Somehow we ended up with two Tundras. We need to sell one but just can't make up our minds about which is best. This video is a detailed walk thru of what we love and don't love so much about our 2006 and our 2021 Tundras.
Please let us know your thought in the comments.

I appreciate that you have all the offroad goodies in accessible places in the gen one and not adorned on the outside everywhere to try and look the part.

1st gen! All the way!! I’m biased because I have a 2004 DC Tundra that is pretty well built for overlanding. I have never owned or driven a newer one so can’t really say anything about them personally. I have talked to a Toyota tech thats worked for Toyota for 20+ yrs and he told me don’t get rid of the 1st gen. He said he see’s a lot of newer tundras coming in with all kinds of problems. He said a couple managers at Toyota have first gen tundras themselves and they are worth their weight in gold. That being said the 1st gen has been the best truck or vehicle period I have ever owned. Anyways, good luck on your decision which ever way you decide to go.

Gen 1 all the way!! I have an 02 sequoia that has never had one problem except hoses or belts. Everything you talked about except the back seat, can be added or changed. Leg room can't be fixed. If you ever get the engine compartment really wet on the Gen 2 you will be chasing problems forever. If the truck is really soaked, you are screwed because of fhe electronics. I had my Gen 1 in water up to the headlilghts once. Had to be towed out. Changed all the fluids, dried it out, and everything was fine. Ask a Toyota tech. Gen 1 is a simpler and more basic truck. I'm sure you've heard of the KISS principle. ( keep it simple stupid ). That's Gen 1 all the way.

The 1st gen will get you everywhere the 2nd gen will. 1st gen will be a certified classic. You have lockers. You can tow. Aka get a sequoia.

I'm sure you've already made your decision by now, but as a dad of growing kids as well. The comfort and the bucket seat in the 2nd gen are a big win. Especially if you're business is now in towing. Otherwise keep them both and let junior take the 1st gen.

I have a 2005 Double cab TSS Sport with 150k miles and love my truck. Bought it in 2008 with 47k miles and paid 17,000 for it. I've been wanting newer Tundra because my son wants my old one. I plan fixing up on the old one and driving a while longer

My 2012 tundra got the backup camera on the rear view mirror. Been contemplating throwing in a double din touch screen with an optional trailer backup camera port. Tundras have so many features that are comprehensive and make the car feel like a valuable asset.

As a first gen tundra owner, I feel youll have to pry mine from my cold, dead hands. I absolutely love this truck. However, sounds like you either need to keep the 2nd Gen or both for your uses.

I know you already sold the FGT. Saw your posting on Expo and Marketplace (I live in Boise!!!). That being said, you made the right choice in selling the FGT. I mean you already bought a brand new truck so you might as well enjoy it. You would have taken a much larger bath selling the new(er) truck than the old FGT. You'll also be able to keep the gen 2.5 for much longer and it doesn't have the VSC issue. I have a FGT as well but recently bought a Ram 2500 so I might be selling it as well.

Hello sir I am John Chan the fisherman. I own a 2007 tundra 5.7 liter with 189k miles on it. It runs perfect and there's no oil leak nor oil burning. I pull my 22 ft fishing boat every summer. My wife and I own my toyt tundra, 2018 nx300, 2013 rx350, 2023 gr86 and 2007 rx350. Love all my toyt. My truck worst mpg was 10.3 that's because I have lead foot. But high ways on cruise control it could get 17 mpg. My 5.7 truck isn't going anywhere for a long time. I hope you will keep the second gen for years to go. Good luck, thanks.

Well? What did you do? I’ve owned both! Second gen was totaled by a texting mommy. I own a 2005 with 120k. YOU have to sell your gen one baby or ( best) KEEP B0th. I love my gen one but it’s not as big for a family. Just got Bilstein 6112’s and all ball joints and looking forward to an updated ride… I love the simplicity of the 4.7 and don’t miss issues related to smog co2 sensors. Your kids gonna live that gen one someday.

Simple: Keep the 1stgen Tundra🤘🏽 Here in Arizona I have ran across people who have wished they had kept there 1st generation tundra when they see my 02’ tundra. Let’s be honest. The newer full-size pickups are great, but are also numb when off-roading and are simply oversized pigs. Don’t get me wrong as I actually love the 2nd gen Tundra. IMO the 2021 can not match your 04’ build when comes to over-landing or getting into some deep exploration situations. (Size) 💡🔧One idea with the 1stgen too help you with towing is maybe to talk with a shop about updating your rear end gearing maybe🤔 🏆🏆Listen- Either way both are Tundras and from the outside looking in your still winning either way bro! Sorry for the lengthy reasoning 😂

Traction control issues could be either be a defective yaw rate sensor or steering angle sensor. Both are easy to replace.

My first new car was a 2016 Tundra TRD PRO. It held its value so well, I did better on it than I would if I would have went with a used one. Sold it for 10k less than I bought it, and zero maintenance. Overall costed me $200 a month to drive. Between the lower interest rate on a new truck and no maintenance, they're usually cheaper to own in the end.

Luckily, you have two very nice trucks :) Good problem to have! I have had a 1st gen Tundra (stock) and currently have a 2020 tundra (mostly stock) so I have a little experience with both. That being said, I would keep the newer Tundra and sell the '06. Although you have put a lot of money/time/thought/effort into the '06, there isn't anything done (mods) that can't be done to the 2021 (except stretching the bed). The same can't be said if you try to go the other way - primarily you can't make the back seat any larger and if you are like me, your hope is that your kids continue to grow :) Both the 4.7 and the 5.7 are great, reliable engines but the 5.7 is stronger and consequently a little thirstier. Final thoughts would be to sell the '06, take the money and make the upgrades to '21. Good luck!

I bought a new 2004 right out of the showroom, drove it daily for 18 year and it became a part of me. Sadly,I traded it for a 2018 model and I miss it my 04 so much I would like to get it back,so I'm going to look for an 05 or 06 . The 2018 feels cumbersome and not like a Toyota, feels more like a Ford or a Chevy, I'm not too happy with it. In your case, I suggest that you keep both, If you let either one go chances are you will regret it.

Sounds to me you already made up your mind 😊 can’t go wrong either way. I like the 1st gen for nostalgia. Smaller but just as big as the new Tacoma. With a family I would go with the second gen. More towing power.

Naw there is a lot more space in the 1st gen. If had my family 5 in both, way more space. Don’t forget the 6 ft bed in 1gen vs 5.5 in Tacoma.

I found your video due to searching 1st Gen Tundra's. I like the 1st Gen Tundra better, but I don't have a family and need more room nor the benefit of the 2nd Gen towing capacity. The 2nd Gen Tundra is a plus for your family and your towing business. If I was you I would keep both. You would later cry your eyes out if you sold first gen and you would beat your self up for losing the better benefit options of of the 2nd gen.

DW- Great insight! I haven't met anyone yet who didn't kick themselves for selling their 1st Gen. Just met a guy yesterday who has owned a list of cool cars as long as my arm- he said his 2005 was the one that got away. We are starting to come around to the idea of being a two Tundra family. Best! AD

YES.... 1st Gen.... from Twin Falls.... enough said... lol nostalgia will carry longer than a motor and you have two of the best gassers ever built!! 4.7 and 5.7 and my preference is the 4.7 because it was actually built to aviation specs!! all the UZ motors are... so much heritage in those engines... absolutely genius craftsmanship... mind you that Lexus division with their pursuit of perfection pushed a billion dollars into their cars and they developed 2 of the 3 UZ motors.... so Toyota realized they messed up with T100 trying to put a v6 in full-size truck (still solid)... which are great trucks but US didnt' like V6s at the time.... so they came out with the second gen T-100 and tried to name it T-150 and ford sued them over the name! Toyota changed it to Tundra... and put a V-8 in it! and they grabbed this motor from their Lexus/toyota bone pile..... lol. this is the lightest chassis for this motor... Put in Landcruisers, Lexus LX470 and Sequoia's and a few 4-runners... mind blowing balanced motor and my truck is way more enjoyable to drive vs. what's out there today.... This was the truck that under promised and over delivered!!! and on Tundra.com forum many people have stated they wished they never sold their truck.... I'm only 2 minutes into the video but the fact you highlighted your early model Tundra first shows me the passion.... let's see how this video ends? lol

Have you ever done a zero point calibration to your 1st gen tundra ? I feel like it would solve the majority if the traction issues you’re having during turns.

I did. Several times. I also played with alignment, wheel spacers, amount of front lift (rake), all new bushings (swaybar). I called, I emailed, I tinkered, I tested- nothing seemed to work. Thank you for the suggestion though as it the zero point calibration does seem to have worked for some owners. Best! AD

I sold my 2004 Tundra 4.7 trd off road to a cousin and bought a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro double cab. There is no comparison keep the 2021. That 90 more hp and 85 lbs or torque more for essentially the same mpg is worth. Plus it is so much more roomy. Interested to know what you decide since it has been six months.
