I think the Latina woman agreeing with the mum that she should speak Spanish shows she knows how difficult the immigrant experience is. She just wants the little girl to have an easier life (even if that will affect her identity). It's easy for a white person to say "just be yourself and speak Spanish", but as an Asian who moved to the USA myself, it's really not that simple.

I get what you're trying to say but problems arise when people stop sticking up for one another. Even if you try and justify it by saying "it was hard for me, so it will be hard for you". Maybe it wouldn't be that hard if people like you stopped stepping back and took a step forward to defend others in the same situation.

I'm latina. I was born in Cuba and moved to Canada when I was 9. I had a stepfather just like that woman. He forbid us (Mom, sister, me) from speaking Spanish in his house even though my sister and I didn't know how to speak English yet. If we ever spoke Spanish, he would get violent. He was abusive, and did a lot more things than that, but stripping us of our heritage and culture was one of the worst things he did in my eyes. I don't know how to fluently speak my own mother tongue now. When I go back to Cuba to visit, it's hard for me to communicate with my own family. I'm seen as an outsider here in Canada because I'm latina, but now I'm an outsider in my own birth country too. It's abuse what this woman is doing, and it's racist af. It might be on a different level from what I experienced but even if she's doing it "from love" instead of wanting to isolate and control the little girl like my stepfather attempted to do to us, she's still hurting the girl and people need to speak up when they see something like that go down. Especially so in the US because they don't even have an official language like here in Canada, so everyone insisting that people speak English and ONLY English are ignorant on more than one front. Look, I get where you're coming from. Yes, it's important to speak the language of the country you choose to live in and to assimilate with the culture there as well. But trying to erase someone's identity, especially a child's, is wrong and abhorrent. It causes damage, it leads to the devaluation and "othering" of different cultures, which in turn leads to prejudice and the propagation of hate. It is not okay, and I'm so proud of people who spoke up to defend that little girl.

When have you ever filled out an information form, and it states for you to indicate your language....do you see ”American”? Because I notice English, Spanish, etc., there is no messed up version on a language. If you can find one, let me know.

I experienced this working at Starbucks, when I noticed the young girl speaking with me had a Russian accent and I began to speak Russian with her. As she started responding, her "adopting" father interrupted with "She's from Russia but she's American now." (Clearly implying he didn't want us speaking Russian). I felt so bad for the girl because I could clearly tell her level of Russian conversation was stuck at the level of a 10-11 year old even though she was at least 16. She clearly needed to practice and speak with other Russian speakers and doesn't get that opportunity. Still think about her from time to time...

I work with English language learners in the classroom. They always revert back to their old language when trying to explain something because that’s the only way they understand. It’s hard learning a new language, and difficult when transitioning into a new culture. It’s a process and a journey for them. This is not the way we go about teaching our kids. We need kindness and a whole lot of patience.

not only is trying to mask other people's culture just plain rude and unacceptable, but the U.S. also doesn't have an official language so it literally makes no sense at all

Yeah like I live in ireland our official language is Irish we can all speak it it is taught in schools but we speak fluent English also the I nay reason we don't speak fluent Irish is because the English basically banned us from speaking our launguage

It certainly is, but so many people say it like it's a actually a language of its own! I think I would have brought up how advantageous it is to be bilingual (or more!) in today's world! We have the option to learn Spanish and French and German, etc, in our schools because it is an amazing skill to have!

sandblanket Why would you speak the language of the conquered and overthrown? Wonder if some psuedo intellectual woke Mongolain chick would tell her father to speak Chinese after he was being a dick to a Chinamen during Genghis Khan's reign. Same with the Portuguese to the amazonians. The North Africans with the southern Italians and Spainards. The Vikings to the Turks. Etc
