Congratulations on the new calf. We used to make sure the calf was feeding and would even put the cow in a head stall to allow the calf to eat. If, while milking, you tie the cow's legs together she will not be able to kick.

I think Blazey will fit her since she's a fighter and didn't give up on trying to feed when when her mom kicked her off

For a calf, one problem could be the high solid content of Jersy cow milk for digestion.

Congratulations on the new heifer. Never give up while there is life. Save that colostrum. You never know when you, or a neighbor, might need it. Freeze it for future use. Glad she is eating now.

A good way to see if a calf is nursing when you suspect they are, is through the bottle you were using. They won’t take a bottle nipple if they’ve gotten milk from the cow, they also won’t suck on your finger if they’ve gotten milk from the cow. And another thing to note is, like newborn babies, newborn calves sleep A LOT! And hoe much they sleep depends entirely on their personality and how ambitious they are

She's so cute! How about Tillie or Betty? Hope the calf gets all her nourishment from mama and not have to be bottle fed. That would be hard work. Congratulations! Miah from Roots and Refuge got a device to keep the cow from kicking and it seems to work well. You should check it out. It's just a curved bar that goes over the rump and keeps the cow from raising her hind leg. It might make milking safer for you.

The little calf having trouble may warrant a vet visit, some things we see with slow calves is head trauma from birthing or potential injury in the head and neck that can last for a few days after birth. In most cases we have a vet come out and give a steroid injection for the swelling or potential swelling in the brain, and a vitamin/metabolic starter injection to fortify the calf and stimulate it to continue to try and feed. Another thing to check for is incomplete palette where the roof of the mouth doesn't fully close off, causing latching and feeding problems. signs of this would be milk discharge from the nose, or head shaking and a lot of huffing or snorting from the calf. Its important when feeding a slow calf to never squeeze of force milk into them as they may aspirate the milk into the lungs. Best of luck I do hope she continues to make gains!

Miracle ! Since you guys were so worried ab her!

For calves that won’t nurse, it’s a good idea to have a little bit of frozen colostrum from a previous cow’s birth on hand, you can put it in a pop bottle, warm it up and stick your finger in the mouth and give it to them that way. If she won’t even suckle on your finger (most do) than that is a BIG uh oh. The colostrum will give her some strength and some warmth, but will also provide her with some colostrum in case she doesn’t figure out nursing right away. The way we keep our mamas from kicking us is by giving them grain while we work with the calf, and also, make sure your hands are nice and warm when you go to touch her bag, since they hate cold hands touching their bag, bc it doesn’t resemble the feeling of the calf’s mouth. Another thing you can get is a little metal rod with a curved end on one end that you can grab the teat with and just stick in the calf’s mouth. One thing you need to make sure of is that you are going out there every couple of hours and working with the calf until it begins nursing on it’s own, and keep some bottles of milk on hand in case, bc you’ll need them if she doesn’t start nursing from mom to keep her hydrated. It’s also good to get some mineral oil and a little oil can and squirt that on the bag, it will make the bag smell too the calf and will actually make the teats easier for it to grab, and it’s also good to have more than one person when trying to get the calf to nurse, one to hold the calf and one to put the teat in it’s mouth
