FPV cameras. TVL vs pixels. What does it all mean?

When you look at a spec for an FPV camera it'll usually include something about TVL or TV lines, how large and how many mega pixels the sensor is and lots of other info. I think most of us know about sensor resolution and how many mega pixels a sensor is, but how does that relate to TV lines. The larger the TVL number the better, but what does it all mean.
In the good old CRT television days, video engineers devised a simple way to measure the horizontal quality of a camera with the standard EIA-1956 resolution chart like this.
TVL is defined as the maximum number of alternating light and dark vertical lines that can be resolved per picture height. So a resolution of 800 TVL means that 400 distinct dark vertical lines and 400 distinct white vertical lines can be counted over a horizontal span equal to the height of the picture. If we're using a 4:3 aspect ratio say 4cm by 3cm, 800 TVL means 400 vertical dark lines can be counted over 3cm width on monitor.
The inherent quality of camera will be affected by the optics, the sensor and to some extent the electronics and any software that processes the signal.
Basically the bigger the TVL number the better quality.

This begins to answer the question but I am curious about the rest of the puzzle. This is what the camera does. How does that factor when we consider the VTX for example. Do VTX units have a VTL limit? So for example, if a camera has 1000 TVL is it possible that the VTX only transmits 700 VTL anyway. I just read somewhere else that DVRs only record up to 700TVL anyway. So does that mean that if the VTX transmits the lines I will see them but record less? Would love an extended video on this.

Great explanation, but why can't we measure this? It'd be great if you could devise and show a testing method, as you said on another video! I'll subscribe and hope for the best! Cheers.

Thanks. measuring TVL with any sort of accuracy requires time, money and specialist equipment. It's not really a DIY thing. You could do it yourself but it'd be way off.

@@WhirlyBloke Considering we have access to 4K+ screens now days, surely someone could make a setup to test this, it'd sure be good for FPV world!

@@WhirlyBloke Bro, I don't even have a camera to make a video yet! I mean it's on the list, people often say I am entertaining, they like my voice or whatever, but I feel I'd need to have something content wise that was not just a copy of what others are doing. I only recently got into RC Aircraft, only took me 25 years to finally make something that actually flys, I turned an EPP Foam glider into an RC plane, probably should have had a camera on that project, took about 3 months from start to finish, waiting for parts, finding time to work on it...
