Love the video! Next time leave the dead grass you cut. It will act as a compost helping your seeds germinate better buy retaining soil moisture. And also it will help build your soil over time if you're doing no-till. Keep up the good work! And keep the videos coming!

Thanks for the video! I'm not super wealthy and just have a small 6 acre property that's attached to a 100 acre woods (that aren't mine) and some farmer's fields. The front two acres are empty and haven't been planted for 2 yrs. Back four are wooded with a creek running through it. Is it possible to plant a food crop of clover in August? Would clover be best in this situation do ya think? Also, not being a farmer, do I have this straight? 1. Kill weeds 2. Mow/whack to bare soil 3. Rake it up 4. Spread seed. Did I miss anything?

@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

Well depends How the land is laid out I would say. If the stream acts like a funnel Then I would put it about 50-100 yards away. Deer like traveling streams and crossing steams as well. Hunting a crossing in the stream going to the plot would Be awesome.

I will be doing a food plot this weekend and fencing it in since I have cattle on my property. No more than 1/4 of an acre. Rocky soil and doing it in a pasture. Would you recommend winter rye or what would you use?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t recommend winter rye if someone paid me a million dollars lol. That being said it does have the ability to stay green into the later winter months. But it has the least nutritional value of anything you can plant. I wouldn’t plant it alone. Mix in some other stuff such as oats, Clovers, some brassicas and winter wheat.

Added lime during the winter months let it sit them came back in around end of may and planted. You can’t go by “when” to plant such as a date because everywhere is different. Go by temps. All depends on weather and if the temps are right. Typically for me in the north east it’s mid may to end of may.

@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
It can act as that for sure. Reason I did it here was for better soil to seed contact. If I just killed the vegetation which I did with round up I wouldn’t of had as good of germination. Now that the clover is in there working it’s magic it will only get better and if I need to frost seed in spring I will

Any suggestions on what to plant in 1/8th acre kill plot that I have in the middle of a oak stand? I think a planted clover too late last year as it was late may and it came up and died out when it got hot. I’m in Virginia
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Most likely wasn’t due to heat. Usually when you plant in the woods like that and it dies off it’s from lack of sun or low ph. Did you do a soil sample? Lack of sun planes develop heavy tops and a weak root system. It will grow then flop over and die. Same issues with low PH. Virginia is not that far south for clover to die off in the summer should be fine. We grow clover in the Deep South and does great.
@BudDingus
@BudDingus 4 жыл бұрын
Whitetail obsession outdoors The ph was pretty bad when I initially checked. 5.2-5.4 range if I remember. I’ve been adding lime every few months for the past year. The rye grass I planted in September came up good and is still in the plot right now. It gets ample sunlight as I picked a spot where there was a canopy opening and I cut all the small trees and brush out. My theory was that the white oaks destroyed the plot by taking all the moisture during our very dry summer this past year.

I planted a small plot, small enough a lot wouldn't have done it but the land I hunt isn't very big at all. It's in the woods, the canopy is thin enough that most parts get light for an hour or so a day. Planted clover, but it's just growing tall and thin and not standing up very well. Is that a sign of not enough light? I can take out some smaller trees but don't have a chainsaw so I can't get the problem ones down if that's the case
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

Most likely yes. From my experience lack of sun will cause brown spots on the leaves and also the plant will have a weak root system and heavy tops which will cause the plants to fall over which is what your having.

You need more food plots, bigger food plots, or reduce local herd size.

Dump a bag of water softener tablets on the ground in the center, or wherever you want a continuous specific spot hit. The deer will eat the dirt and make a large hole. Then you toss a mineral rock in there. Works great in addition to a foot plot
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I did that for years. Unfortunately it’s never been proven to benefit the deer. It will attract for sure because it’s like candy but doesn’t improve the health of the animals and that’s what I care about most.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors you're absolutely right. I personally use a soy bean and rapeseed/clover mix on my plot. And on Earth day, trees are extremely cheap. I did pine trees on the one side of my plot for a cover/bedding area. I also rented a skid steer and did a small 50' round 3' deep pond. I've got very little into my spot and it has been phenomenal the last few years. Keep up the good work!

how do you figure out what setting to put your spreader on per seed
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. So most times on new hand spreaders Like the one I’m using here it tells you on the spreader. So for instance for clover you can set it around a 2 to a 2.5 always best to start with a small opening. So if you have 5 lbs of clover per acre start with a small Opening. If you have extra left then good go over it again. Same with big seed. Start small and go from there.

Thanks for the quick response, i tried planting my first food plot last night and made a few mistakes. i have the same spreader as you and was not sure when i had seed that was mixed and different sizes what to start with. i guess it is probably would of been a good idea to start small and if there is leftover to increase it. Again thanks for the input im still learning and I hope my plot turns out. Greetings from Minnesota! keep up the great videos!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

Thanks man. That’s what it’s all about. Learning as you go. Just a tip. When you buy buck on the bag seed typically it’s a variety of seed all different sizes. You have to open the spreader to the largest seed in the bag correct? So all the other small seed is just pouring out and you are wasting a lot of seed. That’s how them companies get you. You get more bang for your buck when you buy your seeds separate. That way you can spread each seed separate and you will be able to cover more of a area. Make sense?
