Far Cry 5. A black sheep? A white horse? Or a demon? Your sin is for John to determine. Far Cry 5's sin, two years later, is what we're here to find now. Some said it was cowardice. Some said it was hatred. Some said it was Joseph. Joseph said it was you. He wouldn't be right about that. Right?

Black Friday sale at gmg-performance.com/pages/whitelight! You can get whitelight shirts at www.whitelight.store. Also gotta give a special shout out to Leslye Gisell for Only You! Was originally going to try covering it myself. Didn't quite go to plan. Had to make a last minute change, and that definitely paid off. kzfaq.info. Let me know if you'd like to see more Far Cry!

This game definitively proves that the writers at Ubisoft are entirely capable of writing a thoughtful and meaningful game. Imagine if the team was allowed to make their own game without the restrictions of being a Far Cry game. A linear narrative action game in the style of Deus Ex with the message of Far Cry 5 would, in my opinion, be absolutely amazing. Being able to pace the action so that each part of the message hits at the exact right moment and won't be diluted and interrupted by open-world busywork.

it hurts so much because Ubisoft clearly have something to say in the gaming space, it's just always hidden under the slop of mediocrity they push out every year. they are entirely capable to make a truly great game but all, they do is follow popular gameplay trends

@@webinkdottThe developers of Ubisoft are huge victims to deadlines and market trend following set by the higher ups. @Xaxp

Some aspects are sensible. Just most of their methods are psychopathic. They economically built up Hope County due to buying property and investing in the area and then "reaped" as much as they could store in their bunkers; whether the people they "saved" wanted to or not. Honestly, Josephs biggest mistake was letting his mentally unstable siblings run ANY part of his cult. Since John is a sadistic man-child who opts to maim people and throw tantrums when he doesn't get his way, Jacob is a "survival of the fittest" PTSD ridden cannibal obsessed with Pavlovian training, and Faith is a drug addict who actively ENSLAVES people with Bliss. Joseph was the only person who had any business leading and could have gone about his operation without attracting the attention of the US Marshalls, but because he decided to kill a spy instead of feeding him a sanitized version of his cult... well, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten a Far Cry game, now would we?

Just playing through the prologue of Far Cry 5 got me thinking of how long it's been since a video game's prologue has gripped me and really immersed me into the world of the game. Maybe God Of War (2018) was the last game that had me like that from just the prologue. On my first FC5 playthrough, I remember hearing Joseph Seed whisper, "No one is coming to save you." As he stares, unblinking, almost as if he's not saying that to the character but to you, the player, as he stares at you through the fourth wall. A literal chill went down my spine when I heard that and I had to pause it... I was like, "Holy Shit! That actually got to me! That was creepy as F**K!" Amazing mo-cap scenes in this game. Best Far Cry since 3 IMO!

When I first played Far Cry 5 I wasn’t sure if it was going to be as good as previous entries… until the helicopter crashes & Joseph produces such a powerful stare it feels like he just looked into your soul. That’s when I realised I was dealing with something totally different. We always hear about cults, most famously David Koresh’s Waco incident. You often hear about cults and think about how absurd their beliefs are but Far Cry 5 does a brilliant job of showing how such groups are so successful and even makes you question their beliefs, it’s a magnificent piece of work. What a brilliant game & an even better psychological breakdown. A truly entertaining watch

@@EmilyKimMartin This is a big problem with Far Cry 5 that Whitelight didn't touch on: A failure to connect the gameplay with the story. Just like in far cry 3, the game (especially by the end) empowers you to an insane degree. Almost no combat challenge, let alone a single man, will ever give you trouble. However, when you get to the story bits, you turn back into a normal person and are powerless to interact with the game. I didn't listen to far cry 5's more philosophical elements not because I didn't think they could be interesting, but because I just wanted to blow Joseph Seed away with a shotgun and shut him up; you can do that to nearly every enemy in the game, so lemme do it now. but NOPE. The game can't give you that agency, because then it would completely lose all story composure. That's understandable, and it's the same problem that exists in every far cry game since 3, but when it tries to shove the indoctrination down my throat, it becomes more annoying than anything else; I'm annoyed now, and don't want to engage.

@@itouchmazter5973 You can think of it as putting her out of her misery too. Throughout the game you keep learning of Rachel/Faith's brainwashing and suffering by Joseph(they aren't blood like the three brothers are. Rachel was addicted and manipulated by Joseph into becoming their little sister Faith. She isn't even the first girl he's done this to). She's too loyal to completely turn against him, but she still fears disobeying him and is caught in the middle. At the same time, there's a ton of infuriating hypocrisy. She scolds you that the ones you liberated from The Misery were there of their own choice and not to interfere again. Never mind that the whole region's water supply is tainted with bliss and everyone's tripping balls 24/7. Not cool. A side note, but one of the cults used for inspiration did something similar to a town in Oregon named Antelope. The Rajneeshees started off as a compound outside the city, but grew in numbers and started moving people into Antelope. They ended up taking over the town. Tried to expand into the larger town called The Dalles. Their plans didn't work, but this cult might've turned into a militant one like in Far Cry 5 if things went too far. They did try to mass poison the population of The Dalles.

At least with regard to Watch Dogs and Far Cry 5, the politics are not what your average Joe who doesn’t give much thought to politics, thinks constitutes politics. In other words, these games didn’t specifically lean left or right politically, which is all that most people think matters with regards to discussions of politics. When the pre-release gripes with FC5 from right-leaning folks had to do with whether or not it was going to be critical of right-wing politics, and the post-release gripes from the left-leaning ones were about how it wasn’t, it gives us an insight as to what Ubisoft probably means by “politics”. They seem to mean that they’re at least not playing the same political game everyone else does. At least, not publicly in the games they make.

This seems to me like a widespread semantic issue. Politics and culture war overlap but are not the same in distinct ways. Because there is absolutely no way Ubisoft actually believes there's no politics in their games. They are one of the most thematically overt companies in the mainstream. Assassin's Creed was once defined by an overt ideological conflict. Watch Dogs 2 has the most unsubtle political message in any game I've seen yet. And then of course there's Far Cry 5 with Eden's Gate's ideas.

@Harutyun Tatlyan I’m about to beat the game for my fourth time (don’t ask), it’s a fun game but I don’t fault people if they want to give it a bad review. The story is so awful that it genuinely takes away enjoyment especially with kidnapping causing SO many progress related bugs. AAA developers should be held to the standard of hiring a decent writer and/or game director. The mission’s also not really important to the main story content but it was decent. Could’ve made it less predictable though: I didn’t clue into specifically Eli-though granted that’s because the layouts didn’t actually match-but I knew it was “conditioning” to break into some sort of friendly compound. They also could have done it without so many damn kidnappings.
@jakemartinez6894
@jakemartinez6894 3 жыл бұрын
@Harutyun Tatlyan The story was just not super developed; it was split into three sections which is great for openness but they didn’t handle it well. Also I will keep coming back to this because it is the game’s greatest flaw THE NUMBER OF KIDNAPPINGS THOUGH... one would’ve been more than enough. The opening was amazing though and is what first sold me on the game, if only they’d kept the same level of quality throughout. Also on the whole openness vs story thing Zelda somehow made it work (though with less story than I would like from most games) so it is doable.

I feel like a major point many people have missed is the fact that the Seeds all had a psychologically traumatizing past, fisrt is the fact that Joseph directly mentions that John, the older brother, was abused constantly by his parents and that the way he tried to confront it was saying "yes" to it, starting his whole yes to everything schtick. We could assume that this abuse would be extended to the other 2 brothers. Jacob served in the army and was left stranded with his squadmate, having to kill and then (presumably) cannibalize him just to survive. Joseph lost his wife in a traffic accident and then killed his only child because he belived god told him to. My point is that these people are not just a band of "woke" guys who have found the answer to societys problems and are trying to fix it, no, these are 3 broken men that seek to explain the devastating trauma that they went through using cult-like rethoric and some sort of god given mission, seeing the world through a skewed lens molded by trauma and pain.

And those Ubisoft's ''another Ubisoft game'' have certain quality standard when it comes to mechanics and visuals, wich is good.
