I would say look at your general area and look at the plants that they're eating .give them something they don't have or something they want.... If you have ever grown tomatoes you would know what I say the number one food plant would be young tomato plants. buy some tomatoes and smash them all over the place wait till August to plant tomatoes

I've heard you say the distances and sizes a bunch of times, but seeing the drone footage showing the downed trees and the spacing is super helpful.

Awesome video thanks for all the information. Been using your information and am starting to see results been seeing more deer and mature bucks during daylight. Do you have any videos on a woods that’s already thick with undergrowth?

I'm thinking about selective logging our 40 acres but afraid it will scare the bucks away thinking of taking 7 trees per acre

That little certainly wouldn't hurt deer movement...heck, several acres of clear cut acres wouldn't either - they would help! But a few trees per acre certainly won't help either...
@MrRABland

To confirm: In 120 acres of mature hardwoods (80% red and white oaks) you would create open approximately 1/4 acre pockets at strategic locations from your food plots for doe, and then farther back, buck bedding.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Rick! Anywhere from 1/4 to 1 acre pockets depending on size and age of timber. If the entire 80 is all hardwoods and the same...then many pockets would be needed.
@MrRABland

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks. Yes, it's all hardwoods (primarily oak, some poplar, soft maple, some white pines) interspersed with several small beaver ponds and small wetlands. No need for a logger (thank goodness!).

Huge fan, thanks for all the video. Will be heading up to cut in the next couple weeks in northern , MI. Do you always leave the fallen timber on the ground or is it ok to leave the tops and branches and take the main logs and use for firewood for camp ?? Or just leave the whole tree. Thinking maybe kill 2 birds..lol. thanks !!!

Just cleared about 50 acres on the south facing side of one of our bluffs. Brought in the big guns with a fella buncher and a couple of dozers. The place was riddle with buckthorn, locust and dead ash trees. I’m very concerned about predation since that area is a high traffic location for doe. I told my contractor about my concerns so he suggested dropping grass seed down (switch blade and native prairie ) with a couple of seeding drones. Just waiting to see if we get hit by another snow storm this Thursday and Friday.

Rock and Roll!! Awesome 13th pod cast!! Made me happy to hear I’m doing just about the same thing!! Making a new trail around the perimeter of our property not an easy task, but sure is fun! I mapped out our current stands and access. Pretty sure we’re only using 14 acres out of 86 to Hunt… that’s insanity! I had an eye-opening experience last weekend.

Hey jeff, Are you hauling out the big trees or leave them where they fall?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Leaving them where they Fall in this situation. If they were marketable we would have a logger take them...at least the logs. But they make for great wildlife cover immediately, by leaving them where they are...

When you drop trees do you drop them in a certain fashion such as in a pile, away from a trail, or drag them out altogether?

Just picked up more of your books. Read and referenced two the covers and back pages came off. I taped them up and my son took them when for his library when my new ones arrived yesterday. Because using them my walls and shelves began to get decorated and so did his with nice bucks. I added the food plot book for this purchase because ours was only 50-60% successful last year just have minor changes do adjust but wanted a good guide! Got it. Ow

Hi Jeff, What do you do with the logs once the trees are down? Leave them for side cover? Or cut some lanes through them? It seems like the deer by my don’t like going into a pile of logs laying next to each other.

I've been spraying simazine yesterday and today I thinned out couple areas of honeysuckle and autumn olive wrapped and strangled with wild grapevines. Good cover but a rabbit couldn't run through it because it was sooo thick. Last year had two does killed by coyotes in an area

I cut out pockets of poplar last spring and got zero in exponential growth, zero regen in those locations. Would it be due to the understory being mostly large ferns, thus no sunlight to the ground?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Hi Greg...you have to get sunlight to the ground for any cutting...full sun. Sunlight is critical for Aspen then too

Jeff, would 2-110 gal. tanks buried next to each other come close to the effectiveness of a larger tank, such as a 300 gal.? Roughly 220 gal. total capacity but nearly half the price of a 300 gal. tank. Thanks!

In your experience, do you feel that a quarter acre clear cut pocket of aspen is adequate from a size perspective for promoting aspen regeneration? As well as being browse tolerant? Thanks!
