I finally did it. I bought one of the fabled Whisper Rooms!
So, how do I like it? Check it out :)
The first section is where I discuss the booth and show how well it isolates. The second section is a sped up video of most of the booth set up process.
The set up took about 6 hours including transporting it in my truck to my space.
My lovely girlfriend helped me load it up and I hired a professional furniture assembly guy on taskrabbit.
Once we got in a groove it installed quickly.
It reduces noise by about 30-33dB inside which is incredible for voice and prop recordings.
Last weekend I recorded a small sound library with Daniy Oberly and Emily Meo and the booth was perfect for it. It doesn't feel cramped, gives enough space to perform, and sounds very nice without corrective eq.
Of course, initially I wasn't happy with the sound. It was quite boxy and boomy.
The room modes around 80, 115, 138, 160, and 230-700 required lots of panels and treatment. After loading up on 4" bass traps in the corners, 3" panels and 2" panels for the low mids and high end, and acoustic blankets wrapped in the edges and corners it is way more neutral.
The sweet spot is around the center or just behind the center in the 1/3rd of the back.
I've now added custom bass traps which make it quite neutral inside.
Overall I'm a very happy customer. It does exactly what I needed. It is my room within a room and my Mosaic space can now handle any work I want to do.
Note some things sound a bit odd in the video, but only when the iPhone camera is wayyyyy up in the corners and edges to get me in the shot. In the middle section of the booth it is very neutral.
If you want to hear tests and recordings with the Slate microphones I'll put some together when I get the time :) Let me know.
Hit me up in the comments with any questions!

Hey Aaron, this is fantastic! But do you know if those type of booths would work for street noise, like birds, cars, dogs, kids etc..?
@aaronbrownsound
@aaronbrownsound 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rebeca, Hard to say for sure as it depends on levels and frequency content. The booth does best above with higher frequencies while super loud trucks or traffic rumble will still come through. To get rid of street noise you need a room within a room, or a double wall. However, mine has reduced noise enough and I'm far enough away from people that it works for quiet sounds. If a neighbor at Mosaic is playing a drum kit or using a subwoofer it still comes through and I have to ask them to stop or turn it down. Hope that's helpful :)

Aaron that's awesome. Do you think the Whisper Room would work against footsteps from the upstairs neighbor?
@aaronbrownsound
@aaronbrownsound 4 жыл бұрын
So far as I can tell I think it would. The things it doesn't help with are in the lower frequencies like subs and kick drums. It won't eliminate, but will definitely reduce a large amount. If I had an upstairs at this facility I could tell you for sure. A friend has a double wall version and it's even more effective.

And dont' know why nobody does a test with loud music from INSIDE the booth and see how much of it is minimized outside of it. So many people want to use it for singing when there are others at home and you don't want them to listen.
@aaronbrownsound

Thought about it, but moving the speakers in there to test that was a hassle at the time. Really, the isolation of it works about the same both out-in and in-out. For voice it's likely the same as the numbers in the video and for things with lots of low end that's trickier.

This is what I’m wondering too. I’m a singer, and can’t really do what I want with thin apartment walls and neighbors all around me. Considering a vocal booth but don’t know if it’s worth it.

So proper acoustic treatment was the answer to the boxy esa of the booth ?
@aaronbrownsound
@aaronbrownsound 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Since then I added bass traps in the corners and i'ts night and day. Any room this small will require a fair amount of treatment to reduce the room modes as much as possible. It's tough in tight spaces, but this bigger booth allowed me to do so and still feel roomy inside!

Hey! Awesome! Do you have the enhanced double wall whisper room!? I’m debating between the two
@aaronbrownsound

I've got the single wall. A friend has the double wall and it's even more isolating. Worth the extra cost in noisy environments.

Aaron Brown awesome thank you for the reply! My biggest concern with investing in a whisper room is to save the time of having to stop for external noise that randomly occurs! How well does the single wall keep out noise from the next room?
@aaronbrownsound
@aaronbrownsound 4 жыл бұрын
@@MeganMeyer The main thing that gets in are bass frequencies. If a neighbor is playing a subwoofer or kick drum this won't get it out. However, for moderate sounds it does well as shown in the video.

THANK YOU. I've had to sit through so many of these videos and not a single bloody person actually demonstrated how effective these really were at shutting out noise. Thank you so much for the demonstration.

I went to try one in a pawnshop. The same model. When we put a speaker at low/moderate volume, the soundproofing was awful. Super disappointed. They are asking 5000 $ Cad... They said some screws were missing... but yeah...I dont know if its because they built it wrong but the speaker was super audible from outside or inside the booth ...
@aaronbrownsound

Huh, interesting. Most acoustic booths are only as good as the weakest link. If there was a gap, such as screws, rubber plugs, etc. then it would cause air flow and noise to come right through :)

can you try to record a video with a track with more bass preferably a trap song.

I tested it with "Around the World" By Daft Punk for the vid, but I couldn't share it as the copyright violation wouldn't allow usage. The results were the same. However, I don't have a sub an only the KH 120 so I can't test sub frequencies. I imagine it won't be as effective under 50 Hz. and would need a double wall air gap to help in that case.

Hey Aaron I know this video is a bit old by now, but do you think the single wall version isolates enough to not disturb the neighbors at night? Unfortunately I can only sing/record late at night and live in an apartment. Was hoping the single wall version would be enough for me to record at night.
@aaronbrownsound
@aaronbrownsound 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jack, I don't own it anymore but I can give some ideas. It depends on a few things. For singing it actually might be enough. The single wall does well seemingly above 150 Hz. which covers most of the human voice range. It was very quiet on the outside. Especially if you don't have neighbors below on a shared floor. Double wall gets much more isolation and extended frequencies so it would be a big win. Of course it's much more $$$ so I can't give a perfect answer for ya. I'd imagine a single wall would do it just for human voice unless you are an opera singer or your neighbors are particularly sensitive.

How hot does the booth get over time when you’re in there?
@aaronbrownsound
@aaronbrownsound 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have it anymore as I closed down my room at Mosaic a few years ago. However, with fans on and a cool space it was fine for 15-30 minutes. I didn't stay in there longer so I can't say for sure. I will say the fans added noise so I mostly ended up leaving them off even after adding additional baffling to reduce the tonal resonance they added. Even with fans off, if the room is cool enough and you come in and out of the booth every 10-15 minutes to cycle in air it stayed cool. Especially with just one led row of lights at the top and no laptops/computers in there. I used an iPad for a screen which doesn't generate much heat :)
