Check out John Sykes' Magnum Opus,Blue Murder! The self titled album is an absolute masterpiece where John writes,sings and plays the sht out of the guitar! Carmine Appice on drums and Tony Franklin the fretless wonder on bass. Every song is killer IMO.

I prefer the original version of this song, I think David was being morw honest when he played along with Lord, Marsden, Moody, Murray and Paice!

100% agree! John Sykes is the total package. An incredible songwriter who can absolutely wail when he sings (just as good or better than Coverdale live imo) and who absolutely destroys the guitar with his own unique style,wide AF vibrato and instantly recognizable tone. Had the first Blue Murder album been released in 1987 it would've blown TF up just like WS1987 did thanks to John's "Wall of Sound". I love Steve Vai and enjoy some of the heavily processed,super slick songs on SOTT,but compared to the stripped down,raw AF & massive John Sykes guitars on Slide it in & WS 1987 it's night and day IMO.

Bernie Marsden is the guy who truly deserves the praise.

@@ricpel9975 that’s not true at all, Tawny Kitain had a year long affair with OJ when she was in an open relationship with Robbin Crosby of the band Ratt. She and Robbin met in high school when she was 16 and moved to LA with him. She’s on the first 2 Ratt album covers. This was years before she met David Coverdale.

@@imaretromillenial1990 Robbin Crosby was afraid of OJ, that's why it was an open relationship. He even said in an interview, I'm a good size guy but OJ was used to running over guys bigger than me. I was pretty disappointed to hear him say that. Of course that's not the only reason they were in an open relationship, Robin was in his prime and he had all kinds of beautiful women chasing after him, some just as hot, or hotter than Tawny, but she was hot back then.

I'd been buying Whitesnake albums for years B4 tha album w/ Sykes...when that album came out I thought it was some kind of comeback album they'd already been around so long.

Not only that but during the same summer/fall of '80'81, when I was buying my Whitesnake albums from a local record store, I heard the radio DJ announce that Deep Purple were reuniting to tour again. I freaked out. Didn't know which line up was going to tour. This was highly unexpected news. Whitesnake with Lord and Paice were doing fine. Blackmore with Glover were fine. Ian Gillan was doing alright in the UK. Hughes had fallen off the face of the earth. Would it be some mixture of these two Purple's. All the way up to the day of the show, no press. None. Nothing! Showed up. The opening band was named Myst. Good a good laugh. An 8000 seater music hall was at a feverous pitch. Deep Purple were about to come on stage and people were going nuts like I'd never seen. The band comes out and begins Highway Star. Sounds a bit off. Maybe it's rust, give them some more time. Man, still sounds awful. What's up? Im fact it doesn't sound nor look like Deep Purple. Audience was mad. I though I recognized one Purple member though. Oddly it was Rod Evens, Purple's original singer who sang on Hush, and he, they and It were horrible. They butchered the music. Didn't even sound like the songs. That's hard to do! I remember, "This one's "Might Just Take Your Live." The organ intro was all wrong, the groove awful, It was BAD BAD BAD. A garageband made up of 12 year old musicians with only a month of practice could have given them a run for their money. As weird as it was as I was, and pissed too, I'm still glad I got to see it because I got to see and hear Rod Evans, and I think it helped start Purple's reunion, even if it was just a small part. But it's truly sad that Coverdale and Hughes couldn't get it together with Blackmore before Lord died for the much anticipated MKIII reunion. Yeah, MKII is the more definitive version, but as of now exulding Paice of course, all of the MKIII musicians are better than the MKII musicians. (both Glover and Hughes are great bassists for totally different reasons). MKIII has said in the past that they wanted to make that "Machine Head" heavy MKIII 3rd album that they never got to make. That would have been awesome because Hughes can still sing and play just as well or better than in '73, Coverdale has lost quite a bit but if he stays down in his baritone he sounds fine. Lord is always ready. Blackmore would have gone nuts with that powerful lineup. Especially if Paice would have done it. The other abomination of "Deep Purple" with a few good songs granted, have done nothing interest since Blackmore left. It's really now the Ian Gillan band. That's why I hope Blackmore can finally reach a deal with Coverdale and Hughes, maybe a Wakeman kid on keys and Ian Paice on drums, to show the world just who made Deep Purple. Wouldn't take long that's for sure. There's your story of the day!

He had run through all of his money by the time he had lunch with Marty Callner. The 1987 album took at least 2 years to make, and in the meantime he had relocated to LA and there was no touring money coming during this time.

Yeah. I really like the 'US Radio Mix'. I bought the UK 12" version upon release, which I think has them both. There are now so many different versions of the '1987' story knocking about that it is difficult to know what to believe - especially since memories can cheat a little after 30 years. The truth is probably a combination of all the different versions - Coverdale's, Kolodner's, Sykes' and the various producers.

Vandenberg couldn't play any of the versions solos if his life depended on it. No way that was him on any of the recordings.

Two sides to every story. Coverdale was suffering from a sinus infection while attempting to Record what would become the 'whitesnake' album released as 1987 in US. Sykes was impatient and made the error of saying that they should continue recording with new singer if necessary. Naturally , Coverdale took this as a betrayal and had no compunction about showing Sykes the door. A Great shame how things ended up.

Hi - yes, Kalodner was responsible for getting Sykes in the band. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Micky Moody: “A: "I think right after the Saints & Sinners record. David started listening to a lot of American industry people... especially John David Kalodner from Geffen. This guy was ruthless and I’ll tell you why... he last time that I played with Whitesnake was in October 1983. While, I was playing... I think it was in Hamburg.. John Kalodner was standing at the side of the stage and he was taking notes. I thought that 'this is sinister... this is dark'. By the end of the show, he went straight to David and he showed him the notes... it was obvious that John Kalodner did not think much of me. Here’s a story after that incident... we were at a hotel in Germany... on the same tour... and David was sitting with John Sykes. Without any specific reason, he turned to me and he said: 'Don’t you ever turn your back at the audience during the show'. He said that in front of John Sykes and it was evident that Sykes was really embarrassed. I didn’t say anything, but I remember thinking 'Fuck you'! I am sorry to tell you this, but this is the truth. He had embarrassed me in front of another musician, but David had already decided to bring John Sykes in the band. After the last gig in Belgium, I asked the tour manager to go and get all the members of Whitesnake in my room to announce my decision to leave the band. Everybody came in my room except Coverdale... Cozy - being a truly honest guy - said to me: 'Good decision'! Jon Lord started crying.. cause Jon is always very emotional. A week later, David called me and said, 'Oh, you’re leaving the band...'. That’s the story guys!"

Thank you. I figured that might have been the case. The way he says it in this particular interview (the audio documentary - which I LOVE, by the way) it sounded like, "Hey David, meet John Sykes.He's going to write the new album with you." It's like he skipped the, "he should replace Micky Moody and tour Slide It In...and then write the new record with you." I was familiar with the Micky Moody interview so I had to listen a few times to see if I just missed something. Thank you for your reply! (Man I wish this were a video documentary!!!!)
