A user's opinion on the Whistler TRX-2. Honest views on what is, after all, an expensive receiver, detailing some of the features and differences between this and other similar products - the overall conclusion is that it's good, but NOT one for beginners. The video helps to explain why. It's quite long, and even at this length skims through some of the less useful features, concentrating on initial programming and the capture of frequency data from the net.
There is no comment on the decoding of the digital formats, as with the exception of one format - the FDMA used by brands such as Kirisun and Anysecu, decoding is painless and simple. NXDN, DMR and the others are decoded easily and painlessly. As yet, I have not been able to decode the standard dPMR format. If people request it, another video on the decoding possibilities could be produced - but this area seems already well covered.

I have this scanner. It is indeed difficult to program manually. That's why I use software to program this and every other radio I own. Whistler's software works quite well, in fact. With a frequency reference website and Whistler's programming software, someone with this radio can be up and running in 30 minutes.

People need to get a clue. The Whistler TRX-2 is a fine scanner which has a learning curve just like any new piece of equipment. Patience and research is required to get the most out of this scanner. Don't judge this scanner on one person's biased opinions as most problems people have with scanners are self inflicted.

The good news is now 1n 2023 when the scanner is shipped it is programed with the scan bands for the country of destination all the USA channels have been removed. i live in new zealand and when i got mine all the bands were already in the unit ready to go. all i have to do is add the frequencies that are not in the data bank example new frequency's that are released that have just come out, when in my car i just connect my scanner to A second battery in my car that is not the one that starts the car my 2nd battery is in the boot.THEN I DON'T HAVE TO KEEP SETTING THE TIME AND THE UNIT STAYS CHARGED UP.

And the plans given are of little use here in the US as well with the migration to the higher or encrypted bands as well justvtaking up space!

I was on the verge of buying this unit until I saw this post, why are so many receivers poor when it comes to the user interface? Answer they are not tested by end users...

Great info for both beginner users and experienced alike. I currently own several P25 scanners and need a P25 phase II scanner that can do NXDN and the TRX-2 seems to be it. Being able to remote-mount the control head (display) is another plus for me. Only thing I don't like is the fact Whistler refuses to share the coding of this model so third-party program/control software can be written for it as you can with all other scanner models out there.

Bill Palmer - thanks Bill. I'm still not at impressed, and only discovered recently that the function codes are critical to programming quickly, but the absolute worst feature that ruins the receiver for me is the start up time. Use the starter motor and it restarts every time. Worse, it doesn't automatically start, you need to press the button. It also is sadly, dangerous to use when driving, you need to read the display and while driving, operating the menu system is just dangerous. I'm of the generation where I've always felt I can use a radio while driving safely, but not this one. It's a very good receiver, but I hate the operating system. In over forty years of being a ham, it's the worst designed radio I have ever had. Even the membrane keypad on the ancient AOR 2001 scanner was pleasant to use by comparison.

Thanks - appreciated. I must admit that now I've ben using it a lot - I've not really changed my views. It's a great radio, but the start up time, and the time it takes to enter details is not that good. Let's say you have found lots of frequencies, via a search. when you suddenly realise who it is, and push the pause button to stop the scan, entering the alpha tags to enter the name is done in silence - and while you are doing it, you don't hear anything until you are done and restart the scan. It's sensitive and quite nice, just rather slow - and still the auto search picks up digital signals and doesn't try to decode them, just lets you hear the annoying digital buzz. Start up time is very long before action happens. Perhaps it just does too much!

POSTSCRIPT TO THE VIDEO - It spends it's time indoors now. It's just put in the vehicle of I have a specific need. Reasons are simple - the start up time just makes me cross! The starter motor resets it every time, and while it's fine scanning through the memories, it is horrible for searching - you need to read the display and while driving, it's just too tough to do safely. It also seems quite picky on DMR systems, and worse on NXDN. It often doesn't even stop on my own NXDN business system. Sometimes it stops the scan and I hear audio, but too many times it ignores them. I only realised I have had it a year now, and in that year it's been very rarely used, so I cannot say it's value for money - sorry.

Paul - just get an Electric Car , ZERO maitanance and ZERO OIL & GAS forever, and you might change Brakes once in a Decade. as EV use Regen to brake. EV have no Starter motor and Multiple USB are standard. Regarding the Scanner - you may have your NXDN programmed incorrectly or it has not been updated to your Current Trunking configuration. you can also dump the Stock antenna , as its Garbage , and connect a proper Mobile Antenna. WH Trx-2 may benefit with a DSP, Firmware and Software Update and a DB update cant hurt Either.

Moonraker provide a UK bandplan SD card, presumably this review doesn't have that as it keeps talking about the US bandplans?

Indeed, my radio doesn't have a UK card - I still use the thing, but really don't like it. I'll see if I can get the UK card and see if it improves the experience, but somehow, I'm doubtful.

I am new to the hobby and have a UBC3500xlt and a BCT15x reason for choosing these is I can program from my computer. Would you stick with these or I was thinking of investing in a digital base scanner so able to listen to shopwatch ETC could you recommend a analogy/digital base scanner also could you recommend software using freescan at the moment. Appreciate your time to answer the question's above. Thank you for your time.

JUST REMEMBER WHEN YOU BUY THE UNIDEN SDS200 YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA TO UNIDEN TO UNLOCK AND USE THE DIGITAL SCANNING AS THE DIGITAL CODEX IS NOT IN THE SCANNER BY DEFAULT ITS AN EXTRA ONE OFF COST IT COSTS 100 US DOLLARS TO ACTIVATE THE DIGITAL FEATURES OTHERWISE ITS JUST BECOME AN ANALOG SCANNER. THE WISTER HAS THE DIGITAL CODES ALL READY ACTIVATED TO USE.

No - very sorry, but I've never had one of these to try. For the money, it's a bit expensive so it should be good - but the whistler is expensive too, and sadly, I don't think it's very good value for the money.

I know About 436 HP scanner, it has a Cheap Radio Board , that has missing gaps in Coverage, I'm not Speaking about Cellular, my ICOM R30 can SCAN HF Utility at 100 khz all the way to 3400 MHz, ZERO gaps in Coverage , except for Celluar lockout. 436 HP is an old fashioned scanner with an Inability to monitor CW, AM Broadcast and SSB as well as the HAM Digital Modes , and cant even Receive TETRA. 436 HP lacks Bluetooth audio for Headphones and any Built in GPS Support, My ICOM R30 has GPS and I can SCAN the Towers nearest to me, based on Location. and Bluetooth audio is a godsend for my Ears, with superior Audio.

Scanners today are made Cheaply and are Expensive. they are Fundimentaly missing Basic Analog modes such as AM Broadcast, CW, and SSB, as well as All of the HAM Voice Modes. they are Missing TETRA modulation and HAM Digital Modes. the Scanners today use Cheap Receiver boards that have Missing gaps in Coverage, A ICOM R30 has Continious coverage from 100 khz to 3400 mhz. (cell blocked). Scanners need to have Continous coverage. and All Band All Mode operation. Scanners today are Decades behind in RF technology. Modern Electronics today use Bluetooth, Built in GPS and USB 3.0 . Scanners need to Adopt this and much more. Scanners only have Basic monochrome Screens, you can Source Full Color LCD Screens with 720p Resolution. Scanners have poor Audio, they Lack Powerful Amplified Speakers with Noise Reduction and Weatherproffing. I propose Converting Android Mobile technology to create a Scanner that has Mobile APP Technology, Built in GPS , Bluetooth Audio, USB 3.0 power and Data transfer.

I'm not really sure some of these comments are valid. Is this not like complaining that your brand new 6,000 4x4 cannot do 0-60 in 6 seconds, when some can, or not having an all singing, all dancing entertainment system when you picked the base model? If you want a comms receiver that can tuns CW, SSB and all the Digital modes, they are available just not on all. UK models do not have the missing cellular chunk, as we've never had that as a legislatory requirement. Of course some scanners are cheap, and some expensive. You mention the Icom r30 and then say that scanners need all band all mode coverage. Would people we willing to pay R30 price? Of course not. Scanners - from the point of view that they search memories already found are very different from searchers, looking for new frequencies. This works fine in channelised bands, but plenty of people, let alone machines have real trouble tuning SSB - is there even a point in using a scanner on HF bands where the broadcast stations stay fixed in frequency, but the comms signal traffic tends to move all the time? I don't quite see the decades behind in RF technology either. Nothing much changed until SDR appeared, and this system is now spreading into transceivers now many of the gremlins have been removed. Who cares if a screen is monochrome? Things will change when the old technology becomes more expensive than the new - that's prevalent in everything, but frankly scanning as a hobby is dying on it's feet as things go encrypted. SDR enables quick and simple changes to be made. Hardware doesn't. Of course firmware can be upgraded but need one new chip or filter and you are stuffed!

@@pauljohnson4590 - I still have my AOR 1000 scanner, it can do AM, FM, CW, it can scan Continious from 30 to 1300 MHz , with no gaps and I paid $999 for it. Worth every Penny. Love my NEW Icom R30 DC to Daylight Scanner. does HF and SSB quite competently . and is also a Digital Scanner with Continious coverage. it was $699 and Worth every penny. I would have bought the AOR DV10, but we both know what a mess that Scanner is, Despite its Impressive Specs are. I am Hoping both Uniden and Whistler stop making just Average Scanners , they are Charging Premium Prices for their TOP TIER scanners but they use Cheap Receivers. Both Uniden and Whistler need to add Continious Coverage and All Band All Mode Capability. as well as Bluetooth for Audio and Built in GPS Standard. both AOR and ICOM have GPS. the Uniden uses 1990's GPS Technology.

@@pauljohnson4590 - AOR made a SSB capable Scanner the AOR 1500 , but it was too Expensive , however it was One if the FIRST Scanners to have Coverage to 2060 MHz in 1990, Pretty advanced for the times. AOR and ICOM scanners with SSB had a Separate TUNING Dial and a Manual RF gain as well. both Scanners had SSB/AM filters to improve the Audio. Whistler and Uniden would be Wise to add SSB and Manual Tuning and RF gain to Scanners.

Instead , it has the Complete USA and Canada database and a 4 Direction control Pad. along with the Customary, Power, Menu, skip, select buttons. I also have the Flagship TRX-1 which has the Full Keypad.
