This is a really well done student (ENMU) production "Ghost Towns of Southeastern New Mexico" which featured this section on White Oaks, New Mexico. Because of size restrictions on youtube uploads, we have had to edit it down a bit from it's original 25 minutes, which is a shame because it is really well done. Though over a decade old (history doesn't change that much), the players in this video still reside in the area except for Robert Leslie who passed several years ago. For more information on White Oaks go to www.whiteoaksnewmexico.com or www.museumsoflincoln.com This was probably done in the late 1990's. There's not date on the video.

I always felt that White Oaks was ignored in the history of Lincoln County. It was a going place. Billy the Kid stole horses from there, and the blacksmith led a posse to catch him. Someplace around there, the gold came out of the ground like wire. It was considered a great novelty to have a watch chain made out of it.

My wife & I visited White Oaks a number of years ago when considering a 'off the beaten path' place for retirement. As interesting as it is, it just didn't meet the local resources we thought would be necessary... Grocery, Hardware, Medical, etc. Still nice to mosey on through once in a while.

It's not all that far from Capitan and Carrizozo, I think it's a good place. I have some property up in Ancho, another ghostly town.

After 12 years since this video was put up, White Oaks has about 9 residents. The No Scum Allowed Saloon is still going, a very cool place for sure! Indoor and outdoor stages, horseshoe pits, and some very interesting patrons! And yeah, I was told that I had to do a shot of snakebite. It was tasty and easy to drink. Of course the recipe is a highly guarded secret.

WoW, what a video gem about American history by local people. I hope more people discover this as there is some great footage and testimonials from the people who were living in White Oaks. It seems ghost towns, their history and spook hunts are popular atm so it would be nice to see some investment in these towns to preserve the buildings, town history and such

I'd pass your comment along, though I've lost track of the students that filmed it. They did a great job and White Oaks is still pretty much as it's pictured in it. The No Scum will change ownership again in April and still remains one of the last two bars in rural Lincoln County.

He was in Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner and played the sheriff of Dodge City. One of our mentors tipped us off that he was the President of the Portales National Bank. We asked if would narrate the documentary and he obliged! Very nice man.

My documentary! Man this brings back memories. Had a such a wonderful time traveling around the region shooting this. We were up 44 straight hours editing to get it done in time. Glad to see it alive on KZfaq. I have a few VHS and DVD copies. I enjoyed everyone we talked to, especially in the beautiful town of White Oaks. The narrator was the president of the Portales National Bank and had roles in several movies, including the sheriff of Dodge City in Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner.

No mention of Billy the Kid. In my possession I have a letter written by one of the early people who wrote about Billy the Kid visiting here. He was the representative of a Kansas group who invested in the mines at White Oak.

There is a property that might fit that dream. The old Brown Store (the two story probably falling apart building in the video) was purchased by Joe Bowen and he started renovation (all new plumbing, electric, framed out bedrooms, roof, reinforced floors, etc., etc.) to make it a weekend getaway (he had money). Then he died. The realtor lives in the Gumm House in White Oaks, Anne New, Anne@tularosa.net
