I had been waiting until the Xmas season to react to this one and it was so worth the wait. A beautiful ode to Christmas and more importantly Tim's daughter. Great stuff and it really hits home to me and my lift also. Perfectly written by Tim as always!! What did you think about it?

I believe Tim wrote this song while he was living in the UK, missing Aussie Christmas with his family and longing to bring his new baby girl home to meet everyone. While I don’t drink wine, I can relate to every other aspect of this song!! Have spent many Christmases away from family and friends.

How appropriate on so many levels. Congratulations to you and your wife! Is this your first child? She'll definitely be passed around the room like a puppy at a primary school once you do make it back to Scotland. I love that he acknowledges that although Christmas is steeped in religion, it doesn't mean he can't enjoy it and celebrate it as a time for family and friends regardless.

She will be our second child. Our son was born 3 years ago just before Xmas 2019. Then with covid we couldn't leave Malaysia for 2 years. So last year was our first time back for a while and my son was completely spoiled from my family. It was great and sad to miss it again this year but next year we will have 2 of them to take back so should be very fun.

Another wonderful Aussie 'Christmas song' is 'How to Make Gravy' by another National Treasure Paul Kelly. Now I know most of the time folks say 'watch the live version' of songs, but in this case the original video clip on the roof-top affords the best, clearest rendition of the song. If you love lyrics and a great story, you'll love this. Oh, and it would be great to post it on 21st of December (Aussie time) as lots of folks will be searching for it, and reactions to it 😉😁

Tim comes from West Australia where it get very hot at Christmas. I think we all appreciate a cold drink in the sun at this time of the year, whatever it might be. Tim's such a National Treasure, a brilliant singer/songwriter/musician. As is his usual manner, Tim doesn't hold back with a few pointed criticisms, but in the end he painted a very moving picture of a beautiful Christmas surrounded by family and friends. I could see the emotion on your face Mat, I was teary too.❤

Yep 😂. In Perth, Western Australia, Xmas Day can be 46/47C. I think it will be this year. It's 39C all this week & it's not even officially Summer yet 😂. Summer starts next week. Very proud of our home-grown West Australian, Tim Minchin. Love seeing him live when he comes home. I've been overseas many times at Xmas & this is one I always play & cry.

What a timely reaction this was for you! I also see this song as a reminder that family is always there, especially when you feel a bit disconnected- whether due to distance or even just circumstance. I also think we are lucky to live in an age where video calling is fairly readily available. Of course, it’s not the same as actually being there but it is a great compromise. I live a few minutes from most of my family but, due to chronic illness, I’m unable to see them & those video calls are so special! Especially for times like Christmas & Birthdays. Congratulations on your (now few month old) baby! Really enjoyed your candid reaction. All the best to you & your family! 👍

Nice reaction. 1 small point though, it's not a sunny winter at Christmas time in Australia, it's actually our summer! Our seasons are the opposite way around in the Southern Hemisphere. So it's summertime in Dec/Jan/Feb, & winter in the middle of the year. Our Christmas experience is very different here, it's our summer holiday time but the soundtrack is Christmas songs about snow! 😆

Matt, Thank you so much for your work, comments and kindness. I am from Australia with Scottish ancestors. A long line of Gingers. My family will play Tim Minchin this Christmas, with a smile and a tear. My redheaded 38 year old son is also a fan. We shared your John Farnham "You're the Voice" reaction with friends and family. Yes, bagpipes! Your stunned reaction was a magic moment. At ACDC's Malcolm Young's funeral they had maybe 24 bagpipers playing Waltzing Matilda outside the Church as the funeral cars left. The Scottish heritage is respected. The original Long Way to the Top video by ACDC had the lead singer Bon Scott playing the bagpipes. (Check out KZfaq) We hope you, your wife and your baby girl have a lovely Christmas with your family, and maybe your daughter will be lovingly "handed around like a puppy" as some drink white wine in the sun or snow. Stay well, safe and happy. Thankyou. Alison (no need to reply, a quiet smile is enough)

In Australia it's the day before the boxing day cricket test & the beginning of the SYD to HBT yacht race and the boxing day sales where use their Xmas day gift cards. Got to get your priorities right in Aust as in the poem "And what is Xmas day?" The ready answer bared a fact no bishop ever knew. "It's the day before the races out at Tangmalangaloo"!

I love how Tim addresses the fact that what was once a religious holiday has become secular, and that that's okay. And also that what's not okay is the commercialization. If you want another Christmas song that takes on some of the hypocrisy of the Christmas season, check out Jackson Browne's The Rebel Jesus. It's musically beautiful, and has some hard hitting words for "Christians" who make a show of caring about people at Christmas but can't be bothered about the welfare of humanity for the rest of the year.

Ever since I first had a listen to this song, it has been my absolute favorite one to listen to during that time of year. One day, you'll likely be listening to this song without the distraction of reacting to it, and it will hit your emotions even more. Even now, watching you react to this song, I have to admit, my eyes got a bit watery. Tim is such a fantastic entertainer. His role as Judas in the stage production of "Jesus Christ Superstar", is absolutely incredible. (there are videos of his performances on yt...) His portrayal was so believable, and that might have been due to his own atheism, helping to fuel it. Absolutely fantastic! ... Well, damn.... looks like my night is shot now... lol... I've got some binging to do. hahaha Awesome reaction! Thank you for this. And also, congratulations to you and your wife and your new baby girl!! Cheers, and all the best!

I've always found this song to be both beautiful and painful. Unfortunately I am one of those people who find Christmas a depressing time, and for a variety of reasons. The core theme of this song being family coming together to spend time together over the Christmas period. I'm 36 now, but I lost my Dad when I was 15, and I still feel a very conspicuous absence. As more of my remaining family have passed away over the years or fragmented for one reason or another, Christmas tends to serve as a reminder of how things once were, but never again will be. I havent had Christmas decorations in my house for some years, and Christmases tend to pass quietly and without ceremony. But I love the sentiment of this song, and the honesty in the writing. Whilst this song will often tank my mood, I often recommend it to people as an example of Tim Minchins quality.

But only a couple years later my own dad died, who adored both his grandkids. My wife loves Christmas carols, but they get on my nerves. But this song I never tire of, so she loves it just for that. Maybe you can bring your parents to MY for xmas? or even better start a new family tradition all all meet in Oz for xmas, summer xmas is better for kids, poor norther hemisphere kids have next to no daylight on xmas day , they get their presssies and have no time to play with them if they even can, Aussie kids get pool toys and then have a nice long hot summer day in the pool and weeks of holidays many of which are spent in the pool playing with the new toys. Honestly I think giving a poor kids a torturous cold winter xmas is cruel.
