Whitburn Coastal Park
Whitburn Coastal Park is situated towards the southern end of the property, nicely sandwiched between Souter Lighthouse and Whitburn Point Local Nature Reserve.
The Coastal Park stands on the once heavily industrialised site of the former Whitburn Colliery where rock & pit spoil dominated; previous to National Trust management the area resembled that of a mucky moonscape rather than the beautiful patchwork of wooded mounds and rough grassland that you see today.
The area is rich in wildlife and boasts some fantastic colourful meadows which are home to many species of wild flower including some spectacular orchids.
The coastal park is also a recognised ‘hot spot’ during spring & autumn for migratory birds. Under licence from The B.T.O. Whitburn Bird Ringing Group monitor and record these movements - an average of 1500 birds, representative of over 70 different species are ringed annually.
