#whippet dogs. What are they really like to live with? Find out from an owner who's had this popular dog breed for over forty years. There's advice on exercise for these which can run in short bursts at over 30 mph - and it's nowhere near as demanding as you might think. Plus there are top tips on #whippettraining - especially "recall" which is essential for sight hounds with an instinct to chase prey at very high speed. A Kennel Club accredited trainer points out how some leads can be very dangerous for the whippet breed. There's good news in the dog grooming department and in a guide to a whippet's health. as well as caring for #whippetpuppies. Enjoy the video and - as always - please add your comments or any advice you may have on caring for a Whippet. They can run up to speeds of about 33 to 35 miles an hour in a short burst. But yes, they absolutely look amazing when they're stretched out. Really going full throttle. You just stand there and you think that's beautiful. They're very loving. They can be mad as hatters, but they're so easy to keep. So healthy. They are one of the few breeds who have not got any real health problems. I've had whippets about 40 years and I wouldn't swap them for anything. I've only ever been without one for about two weeks. And I just so so missed it that I ended up going and getting another one. The whippet is a racing dog originally, and resembles a small Greyhound. But they are actually an extremely loyal and affectionate family pet. Whippets are sight hounds - so their idea of distance is completely different to yours. Two fields away is fine by a whippet. So the training - you really want to be thinking about recall, re-call and then even more recall. Sight hounds mean they hunt through their eyes. They'll catch sight of what could technically be prey - in days gone by was a rabbit or a hare, and they will stand it - well I call it stand it - they will watch it then they'll go. Straight away after the prey. But it's a thing that you train for. If you're going to let your Whippet off, you've got to make sure it's a secure place that they can't get out of. It will run across roads if you're not careful. The safest way is not to let it off lead unless you can rent a paddock or rent a space in which you can let it off safely. One other thing with whippets - I've seen whippets on retractable leads. And they go from 0 to very very fast, very quickly. And if it's on a retractable lead and it's on its collar, it can do some serious damage to its neck. So you may be thinking to use a harness. But you still need to think about caution because it's still going to accelerate very quickly and even on a harness it can injure itself. So care always with that recall. They don't need an enormous amount of exercise. It's quite a myth that because it's a hound and a running dog as people would know them as, they need to have a lot of exercise. I take mine out for about half an hour every day and that seems to do the trick. They're well happy, they're healthy and fit. Obviously they do like to free run - and once they're past the puppy stage, free-running is fine - but up to about 6 months, controlled exercise more than free-running. If you give them too much exercise too soon, it does affect their growth. They can become very very leggy or they can get too much muscle and it constricts the bone growth as well. It is a very very popular breed, basically because they fit to any family or domestic situation. Whippets are lovely little dogs. Sometimes they can be a little bit on the shy side, if we got a shy one in, we would look to re-home it in a quiter household that wasn't too busy for the dog to cope with. They need medium exercise levels. They enjoy a good walk but are also quite happy to be a bit of a couch potato - and snooze a lot of they day. So they can make great friends and companions. They live happily with loads and loads of other breeds.

As a long time owner of Whippets (up to 4 at a time) it grieves me to hear people say they are a sighthound, they are much more than that. This takes away the other exceptional qualities they have. Countless times in wooded areas I have seen them scent the air to detect the presence of something. Their ears start to work like radar aerials and despite background noises (a stream, rustling leaves etc.) they home in on the location until their sight finds the bird/animal. Don't sell them short by saying they are just sighthounds.

I've had whippets for 20 years and i've always had them off the lead. They follow me just fine and don't suddenly run off like a Saluki i've had. So many videos make it sound like you can't let them off the lead and I really don't think this is true. My absolute favourite breed out of all the other breeds. People stop and video my whippets when they run around because they're so amazing to watch.

I agree. Our whippet walks better off the lead on his outings than he does on the lead. It was easy to train him to cross roads. Now he stops automatically and waits for commands with his little ears pressed back. Love him!

I need to disagree with some parts of the video. Especially the way she holds the show leash. I got a show whippet of my own and would never dare to pull his head up like that, because there is a risk of hurting their throat. I would also recomend show leashes that aren't so thin but wider around the throat. Another fun fact is that with a little bit of training, treats and words like 'where's the cat' can help to keep the dogs head up in the perfect way while the leash is just hanging loosely. Next thing is that whippets NEED exercise! Of course they are couch potatoes but they still need their daily sprint or else you don't own a happy dog! (Or a sprint all few days but then a few ones in a row) It is in their blood to run, not long distances but short distances in full speed so that they can stretch their bodies out completly. Of course it would be good to have a safe location with a fence around it to keep your whippet from running after a deer or hare but if you understand when and where those wild animals are and understand the body language of the whippet then of course you can let them run free. And even if they run off after a hare don't panic. Keep calm and go after them. Also don't scold them to hard for this because it's simply in their blood. For example my male (now 6 years old) killed his first hare when he was only 6 months old. Yes, with 'first' i mean that this wasn't his last hare. Another recommendation to those who want to get a whippet is to brace themselves for a second dog. I to be honest think that keeping a whippet alone at home, even if he/she can play with the neighbours dogs, is not such a good idea. It's always good to have a second dog. Or even better a second whippet. That way they don't feel alone if you go out shopping or something like that and they can also put their energy into playing around with their friend. I got three whippets and even tho the oldest is already twelve she still runs in full speed after my male, litterly playing tag with him. That way you can let them sprint around together. Another thing is to NOT use toys which are attached to a fishing rod!!!!!! It only makes the whippet go crazy over moving ground objects and the risk of it running after a hare later on gets even higher! I would generally recomment to not use toys outside. For playing you got your second dog or simply let them dig for mice. Don't scold them when they catch a mouse and eat it, just leave them be except you know that the mouse might have eaten poison from a near by field (ask local farmers when they use their poison against mice and rats). I know it's gross to hear the sound of bones cracking but bear with it. That way your whippet had a positiv ending. If you take the mouse away from the dog, he or she might get frustated and will only try to either get it back or get another one. And one day the dog might even stay out of your reach cause he or she is scared that you might take their prey away. Also when it is raining outside or it's windy and your dog doesn't want to go outside JUST GO OUTSIDE. YOU decide when to go outside, not the dog. Just put a rain coat on your fast friend and go on a walk. After a few meters they will be glad to be outside belive me. And if you got more than one whippet they will most likely go crazy and play around outside and inside after a walk when their fut is a bit wet. Also it would be good to go outdide with them EVERY SINGLE DAY. Generally with EVERY DOG no matter what weather. Ok if it's raining like crazy or a big storm then just go out in the calm phases or just stay inside. Also only 30 minutes is way to less for them. For nearly every dog it is to less. No matter if the dog is big or small they all need a good walk! For a whippet, like i said before, it would be really good if they can sprint and let their whole energy out. Not only that but also their pee and poop. Even if you got a garden dogs still want to leave their marks outside. So far i've noticed to dogs pee more often when they are out on walks than when they are in the garden. Even better is when they don't know the route you are walking them because then it's even more interesting for them due to all the new scents. I'm not saying that you should take a new route every day but that you should switch them up. Don't always walk the same route. Have like atleast two to five different routes and switch them up. I for example got atleast 10 different routes i can walk and often switch them up or simply walk a completly new one. And now to the breeders... If you want a whippet get them from a good breeder where you know that they are completly healthy! Best would be when the breeder already teaches the pups about cars, walking sticks, other animals such as dogs, cats, horses etc. Stuff like wheelchairs and strollers should be included in this training too. The earlier the pup get's used to these things the better. I could keep on talking like this but that will take to long and my phone has already a pretty hard time to keep up with my fingers so i will stop here now. I hope this was a bit helpful and if i got any typos or grammer mistakes or what ever then i'm sorry but my mother language is not english. Thanks for understand and have a nice day with your friend(s) on four paws!

I definitely agree with most of your aspects (I didn’t read it well sorry 😅) But her dogs looked really untrained and a bit to fat, I know other people would say they look thin but that’s just how whippets look like. We have 8 whippets and also breed them and do cousins and racing and I actually disagreed with most parts of this video as well. Also her dogs kind of look like show dogs. Also many vets actually don’t know how to deal with whippets there are some treatments (sorry my English isn’t good as well) that harm whippets and are not good for them, it often happened that some dogs died because of wrong treatments

@@lauraknickrehm7849 yeah i feel ya XD Espacially the part with the vets...like when we got our first whippet we went to one because she often made those really weird breathing sounds. The vet did a xray of her throat and said that there was a defect or something like that in her windpipe or what ever and that there was nothing against it. Years later when we got our second dog from a good breeder, she told us that it was actually a 'back ward sneeze' (that's what we call it here in austria) and that it was completly normal. Also i was more talking about the show dogs and not the racing dogs lol those dogs of her clearly are show dogs

Whippets can handle long walks and runs. Yes, they like to chill out, but they do appreciate time out exploring (apart from when it is raining, which they hate). I agree with the comment about cuts and bites. They do have thin skin, and you definitely will end up using your pet insurance, but in every other way a wonderful, loving dog that is so safe with children and is the perfect friend and companion.

We have a cat, our whippet likes the cat but she doesn't like him! So she avoids him or tries to swipe him if he gets near her. She was a rescue though. He would happily sit with her if he could but he will try and chase her sometimes. Depends on the cat if it wants to be social with the whippet it could be okay if not as long as cat has got some safe space it's fine. Ours jumps up on daughters high bed and she hides if she's worried and dog mostly downstairs and her up.

For heart murmurs, use hawthorn leaf, stem, flower and berry extract. It strengthens the muscle of the heart and stops the night coughing bringing up fluid. I had a super little whippy with a murmur from young, i gave him just 1 hawthorn extract tablet 500mg daily for life. No issues unless I'd run out and post took longer, and he did start to cough after a few days without, which proved that the hawthorn worked. Great for people with same issues. I won't have any other dog. They are utterly adorable and wonderful family members. Very noble dogs. I have 2 siblings this time. I agree with all that's said on this video.

The video recommends whippets to just about anyone, which doesn't feel quite right. They have the gentle, delicate side and separation anxiety, so they do need a safe and quiet spot (which isn't always a given in all households), and shouldn't be left alone for too long. So, for example, if you have loud, rambunctious toddlers or dogs, or if you live alone and go to work, there are better choices. They also need clothes when it gets cold, and more dental care than most breeds (brushing their teeth every one or two weeks for example). Which is no big deal, they're definitely easier dogs than most but every breed has their quirks and no dog is zero maintenance.

My whippet goes for walks at least one hour daily. I live in an apartment with no other dogs, so he really needs to get outside for stimulation and walks. I bet if your whippet has another dog in the household or a garden at home an half hour probably would be fine 😊

The ‘Kennel Club Accredited’ dog trainer doesn’t know what she’s talking about. My whippets are off the lead most of the time when we’re out walking. No need to rent a secure paddock!!

Pigs are dangerous and strong, a whippet could get badly injured in that situation. VERY irresponsible.

Saying that excercising your dog makes it have "too much muscle which constricts bone structure" is one of the most nonsense things I've ever heard in my whole life. Get her off this video she shouldn't be offering advice of any sort to anyone
