In this video I wanted to have another "Collectors Corner" segment where I talk about some of the recent stories going on in our hobby. Obviously its been on heck of a month between everything going on with CGC, Glen from the comic palace and also Jonathan Majors/Kang and The MCU. While we are def in a down market I want to just take a moment to remind ourselves to stay focused on our collecting goals.

CGC is lucky to have so many of the community doing detective work on this scam, and they need to embrace any help offered to them to trace these books, and bring the culprit(s) to some sort of justice. This is one way to start to get some trust in their process back. In the meantime it looks like raw books are back on the menu.

CGC has 2 choices. Redesign the slabs to prevent this problem and or all book submissions for reholders require regrading going forward. Also, quickly pursue legal charges against the scammer.

People who buy comics to read and enjoy the art have nothing to worry about ever. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have your books properly appraised of condition and then protected for piece of mind. If you treat these books as stocks to speculate on and hype and flip, then don't let the door hit you on the way out.

There is more than one facet to comic book collecting. One is the reward of having held onto them for decades (after enjoying the stories and art for so long) and then having them cleaned and pressed and graded to be able to sell in your later years and benefit from the profit! There is a little speculator and investor in all of us, whether it metastasizes sooner or later in life. They can morph from a source of entertainment and joy in our younger years to stocks and bonds when we get old. Nothing wrong with that. The only thing wrong is when you seek to deceive the buyer.

The CGC stans are probably sperging because most of the value of their collections is tied up in slabbed books. I have plenty of CGC slabs, but most of my collection of Golden and Silver Age is raw. Never put all your eggs in one basket, would be my advice.

Dealers, flippers and speculators playing the comic book market like it is the stock market are the ones shitting their pants right now. As a comic book fan I don't fear the comic market crashing as I can buy more comics that I may not have had the opportunity to in the past.

Cgc has literally sent me a graded comic that they forgot to seal the slab so is just pops open with no damage … could have easily swapped a comic but I didn’t… CBCS has a superior slab 💯

I am not fearful for comic book values going up and down. I don’t buy comic books with my primary family money. That money pays the bills, goes towards investments, buys groceries and gas etc. my comic books are completely separate or ancillary to the main priorities in life. Also, my parents taught me that on both sides of collectibles and investing…you haven’t lost or gained anything until you sell.

Wouldn’t be surprised if CGC stays silent on the issue, but there are definitely updates they could make to make their slabs more secure. For starters, they could put the cert number on all three parts of the slab: the label, the case, and the inner well. Then this would give them an opportunity to get collectors to regrade their entire collection. 😂

As the label and inner well are separate pieces, just putting the CERT number on those two parts would be enough to prevent a label scam.

Strongly adhesive hologram stickers on every edge of the case would mitigate opportunities for fraud. I don't know why CGC hasn't been doing this all along.

I am 70/30 70% a collector and 30% an investor. I do have comics that I want to keep just to add value to my collection but the bulk of what I have is history and has more sentimental value. For me the price drops would actually be beneficial to my collection

Im much the same way. I have runs of titles nobody but myself cares about that I value more than a lot of my graded books, though those graded books can be turned into capital to purchase more books for the collection.

I think it’s funny. For the last few years during the comic boom, we had so many people saying they wished prices would come down to pre-pandemic prices. And now that they have they’re tapping out of the game? Good. More for us.

I'm 62 and have been collecting stuff since I can remember, have built a model car collection and sold it and currently selling my toy soldier collection at an auction house but comic collection will go with me to the grave, it's my twilight years passion and nothing will change that..merry Christmas bud

This is exactly why you have to be a collector that actually enjoys comics. You cannot strictly be in it for the money due to greed of collectors and companies becoming mundane with the hiring of talent. Readers lose out just like comic investors and you have to develop awareness on both fronts and learn to sit it out from time to time. I've seen forgeries and mislabeled issues since the early 90's and realized then to never trust anything first time around. Never follow the hype and wait out the madness. Comic book investing and dealings allows too much access to become a victim of fraud.

When you buy a book encased in a slab you have no way of examining what you are buying before you buy, so CGC labels have to be trusted, once they are not, then it's done.

As far as everything I mean I've been collecting for over 40 years I have a very large collection and a large graded collection on top of that but it's not going to stop me from sending in my books to get graded I would just be more cautious on those I already have a lot of those books that are being fucked around with so I'm not have any concern about any of those I know what I have already so I wish everybody else is a Merry Christmas and just don't give up on the hobby

They need to release a list of every book from that account. Issue a recall. Crack them, reappraise. Take the hit and cover the difference for the owners if need be.

It will be interesting to see if the lack of confidence in CGC recently affects the auction houses. There might be some good deals or ticking time bombs.

At the end of the day, it's all about the love of the hobby. If we, as collectors , get to buy some cool comic keys on the cheap, all the better. There are solutions to this current scam, CGC can implement. But it will likely drive up grading costs again . Safest bet is to do away with reholder and just regrade the books. I've been wanting to commit to cbcs, but couldn't bring myself to do it due to the true value that cgc slabs hold. This however, might be what ultimately makes me swap. Cgcs has had their problems in the past, but if they don't even bother to address the importance of this issue, I really can't see them remaining reputable, at least in my eyes.

At this point CGC should publicly release ever serial number from this guys submissions and offer a free re-grade to all current owners. It really wouldn't cost CGC a lot, and the transparency would buy back some of the credit they've lost with folks, as well as just look good on their part for trying to rectify this mess. It would also help clear out the ghost books from the census. It never has and never will be perfect, but the more they can clean it up the better.

In fact, it was much more egregious when CGC knowingly and wildly over graded every book in the promise collection than some guy that slipped in a couple of jeweler books for some of the most overprinted books in history.

If CBCS is smart, they will try to capitalize. If I was CBCS I would put an immediate crossover deep discount for all CGC books. I would try to get all those pissed off CGC clients by offering a 25% to 50% discount on grading fees and get those pricey key books into CBCS slabs.

CBCS just figured out how to update their labels after years of consumers telling them their labels suck. And, the labels are still mediocre. I don't see CBCS capitalizing on this. AND, we don't know at this point. If CBCS has same problem that CGC has.

@@chriskuneman3310 CBCS didn't update their labels for years because of a strong belief in that the label and grade should never be the star of the slab....the comic should be...always. Do you really think CBCS was not aware or only "just figured out" these new labels? (which are fantastic by the way!) They are a company with conviction that ultimately agreed a label change was due. CBCS's slabs (amongst other things as well) are ten fold more superior to CGCs....this scam is way less likely to occur on a CBCS slab because it's way harder to compromise. CGC is rapidly becoming the new PGX with its constant problems, inferior products and services etc.

I’ve been collecting since 1983. The hobby was around before the grading companies, MCU,influencers, and before I started collecting. The hobby will be fine but the situation needs to be addressed yes. Thanks for your content.

Would just like to show some appreciation for your video on managing your comic book collection like a sports franchise. Prepping a chunk of my collection to sell online and to set up at a show with a buddy so I can move my young stars and future draft capital (minor keys) to acquire a new superstar to build my franchise around (an Avengers 4 or House of Secrets 92). Thinking of my collection this way makes collecting so much more fun especially when you add a salary cap (yearly budget) and have to get creative for acquiring the more pricey books. If ever there were a damning indictment for staying away from slabs. I know that won't happen, but still. It makes me think twice now before I buy. I really want to shift back to raw only, and hope to God that deals stop charging graded prices for ungraded books.

Ever since I was a kid, I wanted a first print dark Knight returns. It was always outreach pricewise. You can get beautiful copy cheaper than ever right now, you can get the whole set first print. I think this is a great time to be collecting comics. Appreciate your videos.

I had a collection of 8 long boxes and 8 slab boxes. Mostly keys and high end runs. Beginning in 2022 i started the great purge. I am down to 1 long box and 2 slab boxes. Couldn't have timed it better. My collection would have been down 50% easily.

It's abundantly clear that CGC is really dragging their feet on responding to this. But, I think a large shadow will loom over graded books purchased after the initial grading.

Sticking to trades for the most part, low barrier to entry. Might dip into raws for keys or variants of favourite covers and display them. Omni/trades market is much less dramatic

Yo, Swag - Thanks for covering the CGC situation. If you are interested in covering this from a different perspective, you might want to look into info about how the Johnson & Johnson company handled the 1982 Tylenol murders - though the situation there was much more serious, it was another example of a trusted brand being thrown into crisis by phony lookalike products. The response from J&J was swift, sensible and brave, and it has long been considered a textbook example of the right way to respond to a crisis that creates consumer doubt. You could discuss some of the things J&J did, and contrast with CGC’s response, or lack thereof. The University of Oklahoma has a good summary available online, “Johnson & Johnson: Response to the Tylenol Crisis.”

The last book I got from cgc still hasn't updated the census...I have a picture of the census from a month after I sent the book in ...almost 3 months later I got the book back and it's still the same number ...so either they didn't update or the graded it almost immediately and just sat on it for months ?? I've only sent 3 books all year ..I don't use it often so who knows

Perhaps there will be a return to collecting more raw ungraded books, as graded /slabbed books have lost their credibility. So scammers have screwed it up for the grading industry. CGC and CBCS will have to re-tool and revise their slab materials and encapsulation process - if they want to recover.

I got into collecting because of my sisters and a family friend who was a well known comic artist, comic collecting and working in this industry has had it’s ups and downs. I could say that within the last few years plus the Covid thing that a lot of stupid idiots created a lot of problems but it’s not going to stop me from a cool hobby.

Never bought any slabs and have never had my books graded. Glad I waited. Once this scam is done, I might consider selling my whole cellection. But there need to be legit regulations. This all discredits CGC, sad days

Reserved Investment channel total changed my mind on comic collecting last year when i got into his channel. I only buy CGC comics i intend to keep because i love them. Investment wise i will buy into S&P 500's ect. Been collecting for 47 years & selling most of my 27000 comics. New comics are totally trash to the older stuff

We all expect CGC to make some kind of statement...but who really says they have to. Think, all they have to do with the reholder crap is to just to put the book in a nee slab. I wouldn't be surprised if they just come out and say that they will now start regrading instead of just throwing it into a new slab and that's it

No matter how his plays out, it looks really bad on CGC. 1. CGC f'd up and reholdered a book completely wrong. 2. It was an inside job at CGC and it was purposely done at/by CGC. 3. Someone did a swap and CGC themselves could not even tell their own slab had been tampered with when the person submitted it for a reholder. The bottom line is they need to properly address this because how deep does this go?

When MCU issues happen with actors or whatnot, to me that should not affect a comic's value, at least so drastically. As far as people wanting to cash their whole collection in because there's scammers, do you but aye if you graded it yourself you know it's legit or jus keep em raw.

Hey, someone has to point out scams when they happen, because influencers also do a lot to prop up a market. It doesn't much change the hobby, but the business side is definitely affected. In the meantime, markets go up and down, and collectors will keep buying what they love.

Sorry to get off topic here but it occurred to me looking around at your walls with the books on display. Aren’t you a bit concerned with the covers fading? I notice this being a common thing with a lot of people that I watch on KZfaq. I keep my books in the dark.. like mushrooms..lol. Love the videos my friend.. 👍

Hey, hoping that you can reply to is suggestion for everyone scammed by this seller. CGC has already given people a way out. I remember a video regarding a HULK 181 missing value stamp that was in an old CGC blue label. When the person cracked the book out and found the marvel value stamp missing he spoke with CGC about the issue. CGC said that if he had sent the book into them and they found the issue that they (CGC) would be on the hook. So that’s what buyers, who believe their book(s) have issues, need to do. Send these books back into CGC. If CGC finds an issues, within the blue label like restoration or missing pieces or pages, CGC should be giving that person the FMV of the book. Let me know if you think that it’s a good suggestion. Either way CGC has to do the right thing.

I might be in a minority, but I do not blame CGC for this. They were victims in this as well. Someone figured out a way to tamper with the slabs and DEFRAUDED CGC. It was straight up deception for financial gain on the individual who did this.

I’ve had my last 3 orders show up with every damn slab broken. I’ve literally been black pilled on cgc I’m a full blown hater. I’m just doing clear boards and mylars now cgc’s value was way down before this news. If they don’t address this publicly it could get ugly for them fast.
