Screenshot at 11:49 sums up the test nicely. It looks like the 400RV is the same unit as the 300p but with longer and dual hoses. Performance is lower because of the extra travel through the hoses. My guess is that model is geared towards the motor home (RV) crowd that might have dualies or double axles on the back and need the extra reach plus an extra set of hands. I’d like to see how the 400rv performs running two hoses from 15 up to 35 psi on a 33-37” tire. This would be helpful for the off-road crowd that doesn’t want to spring for an arb compressor or co2 tank

I think you're pretty much right. The compressor units don't seem to perform much differently, it is just the accessories. I can attest that having the extra hose has been amazing. Our new RV has LiFePO batteries tucked in the passthrough and are a pain to get to. Being able to hook to the truck battery, while hitched up, and still hitting those trailer tires is fantastic.

i might have missed something, but you're not going to get an accurate pressure reading while the compressor is pumping air into the tire. you have to temporarily stop the pump and then take the reading. overall, great video!

You are idling so put it on something soft inside the vehicle to prevent scratching any surface and turn the ac on and direct the vent to cool the unit while running. The kids seem excited.

The RV model maybe be worth it just for the extra hose and tools it comes with. I have no regrets on ours even if it is a little slower.

Nice video. Pity you choose the 85p as your lower end model. A better choice to use would have been the 88p. It can handle up to 120 psi, runs off the battery, has a higher air flow, 16ft air hose, 10ft power cord and marginally better duty cycle (25 min) compared to the 85p/300/400 (20min). That was my choice when looking around for car/suv. I had considered the 300/400 versions but it was overkill for my requirements.

mpcp27 How has the 88P been holding up thus far? I'm in between getting the 87P (draws 15 amps) or 88P (draws 20 amps). It will be used on a standard coupe, sedan and SUV. I am unsure if the 20 amp draw from the 88P may be taxing on the 12V battery even with the car running.
@mpcp273 жыл бұрын
@@vanquishstorm3806 ..Hi... The compressor is fine, I have had it for about 4 years and no problems. Its not a heavy duty usage item for me. Most times its used to top the tires (including spare) on 2 SUVs -Tucson sized, usually a 2-3 psi increase for each tire. And that's done maybe once in 1-2 months. When it's run off the car battery when the engine is running it is very fast. In terms of the 20Amp draw taxing the car battery while idling, I think an alternator should be able to handle the current draw. I haven't had any trouble when i used it off the car battery when running. Viair recommends running the car while using the compressor. I normally just use one car to run the compressor for putting air in the tires on both SUVs. However if you are concerned, you can use a battery charger after using the compressor to top up the battery, I would do this sometimes. When I was looking at the viair compressors I went for the 88p for the higher cfm, higher duty cycle, the extra capacity, (33 inch tires/120psi) and the longer air hose (16 ft) over the 87p (air hose 8ft). The price differential is only approx. $12 usd between the 87p and 88p. The extra hose length and cfm probably worth the extra money. Hope that helps you. Let me know if you have any more questions. Just some other info, I didn't want to keep the engine running when airing the tires so I got a used (2-2.5 years old) 12v car battery (650-850 CCA) that a colleague was changing out for a new battery. I run the compressor off that spare battery and then recharge the battery afterwards. I live in the tropics so car batteries usually only last about 2-3 years. I load tested the spare battery to make sure it had plenty life. I got about another 1-2 years before the spare battery died..I made the mistake of not charging that spare battery regularly so it sulphated and wasn't being fully charged (i.e. voltage drop to 6v under load). When the spare battery started to fail I noticed the compressor was not as fast or as loud (i.e., because of low voltage) as when it was being run off the running car. So I switched to running off the car until I got another used (2.5 years old) battery from a friend and it has plenty life. Under load test the CA didn't drop below 900. I have used it to air up a dolley tires and it was almost as fast as running off the car. I am charging this battery regularly to keep it in good condition. So you have an alternative if you are concerned about using the car battery.

@@mpcp27 Thank you very much for all the useful information! I ordered the Viair 88P and looking forward to using it. I like the idea of using a spare battery to run the charger off of it instead of having your car running to power it. I do have a battery charger so then I would be able to charge the spare battery after using it to power the compressor. To the best of my knowledge, I am under the impression that the 88P has a built in 20AMP fuse, has that fuse ever went bad resulting in a fuse in the car going bad due to it? Thanks again.
@mpcp273 жыл бұрын
@@vanquishstorm3806 Yes, -the 88p has a built in 20 Amp fuse. I have never had that fuse blow based on my usage and your usage sounds similar to mine. I have seen a review where a guy reported he has had the fuse blow but he admitted that it was under very heavy usage (e.g. airing up multiple 33 inch tires and running the duty cycle to the max etc). As for what happens if the fuse does blow, all that will happen is the compressor will stop running. The compressor fuse has to be replaced before the compressor can be used again. The 88p connects directly to the car battery and does not pull current through any of the car fuses. So nothing will happen to any of the car fuses. Now if you were using the Viair 85p which runs off the cigarette lighter then the possibility of blowing a car fuse will be an issue. The Viair 85p has a built in 15A fuse, and if the cigarette lighter had a car fuse of 15A or less, then you could blow the car fuse. With the 88p you will be fine.
@vanquishstorm38063 жыл бұрын
@@mpcp27 Great! That is one of the reasons why I wanted to purchase a compressor that attaches directly to the battery instead of the cigarette lighter due to possibly having issues with fuses going bad. I was under the assumption that a charger connecting directly to the battery shouldn't effect any fuses in the car but wasn't 100% certain. Thanks again.

It's just preference. I've heard that its easier on your battery and system to do it that way, but I don't know how much truth there is to that. I figure better safe than sorry! 😀

The voltage is higher with the alternator spinning. The battery is 12volts alone. But when running its between 13v and 14.5 volts because its in a charging state... Just a thought.
