And now for something completely different...I do some home appliance repair - in this case, my dryer's thermal fuse blew because of a failed heater coil. How easy is it to replace? As easy as pie!
Here's the link to get the parts from Amazon: www.amazon.com.... I only show the thermal fuse replacement, but if that doesn't work, it might be worth replacing the other items, too.
As for my restoration of a 1966 Triumph Spitfire:

Mr. Fisher, thanks a million brother. I had already priced a new motor while the missus priced a new dryer. None of what I was seeing elsewhere showed the same issue I was having and then your video showed the exact symptom. Power (check), Lights (check), Start button --> Nothing. Bought the $6 part online. Took me about 30-40 mins. (My fuse was in a weird spot) and boom! Saved me a lot of money and made me feel like a repair god. Or demi-god next to you I suppose. Thanks again!

That's awesome! Glad it worked for you. Remember that the fuse is a safety device and that it may have blew for a reason outside of it just failing. Make sure your exhaust hose is relatively clean and not jammed full of lint balls, making it hard to exhaust the heat. Congrats!!

Wow, that's great! Glad to help. Make sure that your vent hose is clean and doesn't have any major kinks in it. Sometimes that will cause over-heating. The thermal fuse can sometimes just be the symptom, not the cause. Happy for you!!

Chris! Thank you so much for a clear, concise video on how to perform this task. I sure wish more KZfaq videographers could do the same....most can take something that would take 3 minutes and they make a 2 hour long video with 'Uhhhs, Duhhh's, every other sentence with crappy video and sound. Great job! Now all I have to do is to locate where I can purchase that fuse locally.
@roundtailrestoration

Thank you, I appreciate that. I was unable to source it locally without doing a special order, so that's why I went with Amazon. I knew it was going to not be the highest quality, but at least I could get it relatively quickly. Good luck!

@@roundtailrestoration As a follow-up, Chris, I could not locate the fuse locally. Although my machine looks a lot like yours, it does not have the access door on the front like yours. (My machine has the steamer function on it too). Anyway, I was able to find a repairman locally who could come over in just a matter of a few hours and he replaced the fuse with an OEM part. He didn't charge me an arm or a leg either (he is from Ukraine and is working very hard to establish his business and he does it by pricing his jobs very 'sanely') :-) I did watch him take the dryer apart just in case I ever need to get in there again, say for a belt replacement. The whole front comes off and you need to remove the drum to access that fuse. But again, thanks for a great video!

@@roundtailrestoration Chris! Yes, it took a little more than your video showed, but remember, my dryer is a different model than yours. Thanks Chris for sharing your knowledge. Saved me a few hundred dollars. The replacement thermal fuse I acquired from amazon for $5.00 and received it the next day through a prime membership with free delivery. My model Cabrio is newer than what you worked on so I obtained from Whirlpool a part schematic. From the schematic I could tell one of the fuses was on the blower which I saw was accessible from the front without having to remove the drum. The replacement was quick and after slapping everything back together she fired right up. My wife performed the final successful validation with some heavy loads. After many years of operations I'm not sure why the fuse popped. I will investigate further if I see that the thermal fuse pops another time.

That's awesome, Keith. I always felt that this dryer, specifically, put out a lot more lint than I was used to. Like, out the exhaust vent. Hi, Ellen. My next thing to check would be the door switch. If the dryer doesn't think the door is shut, it won't let it start. You might be able to short the switch and then try to start it. If it starts, that's it. If not, then I'm at a loss. I don't own the dryer anymore. Some others in the comments have had a similar problem that you are, so maybe if you go back into the comments something will help. Sorry, but good luck!

@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 7 ай бұрын
Thanks. If it still won't start, I'd look at the door switch. If the dryer doesn't think the door is shut, it won't allow it to start. Outside of that, I think you'd be looking at something more significant. There are other components down around that fuse that you can also get at Amazon (I think I put the link in there). Not very expensive and might be worth a shot. The computer board would be next and that would probably be $$$. I'd also recommend a website, www.repairclinic.com. They have a lot of good troubleshooting videos and might give you more ideas than I can. Good luck!

Could be the door switch. If the dryer doesn't see the door as closed, it won't let it start. Easy way to test this is to start recording a video on your phone and place the phone in the dryer. Then, close the door. Open the door back up and watch the video. If the light went out, the dryer should "see" the door closed as it's the same switch (which means that's not it). Don't start the dryer, of course! If it's not that, I'm sorry but I don't have any better ideas. You can try this website and it can provide more ideas and also has good videos (I use it often) www.repairclinic.com/

@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration Жыл бұрын
Hi Brenda. The thermal fuse may have blown again. The exhaust may be clogged with lint, which is causing the dryer to overheat. You can disconnect the exhaust hose and see if it's full of stuff. If not, then you may have another problem. If you know, or you know someone that knows, how to do an electrical resistance check, you can check the thermal fuse, with the dryer unplugged, and see what you get. Just connect the multimeter, set on resistance, across the two wires of the fuse. If it shows 0, it's good. If not, it's blown again and needs to be replaced. Good luck and let me know.

Did you have to replace the coil as well?
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 5 жыл бұрын
I did not. The coil worked properly. However, replacement didn't look like a tough job to do. The coil will normally fail by breaking (physically) which means it wouldn't heat up at all. If the computer was telling the coil to turn on, but never turn off, the excess heat would blow the fuse, preventing a fire. In that case, the fuse would be a symptom. But, so would the heating coil. Over time, I would expect the coil to eventually fail just due to heating up and cooling down, but I don't think this would normally happen within the life of a properly operating dryer. So, you may also need to replace the coil if you find it physically broken, but that, too, may be a symptom. Hope this helps. If you have a specific problem, I can try to help more.

Why would a dryer get too hot in order for this to need replacement? On mine i replaced the heater element and after a load it went off.
@roundtailrestoration

I think the biggest thing is that there is an obstruction or a lot of line in the exhaust line, preventing adequate air flow out of the dryer. The heat "backs up" and it cooks the fuse.

If it got that hot to trip the fuse, you might have damaged the heating coil. You can take that bottom front cover off and look at the heater, which is toward the back on the right. When you are running the dryer (don't stick you hands inside when the cover is off and it's plugged in!), you should see the heater glowing red. If not, that may have failed (it's just a coil of wire and it may have broke). Outside of that, I'm not sure.

Here's a KZfaq one I found that might help you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g56Pp5yZrc6dops.html&ab_channel=CletusCarroll. Outside of maybe being able to get to everything, I don't think it looks like too bad of a repair. Good luck!

I'm not a trained technician. But, I would ensure that the dryer is not dirty with lint and that the exhaust trunk is clear and unobstructed so it can easily exhaust the hot air. If that's all good, I would try to dry something in timed mode vice one of the automatic cycles. That could rule out a bad computer controller keeping the heating element on all the time. Otherwise, maybe try smaller loads, but that's not a great option.

The door switch may have failed. If the dryer doesn't see the door as shut, it won't let it start. There are a few other components in the dryer near where that fuse is and some of those could be broken, but you should be able to test those. I'd lean towards the door switch. Outside of that, I'm not sure. I'd recommend a website, www.repairclinic.com/. They have a lot of good videos and troubleshooting help.

No, the thermal fuse is a protective device that will open when the unit gets too hot to prevent fires. It could be another thermostat, but it may be your heater coil also. If you turn the machine on with the bottom panel open, you can see the heating coil glow (red hot). They do wear and break over time. I'd try it with the machine on a manual mode, not an auto mode to help eliminate some computer glitch possibly causing the problem. Good luck!

I did not replace the heating element, but I did remove it to test it and you DO NOT need to pull the drum. The heating element is on the bottom, right hand side, towards the back, maybe 6" or so off the bottom of the dryer itself. It's hard to see (use a flashlight), but it'll look like a bunch of coils of wire. If you look at the video at this point (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npyVqcuK1ci4iqc.html) it's the metal "stand" that's in the lower right. You'll probably skin a few knuckles, but you can get it out. Hi Travis. That doesn't sound right to me that the thermistor would prevent the dryer from running at all. It would seem to be more for regulating the temperature. That being said, it may be wired that way as a safety device, so that if it does fail in the way to leave the heater on continually, it just won't let the dryer work. Of course, that what the thermal fuse is for, but maybe it's a double-safety circuit. Sorry I cannot give you a definitive answer. Good luck!

Hi, Julio. There are a few more basic components (that are what you see the other wires going to down there where you replaced the thermal fuse), very similar procedure to replace and similar in cost. Another thing to try (you'll have to replace the fuse again) is to run the dryer in a different model. In other words, if you are doing auto dry, try the timed dry. If the dryer won't even start...no power at all even though it's plugged in...then the thermal fuse is blown. If the dryer starts up and spins, it's not the thermal fuse. That's not the thermal fuse, then. Are you doing an automatic cycle or a timed cycle? I don't have the dryer anymore so I can't check it. You can pull the bottom cover off and watch what happens when it heats up...if the coil only partially glows red, then it's probably broken.
