White Bread isn't weird - neither is Lasagne., but finding either one in a can is certainly unusual.

About 30 years ago my father had canned bread in the Swiss army, it was called Atom bread that was conserved using ethanol. In theory you should let the ethanol evaporate first, long story short: They didn't and got a bit drunk.

@@jwalster9412 I suspect the % of the alcohol wasn't enough to use it like that. I'd argue 30-40% should suffice for preservation. 60-70% water is a bit much to use as a fuel additive sadly. :(

I actually think I might get some stuff off this store for my depressive episodes. I normally cook fresh, but during depression I can barely function, and not eating filling, hot meals can just make that worse. So stuff I can store for a long time and pull out when the dysfunction hits hard? That sounds like it might really help me.

I keep ramen in the cupboard along with frozen spinach usually and I got so happy finding a tub of dehydrated veggies so it doesnt feel like I'm trying to salt the feelings even though I have less than 4 packages a year since they changed the processing. Ive noticed eating light (soups instead of stew) helps keep that sick glum feeling away incase you havent had something
@Broeckchen
@Broeckchen 5 жыл бұрын
@@benson4u215 I need to be careful with my simple carb intake which makes super carb heavy things like ramen a bit problematic for me, and soups don't really leave me filled at all. ;u; My best bet healthwise is something that at the very least provides protein alongside the carbs since I can rarely avoid them entirely. Stuff like the bread in this store could be extremely helpful there because dark breads tend to have complex carbs. Together with some protein that can be very longterm filling without being a risk for me. I basically am at risk for insulin resistance, and that's why this is such a huge concern for me. I've managed to lower the risk considerably through dietary changes and weight loss but depressive phases especially make that really difficult.

"It's not tremendously fluffy" It's German bread. Count your blessings it didn't shatter the plate when you dropped it on there 😜 I, a German, was in my twenties when I learned that spelt bread could be fluffy. My mother always used to buy this incredibly dense bread that no amount of butter could make enjoyable to me, and I had to constantly drink water while eating it ^^ I'm slowly recovering from my childhood and coming around on spelt. Who knew it could be used for good rather than evil? 😁

If you are willing to be slightly flexible regarding what costitutes a can then Marks and Spencer made a canned lasagne back in the 80's. this was pre-microwave, so the idea was that you simmered the container in water to cook for an hour. It was very similar to a take away container except it had a sealed metal top rather than a cardboard top. It was really really nice up until the mid 90's when they changed the recepie and it became less good.

@@haroldbalzac6336 when the contents of the can are a solid block (e.g. tinned ham or the bread in this video), pull tabs are definitely worse, because they leave a rim around the inside edge that stops the solid content from sliding out easily. When the contents of the can are liquid, pull tabs are often worse, as the springy lid can spray sauce all over when it detaches. Just in case you wondering: "worschd" is the dialect-word for "Wurst" in most parts of Germany and simply refers to "cold cuts" or sausage. In Germany there's just no verbal differentiation between the two products 😉 Edit: rep+ for your awesome way of spelling the German words! You hit them extremely well! I actually don't know many native English speakers that pronounce that almost stereotypic German words that damn well 😍

I was watching Girl In The Wood's recent vid the other day- where she's cleaning out a survival bunker in Alaska dating from the early 90's (after the roof collapsed and the owner abandoned it). The tins actually all went bad. The thing that DID survive, was peanuts sealed in jars. And that was about it.

It's probably just impossible to not have the bread be very dense when made that way, but either way if you're in a survival situation you'd probably be quite thankful that the bread is as dense as it can be. Put it on a rock next to a fire or on a spear and it'll be toasty and less firm.

No it isn't, Rind means cattle, so in this case beef, and a Roulade is a braised rolled up piece of beef with onion ham and often also pickles inside. Maybe in some regions cake rolls may also be called Roulade, though not anywhere where I lived as far as I am aware

@@jaketimms6272 Jake Timms I see, english isn't my first lamguage so i wasn't aware that cake has such a generall meaning like pie and only really saw it as a sweet dish. Though in this case even though roulade is the name of a type of cake, it doesn't translate as cake in the name of the dish but just "roll", thats where the term comes from after all. So the name is just beef roll and is nothing like a meat pie or cake at all

I'm no stranger to weird stuff in cans. Before military rations went into airtight pouches, they all came in cans. My husband was a soldier for many years and often times leftover bits and pieces from ration packs would find their way home. One of the weirdest things were cans of boiled sweets together with a box of matches. One day my plumber arrived without a light for his blowtorch and asked did I have any matches. Imagine his face when I said 'yes', fetched a can-opener, opened the can and handed him the matches, along with one of the sweets. it was a picture!
