. I've gotten some answers from CTW owners that have helped but you're the perfect guy to ask since you have both cars. As for your CTW's shifter knob, I'm pretty sure all CTW's get the plain black one. I don't think it's because you got an early-built unit. Thanks for the video.

The crosstrek does not have the HP or torque of the outback. It will slow down on mountain hills or have to red really high. The outback can maintain speed in cruise control while towing my 2,000 lb trailer. Turbo too! No turbo on Crosstrek.

Klaus I'm letting you know this and all of your viewers the way you fix graying plastic if you get a can of Rust-Oleum clear lacquer it turns the plastic to brand new and it lasts the only prep you need is to wipe off the dirt spray on a dry surface
@davidmoore8741
@davidmoore8741 7 ай бұрын
U just need to take a heat gun to it... The UV light makes the oil in the plastic dry up and fades. Heat gun draws the oil back to the surface and turns it black again. U can use a torch as well but just gotta be very careful cause u can melt it

The crazy thing about the Crosstrek is you are getting the interior with all the bells and whistles of a top trim vehicle AND some exceptional offroad capabilities at what is essentially the entry price of a bare bones base model truck. Whereas once you start getting into the Outback Wilderness price range you actually start getting into some decent trucks or rock crawler price ranges. At that point you are trying to decide if you want to invest in comfort at the price of some rock crawling capabilities or the ability to climb rocks without the same comfort.

My first car was a 1975 Subaru. I paid $50 for it in 1984. No bullshit. It would do 60mph downhill, and where I grew up in Florida, there was only one hill.

Thanks Claus. That's very helpful. You did in fact cover some things I had not heard covered before. In the way of constructive criticism, I think you're a little repetitive at times, and could be edited to be a bit shorter. It may be in there but I didn't notice your mentioning the model year. Even if it's in there, it should be more conspicuous. Assuming the Crosstrek is a 2024, it's natural you would like many features in it better than the Forester or the Outback. The Crosstrek was redesigned this year and feels more modern. It is also quieter than the previous Crosstrek. For people who really value off-roading, I think the better approach and departure angles, the full-sized spare tire, and the forward facing trail cam make the Forester a better choice for off-roading than the Crosstrek. And, once the redesign of the Forester is out in 2025, I'm sure the superior features of the Crosstrek (like the slightly better torque) will be matched. Thanks again Claus. Good job!

Great video. You failed to mention fuel economy on either vehicle. I have a '17 Impreza 5dr and had a '20 Ascent with the 2.4L turbo that guzzled gas like no other. The Ascent was rated at 20/26 comb. 22mpg. Best I would get is about 18mpg with near 50/50 split hwy/city. Outback is a bit smaller so slightly better fuel economy but I imagine similar issues.
