When To Make A Mock Scrape

When should you start your mock scrape? I believe that starting a mock scrape depends on what you’re using for the licking branch. On our properties the deer primary scrape under white oaks, beech trees or grape vines. If we’re using either the white oak or beech tree branch we like to get those out in late July or early August. You want to have leaves on the branch so putting this type of scrape out now wouldn’t be as beneficial. Those leaves act like a sponge and soak in all of the scent the deer leave behind, one of the reasons why I believe deer use those species as they hold their leaves much longer than others. If you’re using the grape vine as your mock scrape then I would get that started whenever you can! The sooner you can get the local deer to incorporate your new scrape in their routine the better! Scrapes are communication hubs and are used year round so starting one in April is a great idea. The only time I would NOT be putting out a scrape is during the season. The deer will notice it and you’ll have tipped your hand. The risk outweighs the potential benefits.

Things (life) is not that serious! Make a scrape anything you want! Deer won’t be offended! Feeling free to do and enjoy deer hunting is important to me! Just go do it! KZfaq experts don’t be offended either!

Agree with that Ron! Deer hunting is fun and should always be fun. It's good to try to improve but if something ever gets to a point where you aren't having fun anymore, it's time to dial back the intensity. Appreciate the comment!

I will make an in season scrape every once in a while and they work. But if I know where I am going to be hunting, I like to set the scrapes up in the spring to get the deer conditioned to using them.

Just put my scrapes up, used this method, the deer ignore it and walk around it, it’s been 4 days of this activity, any reason why. I’m interested to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Interesting. We notice that some deer will check them out briefly, some deer will spend more time depositing scent and others will walk close enough to smell it but continue walking. As long as you have a few deer physically interacting with the scrape I would say you're ok but if no deer are, there could be an issue. Make sure it is located on or very close to known travel routes. Make sure the licking branch or vine is sticking out like a sore thumb, you want to make sure they see it. Make sure it's at the right height, I put ours about waist high and that seems to work. And finally make sure the ground is roughed up underneath to simulate the scrape. Hope it works and you're able to create a few communication hubs on your property!

Live in central Arkansas, approaching the Ouachita mountains, have land, but it’s Rocky, or clay. What would you plant for fall, what is your scrape plan?
@whitetailevolution

I would try grains and annual clover. Make sure you have a good seed bed prepared and plant before a rain. My scrape plan is normally to put them out in the spring to start conditioning the deer to use them. By the time October rolls around hitting the scrapes is second nature.

Now what is the difference in grape vine and hanging a rope for licking branch?
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution 2 жыл бұрын
Not much. If you have grape vines on your property and want to go with a natural licking branch, use the grape vine. If you don't have any or would rather use a hemp rope, use a hemp rope. The most important thing is the licking branch / scrape is in the correct location, the correct height, is raked out underneath and is sticking out like a sore thumb.
