IMHO....if you're serious and looking out for pals, it basically comes down to the Green Jacket or the Maximus Centurion by Kokatat. Thoughts?

Do you think you need a rescue vest to be looking out for your pals?

@@GearGarageTV True that. You're screwed for live bait without them......Of course the last time I did a live bait rescue was........never. I mean, we practice it, but it's never come up. Thoughts?

Great reviews and food for thought. I mostly kayak for hunting purposes. River isn't terrible but you dont want to be floating downstream for long due to an over abundance of sweepers and overhanging trees that have fallen. Its park area so no one is allowed to groom it. Anywho... my main consideration for a vest has been how quickly i can exit it for a powerstroke to shore while remaining legal and also safe in the event of a knock-out. I wear a helmet though as im solo and those overhanging trees can really sneak up on you. Lol

This is the best thing on youtube. Great work. I would be really interested to know how much flotation pfds lose over the years. Obviously there are a lot of variables, but it would be cool to see a few examples. I did some informal on-river testing with a bucket and rocks, but it would be rewarding to do some proper citizen science in a swimming pool with some dumbbells. Bouyancy and flotation it based on density, and the weight of things in the water. The rating in pounds that a jacket is given is how much force downward it takes to submerge and balance a vest. This number has nothing to do with it's weight alone, but it's overall density, meaning that these buckles have a very low impact on the flotation. Another note, if you were to stand on a scale underwater, and then compare that to the flotation rating of a vest, you would see that it is also very low, but always lower than your own. All in all, the vest is much less dense than you and provides more boyant force up than the weight force that you provide down. Therefore, you float.

Live bait is not only useful for rescuing people on "some class five rivers". Sometimes live bait or simply tethering to the bank can be super useful to assist in raft or kayak rescue after a pin or wrap... just some food for thought.

Great thank you for your thoughts. Have you used live bait to recover a raft or kayak before?

@@GearGarageTV I am a fresh grade 3 guide so I have not personally done it but I have witnessed it in person. A person was lowered from an area of shallow water down towards the wrapped raft. It is a very situational technique but it is possible.
@GearGarageTV

@@jacksonburgess1461 I don't think it's common practice for retrieving equipment. Live bait techniques do present some risk to the rescuer. I understand using them to rescue a person but I would personally never use them to retrieve equipment.

Northwest Rafting Company better to be safe then sorry tho dude. It could be someone’s life that could be at risk because you didn’t have the proper safety equipment. Have an extra safety harness that doesn’t really get in the way of your activity or have someone possibly drown on your trip. 🤷‍♂️

I hear a lot of ladies struggling with pdfs. Seems difficult to size and maintain comfort and effectiveness. Maybe helpful going over some reviews and seeing options available to accommodate for the difference in male and female bodies.

Great video. Its interesting different views on knives being on show, that are easier to grab, but could get caught, to keeping a knife in a pocket. Do you ever attach a throw line to your pfd? Or how do you keep a throw line close to you? Thanks Richard

Sometimes I wear a throw bag around my waist and at other times have one attached to the boat but easy to access.

Personally I feel that you should always have a safety harness when your doing any type of care over someone. You said about rafting and not needing it but what happens when your customer gets caught in a tree and you need a harness or rope work to help. If possible it’s best to have a harness of your PFD. The only time I would say it’s okay not to have it is when you are on the river and only have to safe yourself for example free style kayaking where a low profile PFD wouldn’t need one. Other than that good video.

Thanks for your comment. How often have you seen it used by a rafter? I've never actually seen one used correctly in the real world in any situation other than kayaking. I've seen a few people stuck in trees and using a safety harness for extraction has never been something that would have helped.

Northwest Rafting Company yeah I understand where you coming from. But I’m the very rare occasion that something we’re to happen with your customer it could be a good idea. I know people who have rafted all over the world and one of them has unfortunately lost a customer on his raft. He didn’t have a safety harness. Not to say that in the situation it could’ve helped but if it could then the incident may not have happened.
