Amazing what you guys do to make your reloads as perfect as they can be. I reload for my sniper rifle with federal brass and 175 grain Sierras but I never new about all this bullet trimming. I get under 1moa at 800yds depending on the wind but at 100yds .5 moa on a good day. The best group I ever had was a 3 shot 2.75 inch group at 800yds but the wind was just right. I know this is not great when I see the groups you are getting. My rifle is just a blue printed Remington 5R with a factory H+S Precision stock and a 10x Super Sniper scope. I load the 308's to factory 2.80 OAL. with 43.5 gr of Varget. I trim my brass but that's about it. Seems like you take lots of time preparing your ammo, I enjoy learning all that you do. Thanks.

Thanks for the education. I was just on a newer video of yours and someone else was mentioning wanting to understand pointing. I think I get it but I'd love to watch you break down the different parts of the shape of the bullet in great detail. I think I've figured out the pointing and trimming process but maybe not.

Matthew Jones It will help as I mentioned in the video. Once the bullet is in the air, we lose all control of it, so ensuring BC is consistent from one bullet to the next will ensure that they all follow the same path.

It looks like you had a video where you used this die to point a bullet, what happened to it? From the video it sounded like you don't actually point bullets, is that true? Also, would you meplat trim then point or vice versa?

I watched this video to learn what bullet pointing is. Towards the end of the video I learned that bullet pointing increases Consistency by increasing BC consistency. I wanted to see what the bullet pointing die actually does to the bullet. Does the bullet pointing die shave off material ? Please advise
@FclassCommunityCHL9 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting debate if trimming the meplat is necessary to getting a more uniform BC you definitely lose a tiny bit of bullet mass in the process which affect BC in the minutest sense how much is unknown. I would make for a great test and comparison. Recently I got information that Whidden doesn't see trimming as necessary once the bullet is pointed. I quote from my source who talks to John on a regular basis "Whidden quit making the trimmers as once pointed they made no difference according to John Whidden". For myself pointing definitely produce more consistent results at longer ranges fewer "flyers" for sure. Keep up the videos very informative especially the comparator ones.

Need More Ammo Productions so whidden has stopped making these? honestly, for the price, why not pay premium prices for custom bullets vs paying for this die for $221?
@FclassCommunityCHL9 жыл бұрын
Andre Isis Whidden still makes the bullet pointing die they don't make a Meplat Trimmer or see a need for a trimmer from what I gather. What would you consider premium bullet? Lapua, Berger, smaller bullet manufacturer like JLK? Even with some of the higher priced "premium" bullets you're going to get some inconsistent points on bullets as a result of equipment changes. Not all manufacture re point their bullets after the bullet die machine stamps out the projectile, the only bullet that comes to mind that are re-pointed are the SMK#2156. The pointing die is to close the meplat opening so that the profile is suppose to be more streamline and consistent in taper and shape.
@ruhurtin4squrtin349 жыл бұрын
Need More Ammo Productions jlk is premium bullet as well as matrix. on one hand, the word premium seems devalued if you have to keep buying more stuff to get accuracy...ala money trap.
@ErikCortina9 жыл бұрын
Andre Isis JLK also need to be sorted, trimmed, and pointed in order to compete against the World's best shooters. Since the work needs to be done anyway, might as well buy a good bullet without paying the premium price for "premium" bullets and use the money saved to buy tools that will make those bullets more consistent.
@ruhurtin4squrtin349 жыл бұрын
Erik Cortina well there is then an arbitrage in that point ie premium bullets are overpriced & not needed then. but for regular shooters, i assumed the premium bullets provided a service where one didnt need to engage in further money spending.

Does this mean that my projectiles in the yellow box are not consistent
I never even heard of bullet trimming and pointing. to obtain consistent BC, thanks for sharing Erik, is this strictly for bench shooting and not for hunting?

It’s for consistency. You decide where you apply it. 😉

Anyone have any opinions on a non bushing vs a bushing FL sizing dies? I'm just getting started and am just shooting a regular AR in 223. I'll get a bolt gun before to long but I really want to have a good handle on reloading before hand and I'll probably use these dies for both... start with one die maker and stick with them.
@PatriotPaulUSA2 жыл бұрын
You Do Not want Bushing dies for an AR especially! I thought I would do the 1 brand of dies when I stated a few years back. Lee's are decent, USA made and cheapest, I started with them. Wanting better quality for my long range and magnum bolt actions I moved up to Redding dies. (they are 3-5 times the price) I later found Forster seating dies to be even better. Finally I found Wilsons arbor press type micrometer seating dies to be the best for precision bolt gun ammo.(long range precision) Eric uses them too. My point is I ended up with 4-5 brands and have a few specialty dies for other things. It doesn't matter if you have 1 brand or a dozen in the end. You will end up using what works best for you. I still recommend starting with Lee's to most folk. For an AR type rifles I would make sure you get small base dies. Read up if you don't know why. Its important. I use the Lyman 4 pc small base AR die set for my .223 and .300 BLK loads myself. Its good quality and not super expensive. I am just starting to load 6.5 Creed for a AR10 so I am experimenting there still. When you get to a long range precision bolt gun you may want to move up to better quality dies than Lee probably but they will work fine if its all you have. There are just better options when your trying to make your hits more accurate at long range.
@alexmason1387 Жыл бұрын
There’s nothing wrong with using a bushing die for an ar, but if you aren’t uniforming neck wall thickness you could be inducing bullet run out. Lee and hornady make useable starter dies and will make more accurate ammo than what most shooters will be, but if I had to start off all over again and was in your shoes I’d probably go with a set of hornady custom dies, and then when you get your bolt gun, remove the expander ball from the die and acquire an expander mandrel die with the appropriate mandrel to set bullet neck tension
