I truly respect the way you don't bash other hunting groups and their tactics like THP. You actually give them props. Now that im 62 I don't run and gun but back in the early 80s to the 90s we didnt leave a stone unturned between West Branch, Grayling, Gaylord, and even Omer before I moved out of Michigan. I remember in 85 or 86 when it took us 6 hours to get from Mount Morris to West Branch because of the deer hunting traffic heading north was so heavy.(The new Zilwaukee Bridge was just being built.) Great memories. . Keep up the good work Jeff.

Your videos have profoundly changed how and when I hunt. 2 biggest changes I have made are; mock scraps/hanging vines and not hunting just because I have time but looking at temp changes, wind changes and hunting fronts. Keep the videos coming! Opening day was a high of 75. I slept in, went to my kids soccer game and shot my bow. 0 guilt. Like you said... it's a marathon not a sprint.

I've been watching countless hours of your videos, putting tons of time scouting and setting cams. I go out opening day to a low tier spot on public land I hadn't scouted much and shot my first buck of my life within an hour of getting to my tree! Feeling incredibly blessed about my luck, but also disheartened all my efforts will not go to use this year. Guess it means my target bucks can grow a little bigger for next season!

Its great how your advice applies to all styles of hunting. Grew up in the north woods hunting from stands. Live in southern missouri now and find still hunting with ur lessons has dramatically improved how close i get to deer and around other hunters. Thank you

Like the cartoons we’ve all seen with the little angel on one shoulder encouraging good, a little devil on the opposite shoulder justifying doing something bad, There’s a little voice in my head that keeps nudging me to “just go try a couple stands”. @@benrent6625 She was indeed a good freezer filler. She had a fawn and a yearling with her, so I know she's left her genetic mark. I'm not the least bit ashamed! I just recognize she's not a trophy, and I'll probably try a vertical bow next year. I put in a lot of work last year, and just didn't get one with the crossbow. So I'm very excited to have my first archery deer, and hope to get many more.

@@Crackhouts Any first deer is a trophy, My first deer was a 4 pointer when i was 12 and i was so happy, Now over the years iv changed my hunting a bit and pass on those smaller ones and try for bigger but thats just how i like to hunt

My dad's "milk weed" was his AYC GRENADIER CIGAR he would get out of the truck fire that big boy up and I would ask where are you going today.... He would take a big drag and puff the smoke straight up, then would say well looks like I'm going this way today gotta keep the wind in your face lol and usually he would be back at the truck by dark waiting for me or his hunting buddy's to help drag his buck out. He was an old school still hunter and knew what he could get away with.

I was blessed this opening weekend in northern Michigan. Tagged out on a six point and a seven point less than 24 hours apart. Second time I have ever shot one on the opener, second time I ever tagged out. The water hole, and food plot really paid off for me.

I've had people try to tell me what I needed to do. Your area is different than mine but I believe many of the tips you give are honest! I still don't like the advertisement of products on any advice. I'll just learn as much as I can and move on!

Great tips, I didn't hear one thing I believe is important, when tracking in thivk cover or swampy areas, you have to look at the bottom sides of ferns, swampgrass and brush as the deer will likely be lower than you think.

Fishes. Nice catch Jeff no pun intended. Great plots are built in the fall, not the summer. I sold out on it and I'm putting the last of my winter rye on today. Haven't hunted it one time. First muzzleloader season is in 2 weeks. I'm counting on the shift. Build it and they will come. Manage it and they will stay.

Fishes is correct if you're speaking of more than one species of fish. The same is true of deer. Deer if speaking only of white-tailed deer, deers if talking about white-tailed and muleys.

Been pretty warm here in my neck of the woods. Patience ladies and gents. Spend some of this time getting your muscle memory in shape, and getting sighted in really good. Haven't been out once yet. Still waiting for that big weather shift, and it's coming here this weekend (FINALLY!) It will pay off!!

@@KillerKolt44 yeah believe me I wanted to get out opening day SO bad! I think everybody does ya know. All the years excitement building up to opening day. I actually kicked myself in the butt because I didn't go out until all my buddies came back and told me not one of them seen any deer! And they were all buckets of sweat from climbing and hiking with stands in 80° weather. I really started to follow this man's advice a couple years ago, and let me tell ya, it's paid off! I'm 52 and I've been hunting for many years. Thought I knew a lot. Turns out I really, really don't. I'm not no dummy, but actually "listening" and then "doing" some things he's talked about has had tremendous results for me. This guy is very smart when it comes to deer, deer habitat, and deer movement. I won't say I never will go out deer hunting when it's warm ever again. I just may. But the fact is if you listen to this man and go out at the "key" times, and in those "key" weather event situations, you will not only see more deer, but you'll have more shooting opportunities on those deer. I have strictly hunted the "WEATHER" for the past two years because of this guy with very successful results. This will be my third year doing it. I haven't been out one time yet this year. Waiting until the big drop in temperature coming this weekend. And if it shifts again and stays warm I'll be waiting some more. I promise you KillerKolt44 it will pay off for if ya give it a try! Wait until after big weather events. Rain, snow, wind, hail etc... Wait until big drops in temps occur. This guy is the best around in my opinion, and what makes him the best is that he openly shares "key" elements that add to being an all around great hunter. He doesn't want our money. And he actually helps hunters to save a lot of our hard earned money by sharing what doesn't work, or what's not going to make any difference in being successful, and by telling us all not to buy up all the gimmick crap that you don't need to be successful. Like he said, if there's a mature buck downwind of you, he's 99.9% of the time going to smell you...PERIOD! No matter how much of a product you buy and put on yourself. I love this guy because he's made me a better hunter. But more because he cared enough to openly and freely do that! Good luck this year my friend...wait until that temp drops significantly!!

I grew up in a hunting family. Six uncles and my father. Started out around nine, ended in my late twenties. (Uncles started passing away) sucks. I'm fifty three now and have been back in the woods hunting for three years now. I have three state parks I hunt white tail deer. private property if I get lucky. Hard to find an area, space is limited.

Planting for fall and early winter, but adjacent farmers have great green alfalfa filed all around still in Northern, MI. bucks are visible and bed on me all summer fall, early winter. prime food and bedding all summer and fall they really like

I just turned 64 today, so no spring chicken. I've taken a couple of really nice bucks over the years but still learning. I just found your site and I'm amazed at the things you are teaching me. My question......what do you think of the Elimatrax system? I have one I bought several years ago and haven't used it religously but was planning on trying it again this year. Our bow season is open but I haven't been yet. Going out back now to hang a vine for a mock scrape! Thank you for that video, by the way! I plan to watch all your videos time will allow. Jeff, I hunt public land in the u.p. of michigan. I drive in deep with my wheeler and then walk and walk. Mainly following small remote creeks. The sign is always minimum. Very hard to hunt

I'd like to stress safety once again. My 24' fall from October 2014 cost me a helicopter life flight, 10 days in the hospital, several days in critical condition and a month in rehab learning to walk again, with a shattered upper right humorous, fractured L4 and L5, bruised heart and 5 fractures in my pelvis. Following that was months of pain and 4 surgeries on my shoulder ending in a total reverse shoulder replacement. I still have back pain and numbness in my right leg from crotch to toes from nerve damage. Use a safety line to keep you connected to the tree at all times. Most people die from falls over 10 feet.

@@peadookie I was hunting with a lock on type stand and stick ladder. On the morning of the fall I had climbed up and into the stand in darkness and did not notice that my top strap on my stick ladder had been chewed most of the way through. Later in the morning after I unhooked my harness from my short safety line I transitioned from the lock on to the top of the ladder. At this point I glanced down and saw the chewed strap and at that moment it broke. The upper two sections of ladder pulled away then bent over during my fall. I never lost consciousness and managed to radio my son who was hunting a few hundred yards from me. I also called 911 to get someone to come help me as I could not move and realized I was badly hurt.

The rescue squad showed up in about 15 minutes then they stabilized me where I fell while waiting on the life flight helicopter to land a couple of hundred yards from my location. The four surgeries on my shoulder were attempts to keep my normal bones healing but the upper humorous ended up failing causing massive bone spurs and more damage over the next 11 months. The sad thing is that people that know me and know my entire story still refuse to use a safety line. It's unbelievable to me when they've seen what I've been through.

@@peadookie The investigating game warden said the top strapped probably was caused by a squirrel. I had used the stand the week before and it was in great shape. Dang tree rats! 😁

Is there anything besides pressure that would make the deer nocturnal this time of year? I have property that hasn’t been hunted in 5 years and most of my trail cam photos of deer are at night. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Love the videos, such great information.

I'm heading out Oct 13 - 26th here in Washington State for Mule Deer. I will add your strategies to my already rigorous quiet, scent, weather, wind control techniques. I'm a little confused on thermals still, (I understand them) but need to get better. And also hunting morning versus evening. How do I know when to bag morning hunts? And how do I get in my areas without killing it with scent. It's all so much....I'm modern fire by the way. So have a lot more room for scent/wind control....Thanks!

So I have a question whsts your thoughts So I hunt Wisconsin.. since opener I had 3 good bucks going by my stand but couldn't get it done ... as of October 1st ... I haven't had a buck walk by the camera for 6 days let alone a doe. ..could this be a transition switch or the lull... I hunt metro so could the bucks of left to beans some where and come bsvk? Its a new property this year to me ... normally I don't get bucks till 15th of October on my other properties besides this one now ...

I am in NW Ohio. I have my Callender marked on Oct. 21 for pre rut from years past. In your opinion, when would actual rut start? About 1 week later? 2 weeks? Sounds like you and I are about the same time zone.

Question if you respond, So Where i hunt its on an edge of the field then woods to the east and south of it, and a little a north. I have trail cameras in that field and woods. When im just checking the trail cameras is driving a truck through that field then walking to the rest a bad idea? Would you rather leave scent from the truck which has no human scent on the outside or walk the whole way when not hunting and possibly leaving a little human scent? I normally walk but sometimes ill quick drive the truck back at a reasonable time and grab the cards and leave. Where the truck is driven to the woods is the same lane where i also have to walk in and deer also walk down.. Its a something ill always thought about. Now when im sitting, Obviously im not going to drive the truck right up to my hunting spot

What's your take on the noise from the zipper of a blind? The access to my FAILED food plot is solid as far as oder control however I always question the noise from the blind zipper.

I have a suggestion for you. If you want to gain more insight into scent, how terrain and wind affect the dispersing of scent molecules and more, I would encourage you to sit down with an experienced k9 instructor who teaches tracking, explosive and/or narcotics detection. This is a very complex subject that a successful k9 trainer would have to master to understand how to train k9 teams to function in the real world.

What time do you like to walk in during a morning hunt? I know some guys that get there three hours before daylight but I prefer about an hour before daylight.

So I got a question I have 5 or 6 does year round on my camera(at every time early morning afternoon an lat evening) an the near the rut I will have 6 buck on the same cameras but they are there at night I make the mock scrapes I made the food plot I have followed this channel the best I can why are my bucks only showing up at night in late October throw November. Been there 2 years an the same Pattern any subjections

I have only hunted during the afternoon so far , I have seen a lot more deer on food sources during afternoon on camera also , I have always heard smoke is a good cover scent , I have been with people that the wind was blowing right towards the deer and never had the deer blow or anything when they have a cigarette in the mouth , but it may have just been luck each time I’m not sure lol

Great reminder video Jeff . I have a question about my vine mock scrape s ; I put them out back in June at the water holes like you recommend . I have deer using the water holes but the will walk past the vine an not touch them . exception for one vine I have a fawn play with it daily for hours . but no other deer will touch them.So what do I need to do to get them to use the vines.ihave over fourty deer using the water holes in four locations but they don't touch the vines.these mock scrape are the only thing that I have done that they won't use improvements per your teaching any suggestions???

In regards to the shift, what primarily triggers it from summer to fall? Is it temperatures? I ask because I wonder if this oppressive heatwave we have in MI right now would delay that shift a couple weeks.

I have a question about your HuntWise app. When I want to see the weather for a give day and I click on that day, it always shows me the following day. Click on Thursday and it shows me Friday. I don’t get it. Is that on purpose or a glitch in the app?

Once the rut is over do deer return closer to their spring/summer habitats or will they stay in the rut fall areas.

I know its not relevant to the material posted but i just wanted to ask, have you been deer hunting in south Florida. I love the differences in strategy implemented for a successful hunt in south Florida than how i would hunt in Michigan. Was curious if you have a video on different strategies for different environment ect... Great material as always keep up awesome work.

I guess my biggest question is do mature bucks prefer wooded areas over like , the fields and open areas during October when they do come out , and if they do come out do they prefer finding food and water in heavily wooded areas. I always see does out in the fields and stuff but until the rut I personally don't see any bucks out in the fields or anything near the ponds and apple trees and stuff like that . I appreciate anyone's experience with this as well let me know ! I'm in a area got 190 acres with 2 ponds for major water source some heavy woods with a few big open fields and 2 smaller fields in the woods . I got a spike last year in the smallest open feild during mid November

How do I access my stands when corn is still standing without scaring deer when entering and exiting everytime? Edges of corn are only ways to my stands.

Im hunting a apple orchard and i put a stand 50 yards into the woods just 100 yards away from the apple trees but im thinking they are staying in those woods which is maybe a 3 acre island. I have had a doe jump up way before sunset. Im thinking i should just sit out of the woods looking at the apple trees. Any opinions guys?

I don’t know if you’ll reply to me but do you have any tips for vehicle scent ? Like getting in your car or truck driver seat and not smelling like your every day scent ? Should I just spray my seat down and then get dressed when I get to my location outside of my truck ? I’ve always wondered what to do about that situation if you see this and can let me know that would be great ! Love your videos it has helped a lot !

Public Land related question: How do you pattern deer that are transitioning from a 150yd wide X 700yd long slew bedding area through 100acres of predominantly oak timber to fields/plots? The deer don’t seem to be going to those fields every night right now, and they seem to be moving randomly throughout the timbered area. The timbered area has very little elevation change but does have diverse understory. I’m scared to dive into bedding or very close to bedding to identify corridors but I’m not seeing any definitive sign to base a strategy on.

Have you seen a summer/fall range switch year to year? Last summer early October all I had on camera were 3.5/4.5 year old deer. Managed to get a dandy 4.5 opening day of archery last year. October 15th they were gone and little bucks moved in. This year I have a ton of does and 2.5 and younger bucks all over. I guess my curiosity is can the corn field that was beans last year be to blame for a switch otherwise could the summer range have completely changed year to year? It’s possible all the 3.5’s and 4.5’s were shot last year but being Michigan my assumption is if they ACTUALLY made it to 3.5 as regular as they were around last year, the 2.5’s would have at least been protected by the neighboring properties and 3.5’s this year. I hope I didn’t miss you mentioning this in your video!

5 years ago I fell to certain death and survived taking down my stand at the end of the season be careful guys shattered hip shattered pelvis broke right shoulder 10 broken ribs bruised alongs severe hypothermia and a bruised femur I was all alone you do not want to be in that situation always strap in
