The biggest detail that made the horses so human in this movie are the eyebrows - horses don't have it, and it's a huge tool to showcase emotion. This is by far one of the best animations ever - story, pacing, characters, soundtrack and score (Hans Zimmer did the instrumental part) and the quality of the animation, all top tier, absolutely perfect. I can tell you, as an Equine(horse) artist, they did a fantastic job of making the characters move and feel pretty much like real horses. They’re some of the most complex animals to draw, and indeed, the animators did spend a ton of time with actual horses, specifically a Kiger Mustang that they based Spirit’s design on. They really captured them beautifully, I love this movie. I usually hate how horses are portrayed in animation, because they’re often rendered so badly, or are reduced to giant dog-like caricatures. This movie really did me proud💜

Hey guys, I'm glad you enjoyed the film. I was a co-director of Spirit 20 years ago. It was a labor of love with an amazing team. We had the animators draw from life - DWks purchased a Kiger mustang that was the model for Spirit. The animators also took riding lessons to understand the biomechanics of horse movement...and it shows.

To answer your question about refencing, DreamWorks did in fact buy a captive bred Kiger mustang they named Spirit (before that he was called Donner of Steens Mountain). Both is mother and father were wild caught Kiger mustangs. Kiger is the range he was descended from, and mustang is the breed. After the making of the movie Spirit was given to Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation and remains there as an ambassador for the breed. Also, as a side note Rain's color is a flaxen chestnut pinto. Flaxen indicates the lighter mane and tail, chestnut is the reddish coloration on the body, and pinto indicates that the body is not a solid color but has patches. An example of palomino would be Spirit's mother in the movie.

This might just be one of the top animated movies to date. It is INSANELY impressive and I have nothing but praise for it. I don’t know why they brought on Bryan Adams, who is…an 80’s rock band leader if I recall, but he did a FANTASTIC job with the songs. The story is fantastic and you get goosebumps of how legendary this freaking horse is. Probably up there with Secretariat’s athletic feats just to take a gander. Just more hoppy. The only movie I like from this era more is Treasure Planet and that just might be because I love that fantasy world so much. They are either my top 2 favorite movies, or WallE lands somewhere inbetween them. And that’s IT.

And you can observe that the animators using that perfectly hear. The music is Hans Zimmer. That is why it is so beautiful. My favourite animated movie (next to the Iron Giant)

I know some people get into drawing through anime, but I got into it through Spirit and other movies like it. The behind the scenes on the DVD had a lot about how they mixed 2D and 3D and also had tutorials for kids to draw along. I did those, but then later would just pause this movie and others to draw different shots and then later learned to draw my own stuff. This movie will always be very dear to me for that. And I thought it was genius to have an animated movie about animals but they don’t really talk. It felt more grown up to me. My sister and I also had the soundtrack on CD so I know every line and music que by heart

I loved this movie so much as a kid I had a horse themed 6th birthday party! Such an underrated movie, the Matt Damon inner monologue is such a cool way to have the main character "speak" while still keeping it realistic. Also Bryan Adams went hard with this soundtrack and I appreciate it so much. Love watching movies with you guys!

I was obsessed with the film and especially the music in my teenage years and I have seen it countless times. There was not a single time when I didn't cry at Sound the Bugle. Such a masterpiece of a film. My cousin is pretty good at art stuff and she gifted me a painting of Spirit and Rain and a cut out of Spirit's silhouette on my birthday :) I still have them about 15 years later.

I related so much to Sound the Bugle during the hard times I've had in high school and college (a lot of AP classes and now an Engineering Degree) when my greatest efforts feel hopeless and the road ahead seems unbearable, but that line... "You're a soldier now/Fighting in a battle/To be free once more/Yeah, that's worth fighting for..." that line gave always gave me the inspiration I needed to keep fighting and push through the sleepless nights and tears. Every once in a while I look up reviews of this movie on KZfaq to see if there are any new ones, it's always nice to see other people who appreciate this movie the way I do

This movie is pure nostalgia, but i still cry every time i watch it, and just like NTF said, i notice new things after watching it again years later. I also like how the soldier guy that was the "villain" in the beginning wasn't a total evil cartoonish character. The fact that he let them go in the end gives him at least some depth.

Rain's horse breed is Paint One of the many things I love about Spirit is that you couldn't just ride him and/or be his friend. You had to earn it I LOVE this movie so much!!!!! I would sing the songs from this movie whenever I could, mainly "You Can't Break Me" and "Get Off My Back". I always cry at the of the movie. Also, this movie saved me mentally and emotionally when I was in the shelter system for almost two years. I can't explain in words just how much and what this movie means to me. I glad that you both enjoyed this movie :)

Spirit is what's called a buckskin (the light brown with black main and tail and legs). His mom is a palomino (pale brown / yellow or gold with a white main and tail), and then Spirit's lady love is a pinto. There's also a paint horse, but paint horses require certain bloodlines and registration in addition to the coloring. As someone else mentioned, the APHA (American Paint Horse Association) gave the mare an honorary registration, which I think is cute / cool.

spirit's colour is actually a hot topic for debate! while his dam is palomino and his sire (in the books) is black, he has the primitive markings of a dun like the kiger mustang his design was based on. my personal vote is buckskin nd1 (a "non-dun" variant that doesn't cause dilution but does cause primitive markings), but bay dun is also quite popular (also paint and pinto are different things! paint refers to the american paint horse breed, which rain is technically a foundation aph? most paints are pintos. pinto is a term used to refer to a group of white spotting patterns. rain herself would be a flaxen chestnut tobiano (a type of pinto) american paint horse)

This is one of those movies that I only watched once. It's an awesome movie, but it got to me so much (it's one of the few movies to make me cry, when Rain gets hurt and then the "Sound of the Bugel" segment). I am glad I saw it, but I don't think I could ever watch it on my own again because it affected me that much. It's mentally and emotionally hard. This soundtrack is easily in my Top #5, I'll listen to every single song (even the instrumental songs). My fav song is actually an instrumental one, called "Run Free". Fav lyrical song is "You Can't Take Me". I do like how the main char, Spirit, doesn't 'talk', but is still the narrator. Matt Damon did a great job! The saddest thing about this movie, it's the fact that this DID happen in real life. The suppression of the Native Americans and the 'taming of the wild west' pushing species like the Buffalo to be endangered. Thankfully things were done to rectify these mistakes, but it'll never be the same. FYI, Tarzan did come before this movie. It's 1999 this was 2002.

This movie is criminally underrated. This is such an unique movie, animationwise with sweeping shots of landscape and creative ways of animating the eild horses and Spirit in their habitat, and the fact that the very horses the movie is about are the focus of this movie, down to the fact that the makers of this movie fidn’t make the animals speak but such like the voice of Spirit says in the opening scene ”this story was written in the heart of horses”, which is shown by Spirit narrating his thoughts to the audience in key moments where otherwise his feelings and reactions are conveyed through sheer body-language and expressions typical to a horse. This is and has always been my favorite nimated movie since childhood, and I love everything about it. The score and songs are a perfect addition to the movie, and whenever I listen to the score it gives off pure emotion and it gives off the feeling of horses galloping freely on the prairie. I’m so glad you reacted to this movie and I’m really enjoy you watching these movies with such enthusiasm and appreciation for their art, music and style.

I LOVE horses still with all my heart!! I still watch this movie all the time, as it was one of my FAVORITES when I was little... SO, I'm super happy you both liked it too!!! Fun fact: They also spent months with horse experts to get the correct movement and musculature down... They even went as far as buying a Kiger Mustang named Donner, so they could get the movements and features down pat. They even did a crash course of sorts for the Dreamworks team, and they were sent to the L. A. Equestrian Center, where they learned about the locomotion, anatomy, movement, and behavior of horses to make sure they got everything right when they got to the final product.... as a horse lover myself, I can attest to how hard it is to draw horses correctly!

the animation in this movie was absolutely groundbreaking. Dreamworks had to design a software program from scratch to accomplish it and were basically the first ones to blend 2D and 3D so flawlessly. and really there hasn't been another animated movie that comes even close to this level.
