And do the plugins justice. I know you're biased towards hardware but I've actually heard mixes and masters that get really really really close to hardware. It's usually that 3D effect that's more defined in the analog gear that I've yet to hear software match.

The problem with the subscription model is that it's like renting a house, you never own it. You stop paying for it and you have nothing again. Makes it a pain if you load old projects using that software

Also comparing it to owning hardware at least, if you don't need it anymore, you can sell it. Usually for not much less than you bought it for. Reselling software is a bit more finicky, but can be done in some cases.

I am glad you mentioned the subscription issues. I have always felt if, for example, you were sick for a few months and unable to work, you would lose access to your tools. Depending on your finances when you are well enough means a heavy outlay immediately if you had the money. Imagine you were a carpenter, plumber or electrician? You would not rent your tools!

Subscription based plugins or access to hardware tools online are an introduction to “you will own nothing and be happy” 😂 Recently I have also tried UAD plugins and KIT plugin (1073pre) both have cloud license and do not work if your pc is not connected to the internet!!! The GE additions only add extra bands / more features, nothing is handicapped, no? The sound doesn’t change. Nova for example, the GE only adds 2 more bands, IIRC. It’s nice to have, but not exactly necessary.

@@ASJerrell well yes thats true for nova, but for stuff like kotelnikov or molot the ge editions do add a lot of cool features (although even for nova, because its a parallel design eq, you could argue that adding another nova in series is not the same as having extra bands)

Like to make a comment about subscriptions. I have the slate sub, and I got in back in 2019 because I love all they were offering.... BUT the main reason at the time was I was about to buy a distressor . I could have spent $1500 for 1 distressor or $150 a year for a plugin that pretty much does it. Plus get a ton of great other software. So far after 4 years I almost spent $600 on my favorite subscription. So i saved $900 so far and have a ton of other great plugins now that I love even more than having 1 distressor.

An interesting topic. For my MacBookPro 13" I use Garageband with the typical EQ, Compressor, gate, pedalboard and time based efx as well as the integral soft-instruments like vintage synths and keys. Then some of he software that came with the Scarlett 6i6: the Focusrite Red 2 & 3, Softtube Drawmer S73 & TSAR 1R Reverb, Novation Bass-station The Positive Grid Bias amp 2 that was supplied from a fan, then an array of cool soft synths I got at no cost :) All in all, I use only 1/10 of what I have on board and tried out - a few licenses (I never use) and no subscriptions !

@ 0:42 - Regarding plugin subscriptions: It must be stated that plugin subscriptions are GREAT under the following circumstances: ... 1) For the limited time through which you can't afford to pay the cost for outright ownership. 2) For those who are starting out or want an extended test and learning period across a library of plugins, most of which you don't know their function, usefulness, or quality, a subscription you can use on the cheap, until you determine the ones you actually need and want to buy, can't be beat. Even restarting a subscription temporarily for another month to do more in-depth testing and learning isn't a bad idea for those plugins that don't offer much of a trial period. Oops! Just came back to indicate another strong reason why plugin subscriptions can be preferred over buying outright: 3) AI ... We're on the cusp of a phenomenally disruptive transition. Though it isn't fully apparent just YET, with the advancing pace of AI innovation, ALL sectors of music production plugins will face exponential change. Coveted plugins of today, though still highly functional and effective, will lose favor and begin to gather dust as newer AI-fortified plugins lead to better and faster workflows and arguably better results. Subscribing to plugin libraries rather than buying would be a hedge against investing huge amounts of money to own plugins whose upgradable shelf-life might grow increasingly shorter. My bet is that plugin manufacturers will begin to create new lines of AI-fortified plugins rather than updating current lines. The current lines would still be supported with bug fixes, but new features will be applied only to the newer AI-fortified plugins, leaving the old lines behind in terms of innovation, as well as your investment in them.

On the subject of Technology, I'm visually impaired and was looking into a solution for having outboard gear. I find it seriously difficult to use patch bays and I found a patch bay called "Flock Audio Patch" and Patch LT. I love the sound of it but can't afford to spend, or justify spending €1680 (£1500). Dunno if you tried it yet, but if you know of any other DSUB patch bays that are a. lot less expensive and more accessible to someone like myself who is on a low income?

If you think small devs are pushing it too much, you have no idea what's happening with the big boys behind the scenes. I shouldn't talk too much just to not get myself in some trouble, but Avid or Waves? Lol. They are literally nothing compared to some other B2B vendors. And there is a very solid economical reason, why this massive push is unstoppable by pretty much anyone, despite everyone hating subscriptions for the very reasons you've mentioned. You're dutch, right? I challenge you to come to IBC this year and perform a drinking game to words "subscription model" and "cloud solution". You're gonna be shitfaced in 30 minutes.
