Which way does the arrow go on my furnace filter? Videos to the Point!

Ever wonder which way the airflow arrow should point on your furnace air filter? Find out right here!
Remember, any heating or cooling system that uses a fan to distribute air is not only blowing air out, but ALWAYS pulling air back TOWARDS it. Your filter slot is almost always on this "return air" side (the "suckie" side, not the "blowie" side). So point the arrow in the same direction that air is moving past your filter slot. If you can't tell which way the air moves just by looking, then do the ol' lick-your-finger-and-hold-it-in-the-breeze test (just don't let anyone pull your finger during this test).
If your filter location is different than the one in this video (which it likely is) just remember that you want the arrow to point (say it with me) TOWARD YOUR FURNACE...or perhaps I should say toward the ductwork the air travels through to get back to your furnace. EXAMPLE: if your filter is located in a ceiling, but your furnace is down in the basement...don't literally point the arrow downward "at your furnace" (because it would be pointing at you, and I'm fairly confident that you are not a furnace), point it UPWARD toward the path the air needs to take through the ducts in order to get back to your furnace.

Actually I do! It was 7,253,819 the last time I counted. :) edit: that number has risen to 7,391,657 in Oct of 2019. edit 2020: that number has somewhat leveled out at 7,391,934 edit 2024: it appears the number of idiots on the internet has reached an all time high of ‘practically everyone’ 🤷‍♂️

I totally didn’t go back and triple-check the video in slow motion, screen shot the sides of the old filter and zoom waaay in trying to locate an arrow (should’ve recorded in 4K!)...that would be ridiculous! But that filter has the cardboard cross supports on both sides (for people who might actually put them in backwards).

TIP : My uncle taught me this years ago. Once you learn the directional airflow. Take a Sharpie Marker and “ mark a arrow with airflow” on the metal furnace. Done.

thurm101 that is a great idea! So in the video if I drew an arrow on the shiny duct next to my white filter box the arrow should be pointing to the right “towards the furnace”

So strange. I imagined the arrow would be pointing in the direction that the air is flowing. When I place my hand in there, it feels like the air is flowing away from the furnace, so I pointed the arrow away from the furnace. After all, that's the way the arrow works on a CPU fan for example. Glad I went here to double check. Oops! The arrow should be labeled better.

Well… the arrow actually does point in the direction the air flows. It’s just very hard to tell which way it’s going at the filter area because of all the turbulence going on.
