It always catches me off guard how folk songs have such wildly different lyrics depending on the singers. Listening to this after years of the Irish Rovers version was like stepping into an alternate reality. One might say it was rather... *jaring*. Jokes aside, this was an absolute banger! Thanks for making my day better.

It's interesting to know about the other lyrics! I looked them up and I see what you mean. I do like the other lyrics a bit better. Is that mostly because I choose to interpret in the original lyrics that the singer decided to go date his buddy who was in the army instead because he knows he'll be a better boyfriend than Jenny was a girlfriend? Yes. Yes it is. Do I 100% want that version now? Yes. Yes I do.

The Metallica version was a cover of Thin Lizzy’s, which was a cover of an old Irish drinking song.

A cover of one of my favorite Metallica songs, which is a cover of one of my favorite Thin Lizzy songs, which is a cover of a Dubliners song, who themselves adapted an old Irish folk song. The music video for the Metallica version is burned into my mind as one of the most late 90s things ever and you guys did the song justice! Makes me wanna hear you and Jonathan do way more Metallica and Metallica style stuff.

One of my all-time favorites from Metallica; always loved their version. It does make it hard to eat lunch though, as singing along is not conducive with having food in your mouth.

@@empersian1234 it is a traditional irish song, there is no "original" recording, the one by The Dubliners was one of the first and most famous version. I love metal by the way but Metallica fucking destroyed the lyrics XD traditional lyrics tells a better story

@@Lynnya76 While it's true that this is an old, Irish folk song that was made famous in the 1970's as a rendition performed by Thin Lizzy, this is most assuredly based on the cover of that song released by Metallica in 1998 as part of their Garage Inc. covers album. If you get a chance, I would recommend checking it out as it is quite different from the Thin Lizzy version (both are great in their own right, in my opinion!) which itself was very different from the original folk number! 😊✌

It's definitely different having Traditional music of my people being done in Metal. But what makes this good is the careful pronunciation of every word, every Irish band I have heard doing this, they slur the words so badly I learned the words wrong and couldn't make out an entire verse for about 10 years. Well done Caleb and Jonathan, annunciation is so important.

@@cobaltblu4196 there are several versions of Whiskey in the Jar. Like all folk songs that predate recorded music words have changed through hundreds of years, there are about 20 different sets of Lyrics for it. Maybe more.
