I think that duck and pheasant are going to end up being lifetime buddies. It seems like they bonded really quickly. I hope they both survive.

Perhaps y'all should use heat lamps for all the babies born on the farm? Whenever our chicks have hatched, we kept them in very large Rubbermaid containers w/a heat lamp located on one side so the chicks can move to & away from it. We've kept a thermostat in there, & maintained a temp of between 85-95°.They've all thrived from every hatching. Just a thought...

Yeah I absolutely don't get why they wouldn't provide additional heat to such sensitive ducklings who clearly couldn't handle the cold. They are dying because they need more heat. It's simple.

That was adorable when then pheasant snuggled up to the mandarin chick while it was hatching. It was the perfect “awe” moment for me. I had surgery a week ago Tuesday. I didn’t get out of the hospital until Friday. I went back in Monday due to complications and I am still there. Thank you for sharing that.

It sucks when animals die, babies or adult as you do grow attached to them. Also, I think that ducklings also don't start producing their water proof oil from their gland that is located on the base of their tail until they are a little older. So if they get wet, they will be cold and will need warmth until they mature enough to waterproof their feathers. It's possible that this information is already known, but if not, I hope it will be useful.

I think once you have your aviary ready, you can let the parents take care of the chicks. My dad used to have wood ducks and mandarins in the same enclosure with cranes and partridges, and every year they would hatch 10-15 ducklings, and in bad weather the mother would just take them behind some large rocks away from the wind. You still do get the occasional turf war between pairs though.

I'm breading Mandarins for 25 years. I put 1 Drake with 1 or 2 Hens in a well closed aviary which is mice and rat free. Lots of plants in the aviary. It should be quite bushy. A little pond of at least 1sq meter with running water and a filter system outside the aviary, like a typical fish pond. They prefer nests which are lifted at least 30cm above ground but will breed on the ground as well. Put more nests than needed so they can choose. Prepare the nest floor with soft dry grass. The nest should not be deep on the inside so babies can get out easily. If the nest is raised you should make sure the babies can enter the nest from the outside again, for hiding. Put the food away from the water to prevent them from over eating. Running between the water and food container is well needed exercise. Not enough exercise will paralyze them, too much will kill them. Very very important...do not catch them, do not play with them, DO NOT DESTERB, keep pets and children away from the aviary. The opening of the nests should face to the back of the aviary so they have privacy. Put some thick tree branches and rocks for them to sit on since they are perching ducks. All this preparation should be done before the breeding season. Do not move the hen and babies to another aviary, for the babies will stress and die. When I say they will die, I don't mean at that moment. When they are stressed up they will die over the cause of several days while eating well and look healthy. A white Mandarin pair with 9 babies escaped from the aviary. We caught all of them by hand and put them back in the same aviary. Within a week 5 babies died. These ducks tends to be very wild and should be left alone as much as possible while breeding and while the babies are small. You mean to do well and take care of them, but you're presence are killing them. The female are calling for the babies to hide, but they have nowhere to hide from you. Their stress levels are running through the roof. Other species are different, but Mandarins and Wood ducks needs total privacy. Dabbling ducks are easier to raise.

Yay the new video and on my favorite birds!! I absolutely have fallen in love with mandrin ducks since seeing your videos of them. They are so beautiful! It's so sad that nature is so unpredictable and took a few from you all. I love seeing how hard you guys work together as a family to take care of all the animals. My 4 children ( 1 boy and 3 girls) said they love seeing your kids make things with Legos for the bees and watching your ducks on the pond.

The ducks need to learn from experience to be good parents. If you let that same pair raise their own young again next year and the year after, they should have a better success rate each year. Whether the heavy losses in the earlier broods is worth it is a different question

Hey question, the babies you say are freaked out when separated from their parents. Have you tried doing something like using a plush/warm thing to serve as a 'mother' they can cuddle up to? I know people do this for puppies or kittens that don't have mom and that provides babies with some comfort. I am not sure if it would work for ducks but maybe it could? get some stray feathers and attach them to some soft thing?
