Been hoping you'd get back to checking out some more Gacharic Spin! Thanks again for another great breakdown! To add to your point about the secret of live performances, another thing that gets done by many bands in post-processing of live footage nowadays is tidying up the drums; snares, kicks and toms are often re-sampled and quantised. Also guitars get re-amped, vocals get pitch corrected, etc. I'm not keen on such practices myself. I understand it, for the reasons you stated, but I may be in the minority but I'll value honesty and genuine human moments, that yes can include imperfections, over what I consider to be fake representations of performances. Gacharic Spin however are always very honest with their live footage, which I really love. Especially as a band who are known for being such excellent musicians you might well imagine them getting nervous about ever showing any imperfections. That they are happy to put out raw audio and it's at the same quality as bands who've done a lot of cleaning up after the fact speaks volumes about their skills. For example, Gacharic Spin haven't been shy about including performances on DVD's that aren't perfect. On their Sekira Liar tour DVD they include in the DVD the beginning of the track "Boku Dake no Cinderella" where Hana had been handed a completely out-of-tune guitar by the roadie (this was when she was still mostly a drummer so didn't have a full guitar set-up on stage, she just came out from behind the drums and had a guitar handed to her) so the beginning sounds absolutely catastrophic when she comes in and the DVD includes close up of her reaction face to realising her guitar is out of tune and trying to tune it up as the song carrys on. When the rest of the band realises they stop the song, a roadie runs on to take the guitar off to tune it up whilst the band has a laugh and banters about it, the guitar gets returned, and they start the song over and nail it perfectly. It'd have been so easy to cut all that out of the DVD but they included it. As another example in their 10th Anniversary Blu-Ray whilst singing "Takaramono" - a song of gratitude to the fans for the wonderful moments performing music creates together, Hana was getting seriously emotional whilst singing it and is all over the place pitch wise because her voice is cracking really bad. They included it as is, perhaps if analysed in a vacuum it was not a good vocal performance, but it was a genuine, heartfelt and beautiful moment. For their 7th Anniversary DVD both Hana and Oreo who were main vocalists at the time had cold's so they aren't as perfect as they normally are, but they still put in passionate and powerful performances, even battling through illness. The only time I recall them cutting stuff from DVD's due to issues was for a single song at their 8th Anniversary show where Oreo who sings lead on it was having major mic issues, to the point she had to abandon her keyboard and malfunctioning mic halfway through the song and go to one of the other mics on the stage to finish the song. I remember being so impressed at how well they handled such a major technical issue when I was sat in the audience and wondering if they would include it in the DVD they had said they were filming that night. They didn't which I understand because the vocal audio from the first half was ruined, but I kind of would have loved them to have included it anyway because I thought it was such a great moment you could show others of how to deal with technical issues in a live performance and keep going without getting flustered. One final point, the audience are subdued in this clip, but that's because we had to be! There have been strict rules about how people can behave at concerts to allow them to be started up post-pandemic, no shouting or singing, keeping distance, etc. It is finally being relaxed now fortunately! Thank you again and sorry to have written so much!

You probably know more and can talk more about it, but they have clips of Oreo face planting in one of their earlier shows, which they put in multiple angles on that video. I believe that came from a DVD as well from what I have read, but I don't know for sure since I don't own that one myself. I love reading or seeing stuff like that because it makes it more genuine to me. It's a bold move to put multiple replays of one of the members face planting on stage on a DVD. I typically prefer having a mix that is closer to what was actually played. Although those very polished and pimped up concert blu-rays/DVD's can also sound really good. A good example are Band-Maid's blu-rays/DVD's. I love those concerts and I love Band-Maid, but there is no way those aren't touched up. They almost sound like they are recorded in a studio (although the mix is usually somewhat off). That being said, it goes both ways I own a couple of blu-rays/DVD's that I bought as a first listen to some bands to give them an honest first shake and some of those performances sound really out of tune as far as guitars and/or vocals go. One of them is like that almost through the whole concert. It was so bad to the point that I have a tough time giving them a second chance. So while I appreciate them being honest in putting the actual show on that disc, but it does hurt me wanting to listen to more by them. I decided not to mention the bands by name, I don't have enough of experience with them to say anything about them in general but it did actually made me not buy some of their stuff. One of them is a really low cost recording from a relatively new band, I might give them an other shot because they just didn't have the money to produce a better DVD and it might actually be the sound-quality which makes it sound worse. They will release a new DVD soon, but I am probably going to wait for their album or something. The other one is from a rather well known female Japanese band, which did lose their vocalist just before the concert and they had a guest vocalist on that specific concert. I know it's probably not the best place to start with, but it's what I could get in blu-ray form. I am more disappointed with the guitars on that one than I am with the vocalist actually. Edit: So it's a tough balancing act. I can see pro's and con's to both approaches. I used to be against any touch ups whatsoever but I changed my mind on it and I do think it can work well. I still love rawness in recordings though. There are plenty of recordings that I like a lot which have very obvious mistakes in them. I have listened to a lot of early black metal and some earlier punk and they usually didn't care about stuff like that. I enjoy that rawness in those albums or demos. The mistakes give it a different atmosphere to me and I like that in some genres. In others, not so much.

@@MaartenT Yes the clip where Oreo faceplants is from their 2013 "Delicious" DVD. Ultimately it's always going to be down to the bands discrection, and I do get it if they decide to do clean up, it's a product and as PrymalChaos points out in this video, sometimes you might feel you want to create a bigger sound than the raw audio not being pumped through a PA gives you. That's fair enough, but there's always something about it that rubs me a little the wrong-way. It's kind of the same as how I don't like "fake" guitar play-through videos that are all over KZfaq where people film themselves "playing" along with a track they recorded in about 500 takes. I think ultimately it's because it feels like it's giving people misconceptions about either the skills of the band/musician involved and giving aspiring musicians unrealistic expectations. Regarding if a DVD is not great quality, I can respect a band putting it out un-edited, although ultimately they must decide if the footage is actually good enough, if there are major issues throughout in one area is there at least something to compensate for it? Fantastic energy? Another instrument or something shining really well? A decision must be made if the footage is actually worth releasing as a product.

Yep - postprocessed live performances - authenticity, rawness and leaving mistakes in vs. better sound quality and mistake free experience. The audience was pretty tame in this one because of covid-protocol (no singing, no jumping, dancing etc). Usually GS-crowds try to match the energy of the band. Thx for your analytical review of this performance. Well done and cheers :)

Yes the audience appear to be somewhat subdued & may have been prohibited from being a little more proactive due to Covid protocols over there but I still felt that the band was fully committed & musically on point.

Really liked your analysis of live videos at the end. Gacharic Spin's do seem to do next to zero post-processing, which is laudable. In that case though, including more venue sound (including crowd noise when crowds are allowed to make noise) in the mix would be good. Anyway I find myself always coming back to them even though a lot of what they do is not "my kind of music". I don't especially like funk and I definitely don't like dance, but somehow their energy, creativity, and musicianship overcomes all of that.

@@michaelthain4488 "Logically they should not appeal to my taste, but I love them." Funny you should say that. I've had that thought before. So different from other metal and punk bands I love and yet GS just hits the spot. Or different spots, depending on which lineup / generation. They're just unique and special.

I once randomly met Kevin Dubrow, formerly of Quiet Riot, and talked with him for a few minutes. He said that the reason why Quiet Riot hadn't released a live album at that point was because so many live albums were re-recorded and he didn't want to do that as he felt it was, in his words, "total bullshit."

Presently, japanese crowds aren't allowed to sing or scream! They only can applause. That's why you have that wrong feeling of a "very tame" audience.

Good analysis. This line-up of GS has definitely been using less backing tracks and doing far less post-production on their live recordings. While it does give a more honest representation, showing their true abilities, it can come at a cost of sucking some of the energy out of the performance. There's the double whammy here because the audience were restricted too. There was quite a quick turnaround between recording and releasing this live version, which may also play a part. As listeners we can compensate a bit by cranking the volume, although I don't have a full venue PA to play with. You'll find the jazz influence lurking in a lot of Japanese music, so if that's your bag you'll find a lot to enjoy.
