Jeff, this is a great refresher video for me and it’s perfect timing. I’m going to spread the buckwheat this Memorial Day weekend in central Wisconsin. I know what you mean about shorting yourself with your own great advice! I got my PackerMAXX on order from Lincoln and he is great too but he has the “good problem” of running out of supplies and needing to back order/ long lead time on the cultipackers. Same thing happening with John Comp and his switchgrass. Your success is helping a lot of people AND businesses and I truly believe that is because you give great advice and it’s easy to see that you’re an honest businessman who has his client’s interests at heart and I think that I can speak for everyone who watches your videos when I say that we all greatly appreciate what you do! Thanks again and congratulations on your business success. I look forward to meeting you sometime.

I watch all your video's religiously lol!! I see a trend of the vast majority being Northern based. I would love to see the difference between North and south strategies as I live in North Carolina. I'm sure both regions will not support the same habitat structures to some degree. I thoroughly love the thought and the detailed planning that goes into every step and detail that goes into Whitetail Habitat growth. In NC we are not known to have tremendously big whitetail bucks other than the rare occasion. Maybe if I have not already missed it a video which overlooks picking your whitetail strategy for your land based on your property. I find that this is a very situational strategy seeing how diverse land can be. There are no other content creators as detailed and as informed as yourself for the southeast or south. Thank you for all you do!!

Hello! This is our first year doing a food plot and we just purchased several bags of the WHS forage blend and winter rye from Northwoods Whitetails. We are currently working to clear our food plot area of brush by manual clearing and glyphosate and are getting a late start so we won’t have time to plant buckwheat this year. When it comes time to broadcast our seed for fall planting would you recommend using straw in place of buckwheat to protect the seeds or just broadcast over the bare dirt? We are doing 0.5 to 1 acre food plot. Thanks for all you do! My wife and I both hunt and are big fans!

Jeff, quick question. I've been doing the buckwheat thing for a number of years.... This year I have a unusual situation though. I've always normally planted my buckwheat somewhere between June 3rd and 5th and have had great results to have everything ready for first week of August annual plots. However this year I will be out of town working and have two choices. Plant my buckwheat this coming Saturday or Sunday.... The 29th or 30th of May. Or wait until the weekend of June 12th. Which I think is probably a little late. What do you think and which dates would you choose. Thanks for your help Jeff I greatly appreciate it.

I am just doing this on 1/4 acre as i have another 1/4 acre clover plot next to it. I checked the plot yesterday and my buckwheat is about 5-6 inches high. I am converting a couple plots from tilled to no till. One is a clay type soil that gets a hard crust on top. Both plots were overseeded in septmber with winter rye. Which is about knee high know. I live in northwestern minnesota. If i spray it now with glyphosate. And over seed them with buckwheat ,will it grow on harder clay soil. The other plot has a better topsoil ,so not worried so much about that one.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Hi Peter! That really depends on how many other food plots you have and overall acreage of plots you have based on a history of factors. I've gone down to as low as a 1/5 of an acre or slightly less, but that was with the full support of larger, nearby holding plots.

Jeff, an idea I have for a video is could you suggest the earthway spreader settings you use for the different crop blends? I picked up on 1.3 for the brassicas you use in another video. Buckwheat, brassicas, rye, etc. I know there are some settings on the sticker on the bottom part of the unit but it doesn’t cover everything we may be using for our plots. I’m new to using one and with your expertise I could save time and money instead of using the “guess and check” method. Thanks a ton for all your content! You are the man! Cody

Jeff you made a quick mention in this video that the two halves of your plots are planted "about 4-5 weeks apart" - could you briefly expand? Does the peas / oats half go on first (date?) or does the brassica half go on first (I'm generally aware of early August timeframe....but base more on a good forecast for rain). Thanks in advance - tyler

What if you can’t get there to 2nd or 3rd plant? Example , here in ark we have prepped and plant first August before a rain with last shot of glyp and plot boost / start etc and then we will do the grain and clover layer around Labor Day and maybe closer to oct if can. Usually get ES Broadside or mix with all of it so if you can’t do it in multiple plantings what would you do??

Hi Jeff, do you notice any effect on germination and growth of the rye when seeded into a rolled buckwheat cover? Buckwheat is one of those plants that releases chemicals in the ground to stop other plants from germinating. It's why it's usually such a clean crop, but I always read that you have to destroy it one month before seeding to allow that chemical to stop having effect. I'd like to try this in organic farming and buckwheat seems to die easily when rolled without glypho, so seed buckwheat after the summer crop and roll it in the autumn while spraying seed into it (wheat). Inversely it also seems possible from you video to seed buckwheat as a cash crop into rolled rye. The difficulty in organic farming is that we have no chemical backup, the cover crops need to be absolutely clean.

Jeff, my rye is very tall, i didn't get it sprayed so now it's almost going to seed.. I'm 2 weeks out on planting my buckwheat. What should I do to kill the rye? Just spray it now w gly. And then seed the buckwheat into it come mid June? Or should I spray and crimp it as well, I'm just afraid that'll cause me to have to thick of thatch that my buckwheat won't make soil contact. I'm in north central w.v. Thanks

It does work best if there is a good rain shortly afterwards. Especially if you have a lot of turkeys or doves who will dine on the seeds that don't get pushed into the soil. However, one year, I broadcast and cultipacked on my sandy SC soil and then got 3" of rain over the next 24 hours and all my seed washed downhill (it was only a slight slope, but enough that the runoff wiped out most of my seeding). Had to replant and the buckwheat in lower portion of the field that ended up with about a 1000 #/acre rate all died because the seeds germinated and choked each other out. Sometimes you just can't win.

Jeff (or anyone else here)..........how long after spraying Gly+2-4Db should one wait before spreading the Buckwheat. I sprayed 5/15 and was hoping to plant this weekend. Did a G-search and didn't come up with anything specific to BW. Thanks y'all.

Most of the time, 2,4-D breaks down in soil so that half of the original amount is gone in 1-14 days. This breakdown time is called the "half-life" of the pesticide. One form of 2,4-D, the butoxyethyl ester, had a much longer half-life in aquatic sediment of 186 days.

Am I able to broadcast buckwheat and spray with glyphosate one more time like I would after rolling it down in the fall. Shouldn't hurt the seed any?

You can spray the gly at the same time when you broadcast the buckwheat - but don't wait until germination, or it will kill it then.

Just planted buckwheat for the first time, and it’s on a new plot. Wish me luck. Oh, and you may be influencing more people than you know. I went into the farmers co-op and asked for buckwheat, the guy said “I don’t know what’s going on this year, but we have sold about 3x the normal amount of buckwheat so far this year. Everyone keeps coming in asking for buckwheat.” I’m in Alabama.

@chrisgeorge2670
@chrisgeorge2670 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulcrave3112 I'm doing 50lbs per acre. That's what Jeff Sturgis recommends. This is my 1st year trying the no till method. We are following his instructions, we bought the packer maxx for the atv. Last year the food plots failed miserably, didn't get any rain when needed and the weed seeds that were tilled up over took both plots. The coop I bought mine at sells buckwheat in 50lbs bags. Make the measuring easy.

I am doing this for the first time this year we plan on a buckwheat/ Winter rye rotation . We have 3 spots sprayed and ready for buckwheat. I only have the earthway 2750 hand spreader. What settings for the buckwheat and Rye? Also what are the requirements for lime and fertilizer in this rotation application, and what settings for the 2750 spreader for this part of the process? I was told that the fertilizer has to be put down right before a rain or tilled in. Is this true?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 жыл бұрын
HI Ron! Definitely fertilize prior to rain, and you will need a soil test to tell you how much lime or fertilizer. The setting for 200#s of rye is fully open. For buckwheat about 2.5 to 3 but that is just guessing.

If I don’t have the funds this year to buy a packer max could I just spread rye and brassica on bare soil when it’s time to plant instead of doing buckwheat this year
@savagehunter3739
@savagehunter3739 3 жыл бұрын
Do you have an ATV you could run over it? Takes a lot of passes, but it works similar to a cultipacker. An alternative to that is to use a chain harrow or drag harrow or drag mat. Depending on size and construction, you can get a Yard Tuff one as cheap as $110 at Tractor Supply. Add some weight on top of it for a little better effect.

I have followed your Rye-Buckwheat-Summer crop method for two years, but I have very sandy soil (located in the Sandhill area of South Carolina) with poor CEC numbers, so my soil tests (done BEFORE each crop planting) tell me each time that I have to add potassium, phosphorous, calcium and magnesium. Although it does not smash down like buckwheat, what about using sunn hemp as my cover crop between the Winter rye and my iron clay cowpeas/lablab crop to help bring up those minerals from deeper in my soil? This is from Hancock Seed Company website: "Sunn hemp is a tropical legume whose claim to fame is that, 60 days from planting, it is typically over six feet tall, adds 120 pounds of Nitrogen to the soil, 10 pounds of residual Phosphorus and 80 pounds of residual Potash transfers from the subsoil to the topsoil, supplies four tons of organic matter, is a great soil builder, as well as increasing drought tolerance and yield and cash value of the next crop. During its first 60 days, sunn hemp mines 38 lbs. of Calcium, 20 lbs. of Sulfur, and 40 lbs. of Magnesium to the surface soil. It also brings up trace nutrients that are necessary for plant growth"

Love the videos man, but I’m a bit confused. So now your going to spread brassicas on top of the crushed buckwheat?? Will you pack them in or just let them try and filter through ?
@joshny4766
@joshny4766 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald. Spread the brassica in the standing buckwheat, not the crushed buckwheat. You want the seed to fall to the ground and then crush the buckwheat over it to provide a mulch layer. I've done this 2 years now. Spread seed into standing buckwheat, run over buckwheat with my 4 wheeler tires, spray glyphosate over the crushed buckwheat and reap the rewards.
