The funny part about this performance was the guy was not only amazing but I also realize the singer Ashanti before she rose to stardom was an audience member in the crowd.

white or black don't matter to me...its all about the voice...#1 in my book, the man can sing...
@tonygrant5994
@tonygrant5994 9 жыл бұрын
well of course he can sing, but whither he was white or black shouldnt matter, but we as african amreican people we expect so much from any one that sings a song by a iconic established falsetto singer such as Philip Bailey of earth wind and fire fame it would of been the same thing if he were to sing a song by the Legendary Eddie Kendrick of the Temptations, becuse the late mr.kendrick had established himself as a falsetto icon and we arent use to hearing an artist (white) doing a song by a voice that generally would be covered, by a african amreican, also it wasnt just blacks that were not pleased with his performance, there were whites that said he couldve done better, but iam speaking cultrually and not race wise

A shame to see some of the audience sitting there, arms folded, thinking whatever it is they were thinking about white boy showing the love for our culture. On another note: most of the crowd respond correctly, reminding me of the way Italian audiences respond when they hear great opera singers hitting notes that seem almost supernatural. Of course--just like Apollo audiences--they will let you know when they're disappointed. BIG TIME! This brother did NOT disappoint!

I saw this when it first aired. I remember the audience booing him when he told them what song he was going to sing. I also remember going to work the next day and every black dude I worked with couldn't stop talking about it. This is awesome. Thanks for the upload. I think about this all the time :D

no didn't notice Ashanti but what was extremely noticeable was the total disrespect to this wonderful talented guy... it's so sad &messed up after he had the guts to even perform at the Apollo &the nerve of the majority of jealous men sitting in the audience that just couldn't even muster up enough decency to show the respect this guy deserved...was just heartbreaking..now if the tables were turned then I'd be hearing oh they are racist...ya know fellows next time just pretend to have class even if the truth is you clearly don't..all the Chick's loved him & he was so good almost like the dramatics...&they were hot ....

He DID not get booed offstage. FOR the Apollo, that is enough. He was medium quality, not a standing ovation guy. The fact that they clapped along was enough. If you don't understand the scene you can't comprehend my comment. If a black man's voice would have cracked at the end like this guy's falsetto, HE would have been booed. I've seen a lot of Apollo.
@Transcendent-Economics-101
@Transcendent-Economics-101 6 жыл бұрын
^_^ I do think that may have been a somewhat unfair comment, though I have been wrong before. I personally didn't care for the tone of his voice, but he did a very decent job for what he was working with. I feel that if you are going to come on this stage and sing a quintessential ballad(originally sung by perhaps the 70s greatest falsetto), you have to sing it just as well or BETTER -- He did not do that. But he brought tremendous courage and was easy-on-the-eyes, which makes me respect his capacity to garner respectable attention from the ladies. But I, as a man, found it hard to admire his tone -- So I can certainly understand why many of the fellows in the audience did not applaud.
