Joel Hoekstra. Maybe not the most famous rock guitarist in the world but one of the better players for sure. Joel sits down with us to tell his story on coming to Hollywood... a few days late. But he's a true survivor in the crazy music business. He has an amazing career. Performing on Broadway for years with the very famous "Rock Of Ages" and then jumping over to Trans Siberian Orchestra, then Night Ranger for 7+ years. If thats not enough he was able to wow David Coverdale into hiring him for the Whitesnake gig. These are all huge notches in the gun belt of what we think is one of the best guitar gunslingers out there. Oh and did we mention a super nice guy as well. We love this interview and think you will too. Remember to subscribe and stay tuned to the 80sMRB for new interviews. ENJOY!

When Grunge hit I quit listening to the radio and just played my cassettes!!! On another note I've had the great pleasure of seeing Joel play with Whitesnake.

This guy is not only great player but has his head screwed on straight. A combination that is IMO the exception versus the norm in music. Great interview.

Joel is definitely hands down the most humble, sincere, nicest, appreciative and down to earth guy in the industry. So versatile in his playing abilities and can play anything. I have so much respect for him and other musicians need to heed to his advice to be successful in the industry. Hats off to you Joel!

When Grunge,Alternative and Rap took over, people would tell me You need to stop living in the past,Move on...I answered Move on to WHAT?!THIS crap?!I've only listened to CD's(and cassettes early on)from 91' on.I play several instruments at a very high skill level, regardless of what's cool.+ I'm OLD!MUCH respect for JH for his Mental Toughness/Focus,Pesistence,Positivity,Work ethic,Uber high skill level. He should've been a major 80's player,a household name, but was born too late.I'm grateful for JH's work on Rock of Ages,TSO,Peterik,Broadway&Whitesnake. And for carrying the torch and keeping rock guitar alive.🤟🎸

Phenomenal player. Definite Randy Rhoads influence with his solos being written out mini etudes within a song with the perfect amount of improv to always keep it interesting. He’s great.

I love Joel. Saw him when he was with Night Ranger on two concerts. He smiles and has a great time and is an incredible player. Thanks for letting us hear him talk about his journey. He missed being in the 80s bands in their heyday but in some ways he dodged a bullet since he didn't end up living that lifestyle of theirs either. Now he can play with many of them and enjoy it and enjoy the adulation from their fans.

As far as music goes It was a depressing time when the music scene changed, I never got into grunge. I remember Metal coming back a little earlier, I believe it was the late 90s I started seeing bands play shows again. I was so happy I went to just about every show that came through my area, sometimes even the next state over.

Exactly, it's all about the music, your personal taste and the enjoyment of it... When Nirvana and the "Seattle scene" got big in the 90's some buffoon of MTV and Rolling Stone mag where obsessed with that n' drove all the efforts of the media to manipulate the minds of the buyers, always saying "that is done, they're over" and guess what??? They still around!!! and the Nirvana "revolution" diluted as it came... The lesson is: don't let a buffoon decide for you what's cool or not.

I feel the same way about metal. I knew the first time I saw "Teen Spirit" on Headbangers Ball that I hated Nirvana and Joel's right, within 6 months Metal was dead. I liked Alice and Soundgardern's Bad Motorfinger, but really didn't like Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Grunge lacked musicianship to me and quite frankly, it was depressing music. Plus, you didn't see beautiful girls at the shows, not like the hair metal or metal concerts. I think EVH was right, 80's was Cocaine and party years, 90's was Heroine and suicide and dark years. People just want the good times back. Music and Politics can relate in this instance, 80s is Capitalism and the 90s is Socialism.
