I'm a carp angler in Ohio. Great video! I never knew so much about the history of grass carp. I've been captivated by them for years. Such a hard fish to catch. They're massive gentle giants. But once you hook into them, you'll think you're fighting a northern pike.

Two boxes of Panko (bread crumbs), one box of strawberry jello, one can of cream style corn. That pack bait with a corn pop on the hook is like candy to them. I've got a local park close by where I go catch them now and then. They're a load of fun to catch! All of them there run around 20 to 25 lbs, but that was last year. Need to go see how big they are now! Very fun fish to catch! Hope the state gets a little more aggressive with stocking them in more of our lakes. One of my favorites is a large reservoir that's becoming a nasty mess with hair algae and weeds and it's ruining the lake and fishing. Shame.

I have two ponds each 1 1/2 acres and 17-25 feet deep. I have stocked them both with recommendations from Mr. Fender. I put 6 Amurs in each pond two years ago and I have 85% clear shorelines. The Amurs even eat cattails! I highly recommend Steve's book.

Thanks again. Keep the videos coming!! The way you present the info is very clear and understandable , also the scope of your topics are great and cover many of the different aspects of pond management. I am currently studying fisheries management in school at Oregon State University in my 4th year and beginning to start up a pond management company of my own. I try to soak up as much as I can wherever I can and love watching a pro! Thanks again for your insights !

I was sitting on a weed bed on a lake in Mid Michigan watching some good sized buffalo swimming around. Out of nowhere, I saw a 100+lb grass carp swimming behind a few big buffalo, it looked like a tarpon. I had no Idea they could handle the cold and have no Idea how it got there.

@joshalger6059 it wasn't a grass carp. But a Black Carp, they made their way into lakes in the bait trade. Black carp get much larger than grass carp.

Watching this great informational video made me start thinking about euthrophication in a pond and a question. With amurs clearing the vegetation, the natural trophic cascade of the pond will be altered (mostly for the good), but what are your thoughts on the subject of phytoplankton levels ? Some will say too much invites a possible cyanobacteria invasion and levels should be kept lower (greater than 18-24 inches). My thought leans towards the more phyto, the more zoo, the healthier baitfish.

i have seen in some ponds and lakes when the grass carp get the solid vegetation under control the algae planktonic blooms can take over . using aeration and beneficial bacteria will bring the nurturant levels back under control and reverse the cycle .

@@fendersfishhatchery560 What is your opinion about using silver carp for that(plankton)? In Serbia it is common thing (they don't reproduce in our lakes). And what about the amount of feces that grass carp produce ? We ( lake in north Serbia (close to Hungary) had big problem with grass (due to washing of KN fertilizers from near fields and overpopulation of silver carp ( they had grew over 50kg)) so we put grass carps. Now (after 4 years) there is no grass. But now there is no pike either. It moved to channels where they can find some grass to hide in it.... Last year we took out about 15 tons of silver carp an normalized the plankton level.And we have plan to dig channels for rain water to prevent it from going directly to lake , but through ground as filter. I hope that that will work....

I've heard that grass carp do not eat vegetation as well or not at all after you start feeding them is this true. Also, what is the best time of year for stocking.
@fendersfishhatchery560
@fendersfishhatchery560 3 жыл бұрын
that would depend on how much you feed them. its not likely you will feed enough commercial feed to slow down the vegetation consumption , they grow to very large sizes ,50 lbs plus so they need a lot to eat . how affective they are depends also on the number of fish per acre stocked

Sarah , i would like a picture of the blood root . grass carp will eat cattails but it will take a few years till they are big enough to work . you may be better off to remove some of them mechanically and once the grass carp are big enough they can take care of the rest. you didn't mention what state you are in so if you are not in Ohio check your laws to see if the carp are legal in your area

Im from Latvia I hate that our lakes are 30% full with weeds and nobody cares... and - from amurs that they don’t reproduce.... - is cause 2-3 years people fish them out and yeah money spend in nothing.... that’s why would be so nice that they could reproduce.... it’s like my 15 year old dream.... cause it’s impossible to put amur in every single lake every 3rd year.... just to expensive....

They are in invasive species when they reproduce. A few people catch your reproducing carp and throw them into your other waterways, you may have decimated your countries' water environment for who knows how long.
